Awesome video and wish my dad did it the way you do. He takes all the calfs and old cows to the sale barn then buys his replacement heifers at the sale. He then brings them home and they spend a week in the corral to make sure their not sick.

Very true! I’m not sure I’d recommend goats unless you have a reliable market for them or you want the meat/milk for yourself. Goats require a VERY good fence, they just love to break out! Chickens are good because the initial investment is low and it’s easy to sell eggs or meat. But not very profitable per bird. Pigs are good, relatively low investment, predictable feed out, and you can make good money per head. Good luck! Any other questions I’m glad to try to help!
Thank you very much! They are mostly Black Angus with some red angus and old Hereford genetics in there somewhere. Used a Hereford bull and a black bull this year so calves ought to look a bit more colorful now. Thanks for watching

Can you get limerock or other road base material in your area, maybe dig out that muck and get some good rock in their so its easier on you and the cattle while working! Just a thought, mud sucks! After seeing your working area, that might be a lot of loads of materials! Lol
Yeah that would be a lot of rock and it would have to be replenished often. I just need to time things out better where I’m not doing that in the mud! Thanks Brad!

Thanks for the question New Farmer. To give you a good answer we need to know a few more bits of information. Why is she open? Is she nursing a calf? Has she ever been bred? At 3 years she should have already had 2 calves so if she hasn’t I would want to know why. My gut says someone wouldn’t get rid of a cow in the prime of her life unless there is something wrong with her. But get the answers to those questions and let’s go from there!
Looking to get cows through the spring-fall then sell in the winter because I dont have the equipment to feed. How would you go about doing this and trying to turn a profit? Never had cows learning a lot from your channel thanks

Some stalk people that are real like you or me that do farm to table and will post crap that is really horrible. I think your videos are really fun to watch and I like the way you show the one-,man-band part, as that is like my place. I am fairly new and I am introducing new cows into our isolated heifer stock. Do you test all cows or quarantine them when you bring them into to a new herd? Also, do you worry or is there any worry about BVD and PI cows in this local industry. We deliver to Petaluma.

I see this video is from January, but I do have a question about #31, the injured cow that you sold for butcher. Wouldn't it have been more economical to butcher her and put in freezer than to sell for next to nothing, and sell one of the 4 steers that you kept back for butchering? I know #31 probably isn't as big as what you typically butcher (considering you are keeping the 4 steers out until next year) but the processing fee wouldn't be as much either and I would think you would get more for your time/money (inputs) that route? Just curious- thank you in advance
The problem with butchering an old cow like that is all you get from her is hamburger. At that age any steaks or anything like that would be very tough so when they are harvested, everything is ground. Thanks for the question!
When I get a heifer calf from a mom I like I put the ear tag in the left ear. All steers get same color ear tags in the right ear. When I get a heifer from a democrat mom (won’t take care of calf, ornery, fence jumper...) I put a different color tag in the right ear to make sure it leaves ranch after weaning. Simplifies sorting later
Tyler in that muck need waders not boots and the cow she needed to go like you said she would better as a beef than a cow. I liked those white face you choose and that new shirt looked better on you.

I switch out bulls every two to three years to avoid that close of an inbreed (father x daughter). If you breed heifers to a different bull you can keep your main herd bull three years with no inbreeds, if you have one bull cover all of your cattle regardless of age change him out every two years. If you want to keep the same bull longer than that you could always sell your entire calf crop and buy your replacements, but I prefer to change out bulls.
Xu Ay you can in-line breed. There’s some benefits to it. A lot of your registered guys do it that way but you have to have a strong understanding of genetics.
Great question! These calves will most likely be purchased by a seasonal grazing (or “stocker”) operation which will graze them for a few months until they are around 900 lbs. at that point they would most likely go to a feedlot to be fed out to their finished weight. I don’t know exactly where the retail product will end up, but these are high quality calves so likely they would end up at a high end grocery store or restaurant that markets black angus beef. Definitely not in an Arby’s sandwich! Thanks for the question!
Farmer Tyler Ranch I have such a high interest in agriculture it’s one of the only things that I’ve cared for im 22 and I think I’m going to major in agribusiness I’ll work on a farm or ranch it’s just so hard it seems to get my foot in the door I’ll look on the internet within 50 miles and there will be like one ranch (usually ranch in Texas) or farm hiring at a time
An Ag Business degree is great in that it covers a broad spectrum and will make you an attractive candidate to a wide variety of employers. But if you really want to learn about how to farm or run a ranch, try to go to work on one! I did both (got an animal science degree and worked on a hay/rice/row crop farm) and learned way more practical knowledge on the farm. If you’re near or in Texas you might consider working at a feedlot. Great way to learn cattle
Farmer Tyler Ranch Yea that’s my idea is to work on one for a long while then either just be a farm or ranch hand or eventually get a tractor and sell crops to a food hub or something I’m not interested in getting a degree to be a millionaire or expect atleast $20 an hour I wanna make an honest living do a hard days work I’m going to college for the knowledge and just to get my foot in the door since I never grew up this way of life I know it’ll be harder to get job like this
Well it sounds like you’ve got a great attitude and you know what you want. So right there you’re ahead of most people your age. Listen to old timers, they may not be on the cutting edge of how they do things, but there is no substitute for their lifetime of knowledge. Learn how to turn a wrench, weld, fix things, etc. because you’ll need those skills. Fortunately with TH-cam there’s NOTHING you can’t learn! Remember it just takes time and experience you won’t get there overnight but you will get there. I guess that’s my best advice. Good luck man any other questions just ask!
How long is your stock trailer? I bought some 1-year old heifers and am trying to get an idea of how big of a trailer I’ll need to hire to get them home.

I've actually been researching the stockyards and what not. My father is a cattle buyer in New York state, as was his father and his father. My father's great uncles owned one of the biggest calf slaughterhouses in the country from the 1950s to the mid-80s in upstate NY. I wasn't alive at the time, but I grew up around it after.
First off welcome to the channel. In this video I kept six replacement heifers that will be used for breeding this year. The rest that were sold were the same age so still viable breeders but I only wanted to keep those six because to my eye they were the best out of the bunch. Those that were sold could very possibly go into someone else’s breeding herd. Good question thank you!

Some stalk people that are real like you or me that do farm to table and will post crap that is really horrible. I think your videos are really fun to watch and I like the way you show the one-,man-band part, as that is like my place. I am fairly new and I am introducing new cows into our isolated heifer stock. Do you test all cows or quarantine them when you bring them into to a new herd? Also, do you worry or is there any worry about BVD and PI cows in this local industry. We deliver to Petaluma.

I see this video is from January, but I do have a question about #31, the injured cow that you sold for butcher. Wouldn't it have been more economical to butcher her and put in freezer than to sell for next to nothing, and sell one of the 4 steers that you kept back for butchering? I know #31 probably isn't as big as what you typically butcher (considering you are keeping the 4 steers out until next year) but the processing fee wouldn't be as much either and I would think you would get more for your time/money (inputs) that route? Just curious- thank you in advance
The problem with butchering an old cow like that is all you get from her is hamburger. At that age any steaks or anything like that would be very tough so when they are harvested, everything is ground. Thanks for the question!

When I get a heifer calf from a mom I like I put the ear tag in the left ear. All steers get same color ear tags in the right ear. When I get a heifer from a democrat mom (won’t take care of calf, ornery, fence jumper...) I put a different color tag in the right ear to make sure it leaves ranch after weaning. Simplifies sorting later

so if I choose a replacement heifer from my own breeding cattle should I get a new bull to avoid inbreeding or just use the same bull?
I switch out bulls every two to three years to avoid that close of an inbreed (father x daughter). If you breed heifers to a different bull you can keep your main herd bull three years with no inbreeds, if you have one bull cover all of your cattle regardless of age change him out every two years. If you want to keep the same bull longer than that you could always sell your entire calf crop and buy your replacements, but I prefer to change out bulls.

Xu Ay you can in-line breed. There’s some benefits to it. A lot of your registered guys do it that way but you have to have a strong understanding of genetics.
Do you ever know where the “market” takes your cows? Like do they show up in your grocery store or do they show up in a sanwhich at arbys?
Great question! These calves will most likely be purchased by a seasonal grazing (or “stocker”) operation which will graze them for a few months until they are around 900 lbs. at that point they would most likely go to a feedlot to be fed out to their finished weight. I don’t know exactly where the retail product will end up, but these are high quality calves so likely they would end up at a high end grocery store or restaurant that markets black angus beef. Definitely not in an Arby’s sandwich! Thanks for the question!

I’ll look on the internet within 50 miles and there will be like one ranch (usually ranch in Texas) or farm hiring at a time
An Ag Business degree is great in that it covers a broad spectrum and will make you an attractive candidate to a wide variety of employers. But if you really want to learn about how to farm or run a ranch, try to go to work on one! I did both (got an animal science degree and worked on a hay/rice/row crop farm) and learned way more practical knowledge on the farm. If you’re near or in Texas you might consider working at a feedlot. Great way to learn cattle

Well it sounds like you’ve got a great attitude and you know what you want. So right there you’re ahead of most people your age. Listen to old timers, they may not be on the cutting edge of how they do things, but there is no substitute for their lifetime of knowledge. Learn how to turn a wrench, weld, fix things, etc. because you’ll need those skills. Fortunately with TH-cam there’s NOTHING you can’t learn! Remember it just takes time and experience you won’t get there overnight but you will get there. I guess that’s my best advice. Good luck man any other questions just ask!

I've actually been researching the stockyards and what not. My father is a cattle buyer in New York state, as was his father and his father. My father's great uncles owned one of the biggest calf slaughterhouses in the country from the 1950s to the mid-80s in upstate NY. I wasn't alive at the time, but I grew up around it after.

First off welcome to the channel. In this video I kept six replacement heifers that will be used for breeding this year. The rest that were sold were the same age so still viable breeders but I only wanted to keep those six because to my eye they were the best out of the bunch. Those that were sold could very possibly go into someone else’s breeding herd. Good question thank you!

How much do you get for an yearling calf?
Well you get paid on weight so a yearling is probably 850 lbs or so, might get a $1.20 per pound in today’s market for a steer that size.
