I had no idea how much I would learn from this video with such a fanciful title! Great stuff!

I love the idea of thinking about the lifting motions of the fingers rather than the pressing down! This will really help me to release tension that I hold in my fingers, hands and wrists. I also needed the reminder that tension anywhere in my body while I play translates directly into how I breathe and how I sound.

Uneven finger coordination is the culprit for bad finger technique, just like Debost says, it’s a simple concept, it just takes some extra thought to solve!

This video was a really good refresher! I will be sure to pay extra attention to those devil fingers as I play anything that could potentially be uneven. Thank you! :)

Thinking of the fingers as lifting rather than pressing down can truly make a world of a difference! I love the comparison you made with vocalists because it places the emphasis back on our air rather than our fingers.

Yes, lifting fingers can be a nice release of tension while pushing down will generate tension. Why do we focus on that thing which generates tension.....?

So important to keep the "little devils" in my, especially after taking long breaks from practice. Important too for young students know that it's not about going fast!

Haha yes, important for EVERYONE to remind themselves it's not about going fast! 😊

I love what you said about hand position. And how you showed it so clearly. As I've gotten older I'm getting a lot more pain playing my flute. Especially in my neck and upper back. So these have helped me alot

I'm so glad - that's exactly the kind of thing I was hoping to help with, making this video! Best wishes with your flute! 👍

I think my left hand ring finger is my 4th (or 5th or 6th) little devil. It has such a hard time with trills!

I have been looking for videos on this topic and am very happy to have fallen on this one!! I personnally have a fourth little devil...it's the fourth finger on the right hand. In fact, i feel like my whole right hand is the devil!!! I'll definitely give this a try as into lifting fingers. Also, any cues on really finding exactly where you're right thumb should fall? Thanks April! You're videos are amazing!

Yes finger relaxation is a struggle for me! I often find it difficult to relax my hands as I play and it puts a lot of tension in my hands. I agree with the finger devils!! They have caused me a lot of trouble! I might have a 4th little devil with my thumb- but I’m going to work on more scales and tone studies with relaxed hands!

I wish I didn't have fingers! I love all of the piano exercises (including the one of just lifting my fingers and letting them fall naturally). As my choir director in high school would always say, "tension in the body means tension in the voice." If I really want my sound to be as effortless as possible--just like singing--then I need to learn to relax my fingers and continue refining my thumb placement.

Well.... when it comes right down to it, you probably DO want fingers.... 😉

Very interesting way of thinking about fingering technique which I hadn't previously considered. I remember a while ago I actually asked for the key resistance on my flute to be increased a bit so I would have to push and not lift; I guess I ought to get that undone? Not sure. Also-How fast is the Prokofiev Symphony in real life? I am very concerned about that A-G-E-C loop.

Is it ok if I make a request even though I’m a former student? Can you discuss common posture problems/exercises to alleviate physical tension in the arms/shoulders please?
