You look at Geelong then and they were a team of champions ...the Saints had a few champions but were more a champion team...remarkable that they got as close as they did through that period...it’s a credit to them...I’ll always respect the Sainters and their fans
What a wonderful short documentary, especially the after match footage. It really caught the emotion. As a Geelong fan I feel for the Saints. They deserved a flag in this era and to be honest I felt they were a touch better than us in this game. Footy can be cruel. I remember watching us against the Hawks the previous year (supremely confident haha) and one commentator stating it was only a matter of time before the floodgates opened such was Geelongs inside 50 dominance. And then bang, bang, the game changed very quickly!
the one we should have definitely won. The 2010 GF, well that was just bad luck, and then extra bad luck for not having extra time. '09 We had our chances. That was the one we should have grabbed.
@White_Shadow_59 • 🐯 🐯 Another St Kilda supporter who blames everything else. The ball's fault for bouncing away from Milne. You even blame the clock for not giving you more time ! The game goes for 2 hours ! Couldn't get more goals in 2 hours ? ( 29 • 1 • 2021 )
Lost by 2 points and 5 points. A combined total of 7 points in losses for the home and away season. 20 wins and 2 losses and were such a dominant team that year, but just could not get over the line when it counted. To only lose by 13 points total over 3 losses all year. This will always be the season that got away for St Kilda.
I don't want to take any credit from either club. But it's a myth that Barrasi introduced handball. John Kennedy had tried it earlier. There's plenty of documentation to back this up, including player testimonials. It's just that the dramas of the 1970 GF held sway.
Probably the better team on the day overall, but 0 goals to 3 in the last quarter makes it hard to win. Very unfortunate, but having said that, it would have been a tragedy if this truly great Geelong team lost another GF also, particularly after the disaster of '08. Geelong lost 5 GFs in the prior 2 decades, and would have been a laughing stock if they had lost again. It would have meant that they only had 1 win from their last 8 GFs, going back to 1967. Geelong was able to bounce back very well after '08 and win '09 (even though overall they were far less dominant) and continued to be a very strong side almost every year thereafter. Whereas, although St Kilda nearly won in '10 in another absolute heartbreaker to the Pies, they then largely fell off the face of the earth. Lyon's game plan was so taxing that their best could only really be sustained for one season. They went absolutely all in to win in those years and didn't make good list management decisions for the future at all. Geelong always keeps one eye to the future, Saints seemingly did not. Having said that, if they had gotten over the line in this match, we'd be talking about this Saints team as one of the absolute greatest of all time. They were unbelievably dominant in '09, and it does feel unjust that this group didn't win at least 1 flag.
Still hurts me. 2009. 2010. St Kilda. Forever.
