It is so important to have a specific set of troubleshooting procedures when you are doing a service call, and do not change course because of shiny object syndrome. Always go with your instinct, practice, and follow basic procedures in the same order to keep it simple, just like a sequence of operations. If you are consistently doing the same steps, you will start seeing and understanding the patterns of those refrigeration systems you are working on. Fixing equipment will become quicker, easier and you will have so much more confidence.
Always begin with the basics and never reset the equipment before doing all the basic checks. Start with a visual check looking at the condenser and evaporator coils, look for oil or leaks, check if fans are running, are the lights on, is the airflow is good, is there moisture or bubbles in the sight glass, check drains, is their power to the system, are any relays or other components. You can now start checking temperatures like the suction line, liquid line, discharge line, etc. If anything needs to be clean like a coil or a fan needs to be replaced do that first, even before putting a gauge on because you know your reading will not be on target. If you start adjusting components or try and fix the overall system problem before completing these basic checks, you may cause yourself more headaches than anything.
The whole point of having to go through troubleshooting procedures like this, for that specific application is to help you get your customer's system up and running, as fast as possible, so you can get to the next job or get home to be with your friends and family.
In this video, I go through some of the basic checks any tech should do, to get a basic understanding of what is happening in that system.

That Trevor is one thorough check list! Now I will check for a pen and paper to write that list down in order. Yes there are other checks yet, that is a best practice blueprint.

When I go back to my troubleshooting notes I always learn something new. So write it down because when you want to talk about it with another co worker or expert you have the actual numbers and you can come up with a solution. Something I have learned over the years is, never assume in Refrigeration.

I also try and get as much information from the customer but keep an open mind because that can lead to a frustration. so I'll take the info keep it in the back of mind and when doing a visual I'll filter in what necessary gr8 list though Trevor !!!

Yes, you always want to find out what the customer was seeing. Thanks, Sonny.

In house facility operator of aging low tech F&B food & beverage equipment, all too often gauging and goosing gas assuming leaky equipment (of which we have many) instead of employing big picture wholistic diagnosis and often overlooking something simple.
    Guilty.

As technicians we can do more harm putting the gauges on too often and contaminating the system.

Good. However, without your own face the focus should have been on the image on the screen
