On September 6, 1522, the "Victoria" sailed into harbor in southern Spain. The battered vessel and its 18 sailors were all that remained of a fleet that had departed three years before. Yet her voyage was considered a success, for the "Victoria" had achieved something unprecedented - the first circumnavigation of the globe. Ewandro Magalhaes shares the story of Magellan’s journey.

and that's the beginning of a 333-year colonization of Spain to our country, the Philippines. it all started from a mistake because Magellan thought our country was the spice island.

An interesting sidelight: Pigafetta was puzzled because his journal, which he so carefully and meticulously kept, was 1 day behind when he got back to Spain. Till the day he died, he searched and rechecked his journal, but he couldn't discover the error.
The truth was that he should've added 1 day when he crossed the International date line in the Pacific.

During that time the international date line has not yet been drawn in their chart, more or less 200 years later that the line was recognized after the invention of the chronometer watch. Still they are genius men of steel on a wooden ship..

They failed to mention that the ship's log showed that they were exactly one day off from the local time and date when they returned to Spain, which drew attention from the Pope among others and which was the first solid proof of the Earth's axial rotation. Another interesting factoid is that Pigafetta's account lingered in relative obscurity and only achieved fame long after his death...

Magellan was not the first to do it, he died on some beach in the Philippines. His captain Juan Sabastion Elcano who finished it.
in the Philippines, i was taught that a hero named Lapu-Lapu (mentioned in this video) killed Magellan because he was invading the Philippines not because he was trying to overthrow the rebels. the teachers made it obvious that he was the enemy.
Kind of stupid to try to invade a country with a few hungry sailors in the other side of their own country.
Seems like wherever you are history will be changed to your favor. Of course the west will play up Magellan as a hero who just helped out against a rebellion and died for his trouble, while we Filipinos will see him as an invader who died foolishly underestimating our ancestors. There probably is truth to both sides of the story.
The victors write history. For us, we were the victor as we fended off Spain at it's glory years. For them, it was a victory for a route to the spice islands was found.

I'm Filipino from Philippines, and I just had my 23andme today and I learned I'm 5% Iberian (Spanish or Portugal). So Thank you Spain for sending my ancestor to Philippines, without you...me and my entire clan wouldn't be alive today.

In about six minutes we hear about a three year journey that must have been the single greatest success of it's time. Navigation, exploration, the hopes and open eyes of its crew members were so unimaginably wide, so grand, that we can hardly conceive it.
And meanwhile, in the 21st century with all our space exploration, technology and knowledge...some people still believe the earth is flat. Jeez Louise....
Fun Fact: Contrary to popular belief here in the Philippines, Lapu-Lapu DID NOT kill Magellan. It was his men who succeeded to kill Magellan at the shores of Mactan. At that time, Lapu-Lapu was a community leader of old age; thus he did not take part physically in the Battle of Mactan.
Edit (18-Mar-21): The comment section is a complete mess, as expected in TH-cam. Very funny. Anyways, we must take the accounts of this event with a little bit of skepticism because of the scarcity of records documenting it. As far as I know, we only have the book of Antonio Pigafetta to rely on to plus local accounts. Quarrel all you like but one thing is certain: Magellan died in the Philippines.

Magellan was born in Sabrosa - on banks of Douro river- Portugal. I think the Sailors of Spain killed Magellan because they never accepted a Portuguese captain commanding them. i think the history must be rewrite . Maybe the true history is in Vatican . I am searching the true history. I have the book written by Pegafeta but I don't believe in it.

I just want to take this moment to thank you, TED-ED for doing this. This is such good learning material for the present generation in learning History of the Philippines. I am a social science teacher and I'm teaching history and everything was just spot on. This will boost the interest of my learners and help them not to be confined to reading alone their history because this video presentation will guide them to understand the process as well as clear representation. For learning History, you really have to imagine the things you are reading and studying. So, this will lessen their difficulty. Again, thanks a bunch. :D :D

Circumnavigation is possible in the flat earth theory. I actually don't know who is the most ignorant, the ones who truly believe in it or the ones who say its stupid without taking the time to learn about the theory (you). Saying that a Circumnavigation proves flat earthers wrong only shows that you dont know about the flat earth theory but dont hesitate to make fun of it just because it is the most popular opinion and will give you a false sense of intelligence superiority.
If you have any interest in knowing how Circumnavigation is possible in a flat earth, picture a circle where the North points to it's center, choose a random point and travel West, you will do a circle and reach the starting position.
I'm from cebu and yesssss this is the story we all grew up with. We even have a monument dedicated to Magellan called magellans cross
Technically, since Enrique originated in Southeast Asia and Magellan had brought him back to Spain only for him to travel back again to Southeast Asia, shouldn't he be the first to circumnavigate the globe? In Malaysian/Indonesian history, he is known as Panglima Awang, he's a native to Sumatra and lived in the Malacca Sultanate, it's a huge possibility that he's a Malay (since Malays are concentrated in the island of Sumatra and Peninsular Malaysia).

well he's short of few hundred miles, thats why the video mentioned IF he made it back to his country, it needed a record , an evidence if you will. the Victoria's crew made it back its recorded with evidence.
Enrique was Filipino because he was serving under the flag and king of Spain.

@@Farisss92 Yes, he was born in Sumatra, but Enrique might have settled somewhere in the Philippines after Magellan voyage. He also serves under the flag of Spain, following his master Magellan who claimed the Philippines for the Kingdom of Spain. Don't forget that he was also a Christian Catholic.
This was part of our lesson in Araling Panlipunan (Philippine History). Part of our examinations are the important dates, names of the people involved in this expedition, as well as the names of the 5 ships given to Magellan for this expedition.
Chile (the country where the magellan strait is) has 3 cities named after the Ships: Santiago (The capital) San Antonio (The main port) and Concepción
Just a side note. My history professor told us that there is a possibility that Pigafetta overestimated the no. of people lead by Lapu-Lapu who fought against the group of Magellan, this is because of the noted (based on other accounts) population of the island of Mactan at that time and the notion that maybe it was purposefully done to at least make it more noble for the side of Magellan in a sense that Lapu-Lapu's team won because of their supposed number and that Magellan refused the help of Raja Humabon. Though Pigafetta noted the battle formations made by the locals as they prepare to engage the team of Magellan. Still worth taking note of, who knows? History.

Well, the idea was presented to us by our history prof, and the readings were more of collated by herself thus I can't give you the exact links or references of those as I don't have them anymore. But if you want to learn more and read some first-second hand accounts on the pre-hispanic history of the nation, I can refer you to the Blair and Robertson's The Philippine Islands ( which you can try in the Gutenberg project site). This is noting that not every single thing that we will read will be and should be considered the utter and only truth, pointing that we still need to be critical. I also want to share that my prof also suggested that many of the accounts written were distorted in a manner wherein it will justify the further colonization of the archipelago (no such thing as alternative truths tho). We can have a meaningful discussion on such if you want.

@@007thematrix007 whether they were outnumbered of not. they made silly mistakes like wading in water with an armor on. By the time they reached the surf line they were exhausted. Lapu Lapu's men only had on a bahag (a type of loincloth) so they could move freely.

The true name is Fernando de Magalhães. In Spain is known as Magallanes and in English Ferdinand Magellan. His name was translated because the circumnavigation of the world was an important advance in knowledgement in Europe.
Ferdinand Magellan is the English version. Fernando de Magallanes is the Spanish version. Fernão de Magalhães is the Portuguese version. Magellan was born in northern Portugal region in the district of Vila Real.

As a speaker of both the Spanish and Cebuano languages, I love how you can see the Spanish translation of the Cebuano words from what Antonio Pigafetta heard back then on this video. It's so cool. Adlaw as "adlo" meaning "Sol/día" or day/sun and "oo" for "sí". It's cool!
Every time I go back to Cebu, I always remember Magellan how he never set foot on dry ground and when I do land at Mactan international airport, I know I'm going have a great, fun and safe Vacation in the Philippines.. :)
Enrique was a Cebuano. He was captured in the Philippines as a young boy and sold as a slave in Malacca where Magellan bought him in an auction. Pigafetta's journal entry said that Enrique stayed behind amongst the people who spoke the language of his childhood which is Cebuano.

He didn't though, Magellan actually had no intention of circumnavigating the world, just to go to the Spice islands and back to Spain. It was Juan Sebastián Elcano who took the decision to circumnavigate the world and really led the expedition that did it
GREAT POINT. Spain was not going to sink miilions of dollars in todays money to just circumnavigate, but to go there and backtrack bringing spices instead. So many bullshiters in the internet. They still say all over that Magellan the great navigator "Was the first to Circumnavigated the glove" which is a big LIE.
@@emergencylowmaneuvering7350 We don't know that at all, we don't know if Magalhães would've made the decision to go back to Spain backwards or to cross Africa, he never survived to make the plans. Both Magalhães and Elcano are incredible navigators, but we have to consider that after overestimating the size of the pacific, Magalhães would've probably not make the decision to backtrack. No one would. It would be actual suicide.

IT WAS DELCANO WHO DECIDED not to go back the pacific ocean way and take the risk of circumnavigating instead.

Fun Fact: If you go to Cebu in the Philippines, you will find a stone slab with a plaque on it, a monument to Ferdinand Magellan and his voyage. On the opposite side of the slab you will find another plaque, a monument to Lapu-Lapu, the Filipino warrior who slew Magellan.

Cebuano here. Actually, if you go to Cebu you will find a slab for Magellan but only to mark the spot where he docked but we have a statue to honor Lapu Lapu. Raja Humabon used Magellan as a pawn in his war with Lapu Lapu. Magellan's eagerness to impress the Raja was his downfall.
As far as my knowledge goes, you didn't miss anything. Awesome summary of the expedition! It's sad how spanish explorations are so easily forgotten. If you think about it, it definitely takes some guts (maybe some foolishness) to just take a boat and venture into the unknown...respect!

You know, it is annoying we do not learn in school this stuff. I know there is no time and we basically grab couple of bits of every decade but it would be nice to have some short of native culture information before the Spanish arrival. Anyhow, love from Spain!

The expedition was originally headed by Magellan so maybe the whole voyage will be honored to his name as the kapitan heneral and chief navigator he laid already the course back to Spain that del Cano followed after his death in mactan..
if not because of Magellan the voyage will never happen. If not his strong will the first mutiny could have succeeded

All you people are from Mactan ? I can't believe it.
I wanted to visit the Philippines some years ago after South East Asia, I already had my big plans, some weeks in Thailand again, then 1 month in Palawan and Philippines, and maybe Palau or Indonesia. but this was quite expensive, as I planned to rent a car, and all these plane tickets, some dives, etc.
I think I'll remember about Mactan when I'm ready to go ;-)

I'm Indonesian and I remember I learned about Ferdinand Magellan's journey back in English class, and also during social studies. And to be honest, I find it surprising how Magellan and his men managed to cross the Pacific Ocean even though most of them died, but it's still surprising to me because you know how back then, there are no planes or any air transportations, just ships.

He did not circumnavigate the world. He died in the Philippines after invading one of the islands. It was Sebastian Del Cano who made the whole circumnavigation. This is an integral part of our History lessons here in the Philippines.
As an Indonesian, we're taught about it nemerous time on the history lesson, about Magellan's journey n how they arrived in Maluku (Mollucca), and started to do the monopoly trade. And unfortunately, that's how the colonialization began😕

Wow, the Cebuano language (or more locally known as Sugbu-anon) was the first ever recorded Philippine language by a European Chronicler... I hope the Philippine Gov't will preserved this beautiful language and not only the tagalog one.

Next colonization goal: Mars or other planets in another galaxy. Who knows we are going to meet locals there that eventually kill 'our guy'?! You know that spices aren't things that make your food spicy but parts of plants that aren't leaves that you add to your food? For example licorice, which is sweet.

welniok Well, according to the dictionary, spicy means "flavored with or fragrant with spice". Say whatever you want, I know what spice is and I live in a country where various spices are originated from. People here love spice so much that white people who come here often complain that they can't stand the spiciness of the food being made here. The same thing applies to other Asian countries too such as Thailand.

By the way, the time that Magellan arrived in what is now present-day Philippines, was back then not called the Philippines. It was only until after that the Spanish then named the archipelago for King Philip.
I have complicated feelings about this video. in one hand, I'm grateful that they confirmed spherical shape of this earth. however, their expedition somehow had opened the scary destiny for our country. years after years of war and became vassals. I hope it won't happen again in the future; where a country desires another country's wealth and killing thousands because of that.

This is 1522, meanwhile in 1417 before Magellans voyage the ancient king of Sulu Philippines, known by the name King Paduka Batara of Sulu Philippines (Paduka Pahala in other sources) set sail for China for a tribute mission. Accompanying him in his journey were two other Muslim leaders as well as 340 members of their delegation, including Batara’s two wives and three sons.
As was the tradition during those days, the Sulu king also brought with him gifts-among them pearls, tortoiseshell, precious stones, and a “memorial inscribed on gold.” The purpose of the trip, after all, was to establish a friendship with the Ming Dynasty’s Emperor Yongle.
The Chinese annals identified Batara as the “eastern king” and the most superior among the three. The two other rulers, Maharaja Kolamating and Paduka Prabhu, were described as “western king” and “cave king,” respectively. It is believed that Paduka Prabhu was Paduka Batara’s brother-in-law who most likely came from Borneo.
After arriving in Chinese shores in August of 1417, the group made its way to Hangzhou where they embarked on a fleet of barges that would take them to Beijing. The Emperor was delighted with the gifts he received from the Sulu delegates, and he reciprocated it with probably the finest hospitality the group had ever experienced-silk clothing, private accommodation, and entertainment worthy of royalty
I strongly recommend the biography of Magellan written by Stefan Zweig. It's one of the best biographies ever written.

As far as I know, an interesting thing about Magellan’s battle against the natives in Mactan is that they were planning to use their ships and the cannons. But the battlefield, unbeknownst to them, was shallow, so they had to abandon it and fight the natives head-on.
