Clarity on Homosexuality and the Biblical Term "Abomination"

  • Is Leviticus just offering advice about medical health? Is it identifying homosexual acts as sinful or just potentially unhealthy? Can calmly and carefully try to understand the passage in context? I hope so.
I think that the overall context of the passage makes its application pretty clear and even though our current culture tends to misunderstand this as condemning certain kinds of people instead of certain kinds of behavior we simply cannot be biblically faithful without standing our ground on this topic.
This is just one question from a long interview I did for the moderators of the r/Bible subreddit. They asked their subreddit to send me a bunch of questions and I spent a lot of time preparing so that I would be able to offer the best answers I could. I'll be posting these answers as individual videos so keep an eye out for the rest in the set. Here's a playlist where I will add them as they come out. • Mike Winger Reddit Int...

A lot smarter but the blue print is the same. The bible also agrees with abortions and tolerates father-daughter incest. Eating shrimp is an abomination. Any sexual act that is not missionary sex between husband and wife is sodomy. Waring different fabrics is an abomination. Women who teach men or take the lead in any way are going to hell. We are human and have choice. Even if your gay, you don’t have to sin, just like a addict in recovery has a choice to not sin, (use). We chose not to break laws, because there is a consequence. Gods laws and consequences are much harsher.

      .
Christians do agree what God's laws are. The 10 Commandments, for starters. I know of no serious Christian who doubts any of them. There may be some fine point details such as whether or not "honoring your father and mother" includes something like taking them to Disney World or not, but generally speaking all Christians agree that honoring our father and mother is God's law.
      .
There are other commands in Scripture that do spark debate, but I would hold this premise out to anyone: Christians agree on the substance and forms of God's law at a higher rate than any other group of people agree with the laws of their country. Christians may transgress the law of God, but when confronted with it, they turn and repent.

Apparently how you interpret the Bible is “it’s wrong” without much elaboration other that it’s a relationship without procreation. What’s to say about hetero relationships that can’t or won’t have kids? Is that considered abnormal or is it normal just because it’s heterosexual? There’s just so much that doesn’t make sense even reading the passages myself and what I just see out in the world, so much conflicting opinions. While there are other aspects of our culture I don’t agree with, I feel uncomfortable about any broad statements that condemn it. This debate is often why I don’t consider myself a Christian despite my Christian upbringing and being undeniably heterosexual. End rant.

I'm asking you to consider this passage in Romans chapter 1: 18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though they know God's decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.
So, based on this, can you still consider yourself to be a Biblical "born again" Christian, according to John 3 : 16-21?

He was so influential he divided history into before and after his death. Though modern writers are trying to change it from BC and AD to BCE and CE but that still makes me laugh because renaming it doesn't change the fact the turning point between the two and the event that defines both is still when Jesus died.

This has been my normal my entire life . And believe me , I did try to not be this way due to religion and "moral obligation ", and ended up making me miserable , and my ex wife miserable . • @nesbqr0508

I agree. The focus always seems to be on sex while deeper connections, such as love, are ignored or belittled (i.e. "You only THINK you love this person, but what you feel isn't true "love" because it's impossible between two men/women"). This is also not even getting into the original languages and how they do not translate directly into English. I have read the surviving parts of the Bible in their original languages, having been a Classical Archaeology major in college, and there really was no concept of homosexuality in the ancient Near East and Mediterranean cultures. In fact, the Leviticus passage had the word for prostitution and did not even mean what we understand as homosexuality today, though some people may argue against this. Anyway, arguments such as that homosexual sex is a base "beastly" desire willfully ignore that homosexual couples can love and care for each other in the same way as any heterosexual couple. My brother is gay. I always knew he was "different" even before I knew what "gay" was. He tried to hide it for so long, but honestly, he wasn't fooling anyone. It's just who he is. He told me when we were in high school multiple times that he hates how he feels and would give anything to make himself "normal." But he can't help that he doesn't find women attractive, physically or emotionally. Again, like you, no physical, emotional, or sexual abuse. We grew up in a happy, low 2nd class family. Tightknit extended family, etc. He's been happily married for 9 years now to my brother-in-law. They do not have children because they don't want them, which is fine. Love is not sex and sex is not love. Similarly, love is not lust and lust is not love. Conflating the two is where people lose me in this argument. No one will ever get me to believe that love is a sin. Why would God make someone gay and want them to live unhappily and incapable of loving their spouse? That makes no sense to me. Then you ruin not only your own life but also the life of your husband/wife. I don't believe God is cruel. I believe in God. I believe in the 10 commandments, and I believe in the 7 deadly sins. I believe Jesus was sent to Earth to die for our sins. However, I do not believe love is a sin. Lust is a sin, but not love. That is all. Have a good day.

It was hard to watch because I'm thinking in my head, that poor squirrel is basically being raped while trying to eat yet, she hardly seemed bothered by it. It's actually a good point to use with someone because if they want to play the "animals do it" card you could explain to them if you want to go that route, you'd have to accept the other harsh realities that come with animal behavior.

No, but humans do engage in sexual relations which is instinct. The urge to eat, sleep, have sex and others is common amongst all animals. Humans ....are also animals too. Men who cut their hair and shave ....are going to hell too according the bible. Basically we are all going to hell. Humans are very similiar to animals in terms of instincts. To say we are not is rather silly.

Gluttony and fasting are two separate things...
You don't fast to take care of gluttony.
Some assembles get people to believe that..As a matter of fact I was in one..
They eat..They eat...like there's no tomorrow and then they look at themselves saying,,OMG I am getting fat..By then some are not getting some well over weight...
And so,,they get up on the pulpit and announces a fast for such and such a duration of time..
Then they let it be known to the whole world that they are fasting..
The other misconceptions that some walk around believing is that everything is demonic driven. And that's the furthest from the truth..
A child of GOD has three enemies..
      The world=vanity
      Our flesh=cravings
      The Devil=situations run by demons
And so,,What you have is a flesh problem..
It's no different from an alcoholic,,a drug addict and whatever the flesh cravings that a person is hooked on..
I have friends that were alcoholics and they never fasted,,prayed yeah,,and they kick the habit..Drug addicts as well
There are those who kick the habit and they never turn back..
There are those who kick it and turned back..
And there are those that never was able to kick the habit,,the habit kicked them..
Again...Like I just told someone..Take it to JAHOVAH,,GOD,, in pray..
Don't get tired of taking it to him..
I do not have the problem of gluttony but there are time when I just feel like eating out of control...
You what helps me,,something very simple...I turn on the television get to some news story that focuses on the parts of the world where the natives have very little or no food at all to eat.
Like what's going on in Haiti or Afghanistan or many other parts of the world..
And I see many of them eat one and they,,do not know where other one is coming from and they're still surviving,,only by the grace of GOD..
And so...I then say if I eat little or nothing for the day I to will not die.
I will survive by the grace of GOD just like these folks...
And another thing share your food..
GOD said it's better to give than to receive..
You might have heard that saying in regards to cash by some preacher..
Well the same thing can be done with food...
Remember you give it to you and you receive from you...
Better to give..Give it out to folks that's in need and,,give as much as you can give,,and I am not only talking about days like thanksgiving but rather as often as GOD blesses you..
And when it became habitual in you.
The pleasure of giving to those that needs it more you
That should be of a good help...
It certainly helps me out nicely...
      But first and foremost...
Take it to the LORD in pray..

I believe a lot of people have a miss consumption on what gluttony meant when Jesus spoke about it. It didn’t literally mean to eat too much The point he was making was that a person was so involved with their food that they would not share it with anybody else that was the point and they would not give it to anybody it wasn’t about the amount of food. It was targeted towards people not giving to others especially food

Just wanted to let you know why some people compare humans and animals as the same. The theory of evolution is what gives those who believe it the ability to compare humans to animals. They view it as if we are descendants of apes we are part of the animal kingdom and not a special being created in the image of God.

    • @jonathandoe1367
      @jonathandoe1367 2 ปีที่แล้ว

It must be pointed out that the veracity of evolution has no bearing on metaethics. Error theory would apply to spontaneous generation just as well, and non-natural moral realism would apply under common descent. Evolution vs creation is just an argument as to how many instances of abiogenesis have occurred. Both positions are entirely compatible to Christianity, and both refute Atheism (as per the Teleological Argument).

@@jonathandoe1367 I said it was not compatible with Christianity. I said nothing about evolution being compatible with anything else. I understand the theory of evolution. I am saying you don't understand the implications behind it. I do not know if you believe in God but if you do then you do not understand who he is or that he is the most powerful being in and outside the universe. The Bible says that God created the universe and he holds it in his hand (Isaiah 40:12). It also says that he numbered the stars and calls them each by name (Psalm 147:4). God created nature and controls it (Amos 4:7, Matthew 8:24-27). How do I explain abiogensis sans intelligent design? How do I account for the unlikeliness of a random universe to be hospitable to life, etc? God. You said it yourself. The chances of everything happening and us being here are extremely low. So low in fact that it is a greater impossibility for it not to happen than it is for God to have done it. When you say that God didn't do it, its like saying that we are just randomly here and that God didn't have a purpose or plan for humans. God has a purpose and a plan for each and every one of us. Even beyond that though, the biggest reason that evolution is not compatible to Christianity is because it takes away the need for a savior and denies the infallibility of the Bible. In other words, either evolution is right and the Bible is lying or the Bible is true and evolution is a lie. To believe in evolution, one must believe that millions of years have existed from the time that slime (or one cell organisms) developed into man. These millions of years before man included death of creatures. This is in denial of the Bible when humans and the world are cursed (which includes death) because Adam and Eve disobeyed God. So either the curse (with death) was around for millions of years before Adam and Eve disobeyed or it wasn't. If it was then the Bible is lying, if it wasn't then evolution is a lie. If evolution is true, then why do we have need of a savior? If evolution is a lie, we need Jesus to save us from the curse. Many things in the scientific community points to evolution being a lie. When the scientific community finds lies it confuses them and instead of saying maybe evolution is wrong, they try to work around the lie to prop up the lie. In conclusion, when science can no longer question if evolution is right or wrong but must work on supporting it, it has become a religion to those who believe it. Those who believe and do not question are the same as those in the past who were against the progress of science.

Perhaps you'd prefer Missing the Mark's Theistic Evolution and the Book of Genesis? Or Dr James Tour's Does Science Make Faith Obsolete? on Biola University.
Begging the question. You just said the reason that evolution is not compatible with Christianity is that it contradicts Christianity. Would you care to demonstrate that it does? There are many who suppose there is no such contradiction, and you've done nothing to argue otherwise. Please watch at least one of those videos I mentioned.
No, there are many pieces of evidence that point towards evolution, and many that point against. To state that either position is necessarily lying is disingenuous.
Do you take Dr James Tour or Michael Jones to unquestioning men? On the contrary, I'd say they given robust thoughtful defense of the faith. Or Dr William Lane Craig. To assume that all proponents of evolution champion the Neo-Darwinian Synthesis is absurd.

As someone who knows a lot about animal behaviors, I agree that, for the most part, we should not let animals determine what is acceptable for humans. However, I get frustrated with people equating rape to animal behaviors. Rape happens in the animal kingdom, but it's not the norm. It probably happens less among most animal species than with humans. It's often not acceptable even to animals.
That's why the males go through so much to attract the females. They dance, they call, they build elaborate homes, they show off, they give her food, they show submission, etc. With some spiders, the male encourages her to eat him while mating. The males are often at the mercy of the females as they seek mates. There are few exceptions like emus. But with emus, the males are 100 percent responsible for eggs and chicks.
With my chickens, when a rooster finds food he has this special cluck he'll do to call the hens and will let them have the food. In return, he usually gets to mate. Now, there are some roosters that will chase the hens intending to use force, but roosters will not likely pass on their genes like this. Often she will run to a more proper rooster who will defend her. Or if the offending rooster succeeds, she can expel his sperm. He will not get away with trying to take a shortcut. If he wants to pass on his genes, he can't force the girl. He has to properly win her over or he's just wasting energy.

Two ideas come to mind... There is a difference between "homosexuality" and "same sex attraction" and the difference is rarely noted. Homosexuality is an identification and same sex attraction is a sexual desire. Everybody has desires and temptations to do things that they know are wrong and outside of Gods will and plan. I think adultry would be fun but I don't accept that it is right. That does not mean I won't fail and in a moment of weakness have sex outside of marriage. However, as a Christian I am unwilling to accept that, that behavior is good because I know it is unloving to God and my wife. I see same sex attraction in the same way. The difference between same sex attraction and homosexuality is that homosexuality does not resist the urges. They identify with the temptation and not only declare it as ok but as correct and loving. We as Christians have a very simple task if not easy. Trust in the Jesus and live as he taught (1st John 3). Christ taught love YHWH and live others. How can you claim love for YHWH and reject the very basics of the natural human design and function He created. Much less being formed by God as a male or female and deciding "I think better". Sometimes everybody feels like a twix and sometimes they don't. But no matter how you feel, part of faith is trusting that your creator knew what he was doing when he made you a male or female. Doubt, temptation, longings and desires are all natural and normal for Christians and non-Christians. Accepting something as right or just based upon feeling, desire or emotion is not acceptable in any culture, government, religion or society as proof of acceptability or correctness. That would be complete anarchy.

When God’s grace, through the Scriptures, opened my eyes toward this sin and the worship of food, I came to an understanding of so many other idols in my life. Overeating is a gateway sin for me. OverIndulging the flesh is a self defeating battle against the Spirit, through Whom we are to lead holy and godly lives in Christ Jesus. The first sin in the Garden of Eden involved food. Surely, our attitude toward eating and appetite is no small thing. Please, Mike, do that video.

“He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.” - Proverbs 28:9
I think Evangelicals should take stock of all the laws they don't want to listen to and then worry about the planks in their own eye. When people come to faith they have to deal with the things that they do that they feel compelled to get in alignment with God's will vs their own.
People like to give wishy washy speeches about "different types" of laws and who they think the laws applied to, but I have yet to see an Evangelical pull out a complete list of all 600+ laws with all the ones they like highlighted and all the ones they don't think they need to follow crossed out. It's easier to wave hands than to take an honest look at how far we fall from keeping the law and how completely disinterested so many Christians are in the law. They just enjoy judging others while telling Jesus that they themselves have kept all the laws since birth.
Christians would do well to stop worrying about using the law to judge and instead dive into the law to see how we can be better. I enjoy studying the law because it is the personal development section of the Bible. Until you read and understand Psalm 119, I think it's impossible to have the right attitude about the law which is why so many people get mired in their pet judgements about what other people are doing.

@@voiceofreason466 Thanks for replying in a reasonable fashion. I know this is an incredibly touchy subject and tempers can flair easily so I appreciate your response. This is an incredibly complex topic so my response is necessarily going to have to be long, and honestly this isnt even half of what I could say on the subject. and unfortunately youtube has flagged my channel for instant deletion for any post I make around this topic because I hold a non-google approved opinion. So the best I can do is say that there are obvious problems for both the individual and society.
on the issue of society. the reasons a person might end up this way seem to be similar to the reasons a person might end up addicted, which is why I used that as an example. Experiments have been done, and in conjunction with historical record we can see that when societies collapse rates of sexual and social divergence goes up. And it seems to be that the failure of the society first fuels this increase in divergence, then the divergence fuels the failure in a kind of feed back loop. I mean consider for a moment that we got marriage equality in 2015 and within a handful of years we've seen everything from underage strippers to the absolute and socially accepted destruction of basic definitions of sex and gender. It's obviously not good for society.
As for the individual. people who live in this fashion self report FAR higher rates of depression, and this is self reporting is independent of how the society they live in views them. The rate of mental disorders beyond depression is also extremely high. Things like bipolar disorder and even schizophrenia are vastly disproportionate to the rest of the population. Self harm within certain subgroups of the community are likewise extremely high, and again, this is the case whether or not the society around them is accepting. aside from much higher rates of non-monogamy as you pointed out, domestic abuse is far higher. All of this combined with the well established party scene and the fact that a majority of people within the community perform some level of body modification, ranging from the somewhat reasonable to the absolutely grotesque and I think its clear that this isn't good for the individual either.

Honestly. I think it's to do with the fact that homosexual relationships cannot be 'blessed' with children. Children are considered very important for a lot of reasons in most old cultures not just Christianity. It's only through the advent of science that homosexuals can realise a lot of their desires. So by that logic you could argue that it's not natural and your killing off your family name and the things God has tried to birth here on earth through your family. So, some people would argue that sex is not entirely about reproduction, well it's true that it's more complicated than most of the animal kingdom, but by and large you should also observe that human Children need there parents for a lot longer in order to survive to adulthood, so while pair bonds are about more than sex, it's still about protecting the offspring, it's not desirable for a man to have to use his resources (which in days gone by would have been harder to come by) to support offspring that is not his own... So i think there's a practical element to what is said in the bible, which is ripe with words like abomination all throughout. So, that my thoughts on why there might be a practical element to what is in the bible. All that being said, i agree with Mike winger when he says it's become impossible to talk about these things no matter how nice you are, but i also acknowledge that there are Christians out there who have been outright abusive about this.
