“Above all, be at ease, be as natural and spacious as possible. Slip quietly out of the noose of your habitual anxious self, release all grasping, and relax into your true nature. Think of your ordinary emotional, thought-ridden self as a block of ice or a slab of butter left out in the sun. If you are feeling hard and cold, let this aggression melt away in the sunlight of your meditation. Let peace work on you and enable you to gather your scattered mind into the mindfulness of Calm Abiding, and awaken in you the awareness and insight of Clear Seeing. And you will find all your negativity disarmed, your aggression dissolved, and your confusion evaporating slowly like mist into the vast and stainless sky of your absolute nature.” ― Sogyal Rinpoche, The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying

This is my favorite video right now. Im curious how one can be the Witness of what is by focusing on the Witness yet "remain cheerful" when bad things happen because to replace sadness with cheerfulness would be attempting to alter rather than Witness. Is he saying both work?
I think the encouragement is more to see and allow the sadness as it arises but not get fooled by it or stuck in it. If we really investigate the phenomenon of "sadness" as it arises in the present moment, there is so much to understand. As an emotion it is empty and ephemeral, so we can allow it to arise and cease without getting overwhelmed or believing it will last forever. See it like passing clouds. Secondly, we really need to investigate and understand "who" this person is that believes (1) they are a person, (2) that this sadness belongs to 'me'. With deepening practice one can come to understand the teachings of Emptiness here, and in really understanding that in the heart, not just intellectually, that naturally gives rise to happiness and cheerfulness and one realises that it is all a dream and a projection of our own empty minds - concepts, ideas and beliefs, etc.. Being free from all of those delusions makes one naturally happy! Hope this helps a bit
Hi Satyam, essentially what Rinpoche is asking us to do is to simply allow whatever arises in your body or mind to arise without trying to suppress, indulge, judge, or push it away. So, for example, if an emotion of anger or sadness arises, the practice is to recognise it, feel it as it manifests but don't get swept away in it, especially not analysing it (why did this happen? whose fault was it? etc..), but neither should we have a negative response to it and just want to "kill it" or see it as something bad or wrong. Rather, the "settling directly into it" means we become more the objective observer and rather than identifying with everything that is arising in our mind/body as "me" or "mine," as good or bad, as right or wrong, we stay centered as the Witness only. You can imagine it's like sitting on the bank of a river watching the water flowing past - sometimes it flows slowly, sometimes rapidly, sometimes clear, sometimes murky. Just stay quietly and safely on the bank without jumping in and getting swept away. Settle into that place within you that is aware and awake - that knows what is coming and going - but remains unaffected, safe and calm within the quiet heart. You know that place, you just have to rediscover it again and uncover it's wisdom and joy. Hope that helps a bit. With all good wishes in your practice

@@SamaneriJayasara can't thank you enough for this. It is cleared now you explained it so well. Again thanks for the explanation and videos you put. It's of great help
Simplicity expounded. Almost a contradiction in terms.
I couldn't understand 'settle into' until you posted this teaching on Mahamudra
