Regarding Bowie, I didn't know the BBC were superstitious. Many banned songs had great success because everybody goes out to buy it to find out why it was banned. Best free publicity available.
I would have added Status Quo.
In 1996 they released a cover of Fun, Fun, Fun with The Beach Boys and it went to no. 24 but Radio 1 refused to play it saying they where too old.
Status Quo took Radio 1 to court but the court sided with Radio 1.
In 2002 Status Quo released a single called Jam Side Down that went to no. 17 and Radio 1 lifted their ban and started to play their music again.
That was because Matthew Bannister took over from Radio One in the mid-90s and he was trying to ensure that a lot of the "old guard" artists weren't getting much airplay on their station. Cliff Richard began to suffer that same fate from the mid-90s onwards. They only got played on the top 40 on that station, but no other time would they play them.
Bloody hell. Status Quo is absolutely timeless rock gods. I am so proud I got to see them live before the heartbreaking passing of Rick. Lately I have really started to enjoy Overdose as a driving song. But most their repertoire are pretty amazing. Not bad for a band that based its entire career on one riff, and an old bickering couple with Telecasters. ❤
I remember listening to Lola on Radio 1 back in the early 70's. I think the offensive line might have been changed to cherry cola. The BBC banned Space Oddity but allowed Ashes to Ashes

Paul McCartney's Give Ireland Back to the Irish was also banned along with the original version of John Lennon's Working Class Hero
Some singles that had sweary titles got banned like "Too Drunk To Fuck" by Dead Kennedys and "The Man Don't Give A Fuck" by Super Furry Animals. And then of course there's the tracks released by Kunt & The Gang/The Kunts, Radio One would neither mention the artist, nor the titles of their tracks.

From what I recall, Sing If You're Glad To Be Gay was on an EP and the lead track on that EP was 2,4,6,8 Motorway

I'm sure if someone on R1 had actually listened to The Sweet's "Little Willy" in the early 70s rather than dismissing it as more glamrock they'd have banned it

BaBack in the day music was music their were some Cool bands my favourites were Queen, Petshop boys, David Bowe, Prince his song purple rain that was a beautiful song love it 💜💜, all put together i will always be a big fan off Michael Jackson he was a amazing singer dancer. he was always singing and dancing with his brothers the Jackson 5 always in the front he was loved by so many fans and made it big and he became our King Of Pop he wrote some beautiful songs.🎶🎶
Queen, Bowie and Prince are good but pet shop boys no and Jackson well don't even get me started with that one
