  • On October 7th, 1985, Puerto Rico went through the deadliest mudslide ever recorded to date. Barrio Mameyes was once a harmonious hood in the mountains of Ponce, but it was unfortunately built on land that was never stable enough to be habitated, leading to its collapse during a tropical storm and killing 130 people, most of which were never found again. My friend @elhippieboricua and I met with Rosa, a survivor who lost her entire family to this landslide. Rosa showed us around what was once her home for 18 years...

There are no words that can describe the entire horror of what happened or to those that survived and had to carry on. You go to bed one night and the next day your entire life has changed, and not for the better.
I really appreciate your video for showing this. It goes to show that as a human we can survive just about anything.
I'm sure there was serious despair and depression that they had to have experienced.
Once again thank your @LauWasHere for showing this. This should never be forgotten. Those people deserved to be remembered.

Lau, Mijita, me hiciste llorar. The impact of this story- the humanity, the pain and strength shown by that amazing lady, the possible oversights, the all-encompassing tragedy was heart-wrenching. Thank you for this lesson in history, human loss, and the reminders to value and cherish family and loved ones.
Bendiciones y Paz.

Thank you for sharing this story. People forget and don’t learn from their history. I lived in Puerto Rico when this happened. I remember what a big tragedy this was. I left to the states a few weeks after and sadly, pre internet, couldn’t keep track of what happened in the aftermath. This woman is a survivor….tough. Kids today are not as resilient.

I remember that night, I lived in the town next to Ponce. I vividly remembered my dad saying something was going to happen tonite cause his hens and chickens would not stop cackling. When early morning arrived, the news came of the mudslide. My theater teacher Mr. Rosado belinged to the PRNG at the time so he was deployed for the rescue effort. Never forget! Come to think of it, my neighbors in Pennsylvania were from the area. They suffered so much and had PTSD...Thank you, Lau for bringing this story to life. And for your respect towards Doña Rosa. Wow.
This vid tugged at my heartstrings. After watching this I was emotionally drained to say the least. I'm sure it was not an easy one to film either. However, in my opinion, this was presented with honor, and respect. You honored the memory of those who didn’t survive with respect as well. I also believe that you gave Rosa some closure and/or some peace in telling her story. Rosa is a warrior for living through it and having the strength to recount what she saw and experienced. I'm sure that wasn't easy to do. She will constantly be in my thoughts and prayers. The EMF session you had at the end gave me chills. I’m sure in some way you helped those who passed go into the light. To close, this was exceptional Lau. You should feel very proud of the work you did on this. Well, done

Brazen, your words tugged at MY heartstrings 🥺 this comment meant so much. I truly did my best to give Rosa the stage to tell her story and tell the facts of this tragedy because there is a lot of things covered up or forgotten about it in the general history of it. I truly felt like this was her first time telling her story her way, to the media, without filters and without professionalism. Just an honest conversation between human beings and a camera recording. Thanks so much for watching ❤️

I remember this when it happened still living in Puerto Rico. I remember going to school and the teachers talking about it. It was terrifying as a kid especially living in the countryside. Trabajé en la Cruceta del Vijía años después overnights and I had the audacity to walk to Hotel Intercontinental around 2:30 and 3 a.m. alone and I swear honest to God you still can hear los gritos de las almas perdidas del las victimas del derrumbe.

I also watched the one from when you came to Boston and Cambridge, MA and if there's any plans for you to visit Boston again I would gladly give you a tour since I live here for years. I do photography and love cemeteries shots.

Tremendo reportaje!

Excelente video. Thanks so much for sharing. This one is heartbreaking and really makes one think. I remember the heavy rains that day like it was yesterday, and I found out about the landslide in the morning newspaper. I always thought some day I'd get the full story, and it so happened it was through your video years later.

Young lady you have more 🏀🏈⚾⚽ than me and any other man out there.
It is really sad to hear about this and like every other disaster everybody forgets about the lost ones.
In Google it said it was a tropical storm and the lady said that the lake overflow but I don't see any lake around there in Google maps.
I would like to travel over there to clean up that place.
    C'mon 🇵🇷 let's stand up and let's don't forget about this place

Why thank you 😂 but yes, there’s a lot about this mudslide that Rosa told us that is not on the Internet, or if it is, it’s hard to find. I tried to find as much footage as I could of the news and what not back then and even that was limited. There was also a lot she told us behind the scenes, so much unanswered questions. But if you ever decide to head over there, it’ll be much appreciated 🫶🏼

DEP Fam. Torres Serrano.
