How to make your own WordPress theme from scratch (2019)

- This is a relatively simple explanation of how to set up a basic WordPress theme. Including enqueueing of css and JS, as well as navigational menus, archives and pages and single blog posts. There's much more than this, but hopefully this will give you a quick start.
- To run WordPress locally, download and install XAMPP www.apachefriends.org/index.html

@mrdigital I'm at 25 mins into the video but I've found that the style.css is no longer updating anything. The background just stays black no matter what colour code I write in.

Finally someone focusing of the important parts, and not messing around with env setup, and CSS.
It is mid 2020 now. This is still THE tutorial. With HTML and CSS skills, basic JS skills and an over all understanding of PHP (no actual coding skills), I am actually able to follow and this opens a whole new world for me.

I'm thinking of creating a series for simple Wordpress theme development which would be a more extended version of this video. It would include setting up a new theme and all of the functionality to go with it, like Navigation, widgets, blog setup, pagination, tags, post thumbnails, advanced custom fields, best way to cache (make the website run as quick as possible), the best hosting options. Please if you can comment any other features you'd like to learn so I can put it in one nice series for you! Cheers

Dude, I just found your channel and this is one of the best tutorials I've seen so far! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and please make more! Also SEO wise just keep in mind using the H3 right after the H1 tag on the archive.php page is something I won't recommend to you guys, rather than that try to write a rule in your CSS and make your H2 headings look smaller.
To impart so much knowledge in a time of 46 minutes and 58 seconds this is not something everyone can do. Thank you for that.

Same here... The thing is that most of the bloggers out there are actually trying to sell their own themes and template engines. Therefore their real goal is not to really help you do things by yourself, but rather to hook you in and then get you frustrated, so you end up buying their product. This is why the information they seem to provide isn't complete and often also outdated...

I don't even know javascript but just watching this video alone has taught me so many basics. Well done man. I honestly would reccommend beginner/intermediates to start with videos like this because instead of just memorizing syntax you actually get to connect what you're coding to real world results in a popular platform like wordpress

What does JavaScript have to do with anything here? Nothing used for Wordpress dev is related to JavaScript in any way...
[ IF! ] - You've watched many more tutorials on this subject: with all the teachers going through their own individual preferences for [php if while] statements, then this is a breath of fresh air.
No mucking about with this one, quick - convenient and concise, from demystifying the header.php and footer.php files, and also what that functions.php file actually, and on the fly; clearly explaining how and why they all work and play together.
This is a speed course, but highly recommend: (if the rest is finally making sense.)
Someone requested the code, here is an example of the index.php file in a theme called 'BlankSlate'
As you can see, it's very close. The theme is available here:-

Absolutely class. A little fast at times but with pause rewind etc. Great to over and over. You also do a fantastic job of explaining why and not only that you just need it. I got a few things wrong following this, but felt I could troubleshoot myself (and did) after watching.

First time I'm touching wordpress theme development and this video is the best thing I could ever click to help me.
Great tutorials, really helped me get to grips with creating my own theme.
If I could change one thing, I'd say pause for like 1 or 2 seconds after typing out some code before you switch screens. Sometimes it was really hard to pause the video at the exact moment all the code I needed was on screen before you jumped away.

I used the video speed options to slow the video down to 0.75% speed for the first time through, so I could keep up in the editor, then speed it up to 1.25% when I had to play back stuff to see if I missed a step. Speed control features help a lot.
Then your reaction time is super slow because I managed to pause the vids at the right times without any struggle... also... like TH-cam has this thing called stepping frame by frame by pressing the keys for < and > for a reason, so I suggest using it...
Literally glued to the screen for the whole video. I never understood how WP is put together but this has just booted the doors open for me!

I understood almost everything here. this is the first video that made sense and explains the bigger picture of a Wordpress theme. thank you for this. I am very excited to learn more. it is not like other videos that handhold you into stuff. you have a great way of explaining what you're doing and why you're doing it by making mistakes. the best was when I spotted a mistake before you even came back to fix it. very optimistic about making my own theme from scratch.

A course is listed as $150 one week, and drops to $10 the next.

Thanks for this clear explanation! It's been a while since I builded a theme from scratch, so it was very helpful to refresh my mind. I noticed you are using packages for Sublime to auto complete with Wordpress Codex. I never thought of that, very convenient! I can recommend the Wordpress Developer Resources package as well. With this you can right click on any function and look it up in de Wordpress Documentation. Also the trick to view your website as a guest in incognito is a good one. I just have one question, why do you set the version number for jQuery 3.4.1 to 1 in functions.php?

Great work. I have achieved all the points covered in this tutorial. I am very happy that I have made a complete them from scratch with the help of your video, otherwise it would be very difficult. Your actions were very fast and I had to pause all the time. If you could take a movement whenever you finished a line or code it would be easy to pause or else even to pause, was a little bit difficult. Even though it helped me a lot. As a student I would like to ask "what next.?". "Deep drive more in Themes" or "How to make plugins?" which video will you suggest?. Thank You once again.
