People seem to forget that there was a 42yr gap between Stanley Cup wins between 1955, and 1997. In that span, the wings missed the playoffs quite often. They actually missed the playoffs 19times in that span; including 1971-1977, and 1979-1983. In fact, in their 98 seasons, they've only made the playoffs 64 times. While I agree Lalonde needs to go, people need to chill about Stevie. It took him 8 seasons to make the Lightning a contender. He's only been working on the Wings for 5 seasons.
Its ironic that Stevie doesn't want to admit he's wrong by getting rid of Gru, but his reputation only worsens the longer he keeps him around. Maybe he should come down and coach the Wings himself, because I believe he would be a much better coach than GM.
The illitches have never(?) fired a coach mid season. My assumption is that this team is stuck with lalonde until the end of the season when his contract runs out. This offseason the wings will shed Lalonde and his disastrous system, Kane, Petry, Fischer, Husso, Berger, Lyon, Motte. I wouldn’t be opposed to bringing back Motte and Berger on good deals. That’s a lot of cap space and roster spots to fill with young guys who are ready (Cossa, Danielson, Mazur, etc) and sign some players. Yzerman has done poorly in free agency so far, but this team also isn’t in a cup contending window yet. If he continues to make bad signings that keep them from getting to that point, he’s for sure at fault, but to this point I think things are shaping up nicely for the future despite this atrocity of a season
I think bringing back Kane and adding the likes of Tarasenko was to keep fans coming through what was predicted to be a year of regression. Danielson looked pretty damn good this preseason. I think fans are frustrated (rightfully so) and I would have liked Perron to stay. But he wanted a longer deal than Steve offered. We want instant gratification. Steve seems to have been eyeing 25-26 and onward for a while. He's referenced the Sabres and Canadians as the teams that will be his competition. Last I checked neither is good now either. Maybe that seems like a copout but what do fans want? Trade the future to finish in the second wild card or miss the playoffs again this year by a hair? I can't speak for out of market DRW fans, but we stood by the Detroit Lions of ages before they finally put it together. I can take another year of mediocrity if it means we have a good core for years to come in a year or two. I think we have made some excellent selections with our picks. Draft lotteries are fickle things. What if you tank and don't get top 5? It can happen. I'm not quite ready to throw Yzerman to the wolves. Lalonde? He can go.
@@theDaveStanzitoI completely agree, and I am an out of market wings fan. Born in raised in Pittsburgh, but I’ve been a wings fan since I was a kid. I do think that Yzerman believed after last year that this team had a shot to compete for playoffs and bringing back Kane and adding senko was twofold, it gave the fans some pick moves to feel good about, made the team better (on paper at least), but also neither deal is long term so they don’t hurt the team moving forward. I do not think ranking is right for this team. Like you said, the season we finished last by a mile, we picked 4th. Nothing is guaranteed in a lottery and outside of the top 5(?) guys this draft isn’t great. Yzerman has had a very long road view of this rebuild from the start, but the bear miss last year has made the fans want more now instead of continuing to be patient. Fans want everything all at once and it’s just not possible, especially for a team in year 5 of a total rebuild without a superstar on the roster. I think lalonde is a problem and will be gone, but I think next year will be better and 26-27 will be the year we break out finally
Detroit finished 8th in 21/22. If they wanted Will Smith they would have needed to send Raymond and Seider to GR and probably trade Larkin. Bringing up Michkov is just pointless. He wanted to be in Philly and he used the leverage he had to make it happen.
I tend to agree if Ken Holland or anyone else was the gm we would all be calling for his job. But you can't deny his drafting track record in the first round. I also think it's pretty obvious the bedrad draft is and was deep but irs been 2 years. How are people gonna say Leo and Adam are stars? What has Columbus Chicago and Anaheim done since they were drafted? They have been bottom feeders. It's takes time no matter what
A case study of the Buffalo Sabres should tell us what to avoid. Yzerman is smart enough to recognize this. I would just like to see a bit more creativity in the draft like moving up via a trade. Also you see other teams pull off midseason trades. Why not us? As for coaches, Lalonde needs to go. If Yzerman would sign him to another contract as was done with Blashill, Yzerman would need to go.
Yzerman has done fine in drafting but in Free Agency and pro roster construction he’s been awful. Beside Danielson and Cossa who’s ready to come up? We’re gonna be bad for the next 4 years unless they’re willing to shake things up.

If there was no draft lottery, I'd agree that Stevie was trying to drown the Wings. And, I believe that any GM that shoots for last place to rebuild 8 years into a rebuild, is not worthy. Millions of dollars in fan purchases will be lost. Fans will be lost. Especially the younger kids who are starting to pick out their heroes and teams, no kid with a brain will pick a losing team for 10 years, and not many kids will idolize Dylan Larkin if he doesn't go to a team that gives him a shot at a StanleyCup. Kids want Gordie Howes and Bobby Orrs and Ovetchkins and Makars. They want to cheer on winners. They don't want to get beat up for wearing a Uwe Krupp sweater. Unless the kid is a manic-depressive and like to see people lose, again and again. Fire Lalonde. Montreal 4, Detroit 1.
Dude that wallman trade broke my heart....wtf And yet we still have to deal with chiarot petry gustavsson and holl 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️ someone wake me from this nightmare
If this team tanks again, it'll be hard to get free agents to sign here. I wouldn't want to come to a losing team. Most players want to play for the cup.
I got so sick and tired of hearing what a genius Yzerman is that I started to root against him and the Red Wings. Now that it is clear that he's not a genius I hope Detroit fires him...he should start elsewhere without the genius tag and he'll probably be a very good GM. It is a very difficult job to turn any team into a Cup contender. I would say you have to be smart and very lucky. Don't agree with your assumption because none of those top draft picks have turned their teams around. One draft does not make a Stanley Cup contender. It takes many good drafts with a few high end picks, good free agent signings and smart trades and then maybe the team is good enough to compete for the Cup.
No knock on yzerman BUT he never would have won anything without Bowman and getting EVERY free agent to support the wings, plus having the best 2 way player in the league didn't hurt.
I would love to have Yzerman (….I guess we can call him “Ghost 2”) go to a microphone and EXPLAIN his logic regarding the Walman giveaway! NOBODY even questions it in this town! It’s like our beat writers don’t want to lose out on the free buffet so they don’t ask the tough questions. Detroit sportswriters are non-existent. How much heat would Stevie be under if he was in Philly or Boston? He couldn’t hide in the shadows--“Stevie the Groundhog” only comes out once a year and it’s for a patsy interview on draft night. What a FRIGGIN disaster of a GM!
This is the first offseason where Yzerman didn’t improve the team. That certainly shouldn’t be glossed over, but people calling for his job need to take a breath. Obviously he deserves some heat, but a gms job is to improve the team, not throw seasons away hoping for a good bounce of a lottery ball
FYI if Chris would give Steve the money to sign the players he wants to they would be doing alot better. Chris is doing the same thing with the wings as the tigers. Let the kids grow. Stop blaming Steve blame ownership.
@@Grasser88Stevie's in sort of a no-win situation. He gets screwed in the lottery (draft order) every time. Good vets won't sign here, and mediocre vets can demand more money to come here, knowing their gonna be on a losing team. The only one I have a problem with is Holl, everybody knew he was a joke. Compfer, Copp... we're decent and coming off playoff seasons with good teams... And the Walman thing, I don't know what happened there but the way it was handled seems ridiculous.
My thanks to Steve Yzerman. This was my attempt for the second straight year to support the Wings. I won't watch a loser. Thanks, Steve, you've turned me into a Pistons fan.
Really? Finish terribly and we might get a lottery draft pick? Have these people forgotten 2020 already? Detroit has the distinction of being the only team to ever finish last in the season and still lose the #1 overall draft pick to a Playoff team! We have literally never won any lottery pick! I guess that the law of averages says that we would have to win one eventually, but at the rate things are going, most of us discussing it today won't live long enough to see that day. And yes, I do give Yzerman a lot more leeway than I would give anyone else. I remember the people saying that we should trade him as a player, because he clearly wasn't getting the job done. The guy could never win the big one, until he did after 14 seasons, and then did he ever! He tested our patience, and then rewarded it, and I am confident that he is doing so again.
They should have traded their (2) first round draft picks a couple of years ago, with a couple of draft picks added for a good second line center in the top (5) picks.
Hindsight is 20/20, there’s no guarantee that the players who are drafted will be great players in the NHL, but he needed veteran players who won the cup to show the young players what it takes to have a winning mentality. If you keep the tanking mentality, then players will walk away after three years because they don’t want to play for a team that tanks for drafts every year, especially when the draft lotto has been the worst luck for the team.
Hindsight is 20/20. If everyone had known that Bedard, and Michkov, etc. would've been in that draft, then 30 out of 32 teams would've wanted to have tanked. You do what you gotta do to get out of a rut you're in at the time.
That doesn't make any sense. The draft is not some mystery. Every GM was well aware of who Bedard for years. No matter how much you tanked though can't beat rigging
The Habs are even worse, the HAD MICHKOV and the chose a second pairing defenseman with bad knees. Now they signed Laine (who will be gone in 18 months) and will miss out on the top talent in the next year's draft. Move over Izerman, Kent Hughes is even more incompetent.
that was a laugh. Who needs Michikov (who wanted to play in philly btw) we have demidov. Laine leaving in 18 months you try to make it out as a bad thing, but only you seem to think that he was some long term thing. Laine was a safe gamble to see if he could revive his career. If he does and doesn't want to stay long term he will be traded before his contract is up, but until then he helps the Habs while other players are still growing. The fact you are still looking for the habs to be in the Mckenna running shows your mind set in the first place.
Whining about not being in the draft lottery for bedard is such a bad take. People dont ununderstand how much worse they needed to be to be at the bottom with Chicago and Anaheim. Would have had to trade larkin and raymond to be bad enough and that would be a terrible idea. It sucks, but the reality is, detroit was no longer a bottom feeder by 22-23.
Unfortunately, all of that is true. Even if they didn't get Kubalik (provided 20 G), and Chiarot it would've made all the difference...they would've been right close to the bottom in the standings...which is where they should have been at that point in a rebuild.
While I agree with the premise of this video. And even if we got someone like Mitchov or Bedard or whatever, who's to say they wouldn't be just playing for the Griffon's or elsewhere? This team has a bad habit of letting guys "over rippen" or whatever, it's horrible. And yes, Lelonde needs to go.
They are an absolute embarrassment to the city of Detroit, honestly. They should all be fired and Illitch needs to sell the damm team, he is the worst owner in all of sports.
Anyone with half a brain new it was going to be 7 to 8 years at least never picking higher than 4th. teams with numerous top 3 picks are still struggling to make playoffs if at all. They over achieved last year. They have a very deep prospect pool. they will be fine and we will be laughing later. Yeah sucks watching now, but the worst thing yzerman could do is send away all his picks like buffalo.

Montreal 4, Detroit 1.
looks at young Buffalo fans
Scott Laughton got 2 empty net goals bud don’t glaze him too much
So what don’t see anyone else in the nhl getting 4 goals this year
Stats are stats, more like hitting the cycle in baseball. A quirky thing happened.
Yzerman is way overrated as a GM. If you ain't winning and making the playoffs by now, you ain't doing a good job.
6 seasons into a rebuild and yzerman built a lottery team lol
btw walman has 22 points in 27 games but was given away with a pick for nothing 😂
Dude that wallman trade broke my heart....wtf
And yet we still have to deal with chiarot petry gustavsson and holl 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️ someone wake me from this nightmare
@@wildbill3332 yeah it was pretty brutal lol
If this team tanks again, it'll be hard to get free agents to sign here. I wouldn't want to come to a losing team. Most players want to play for the cup.
We're at the point where the plan is less about free agents, and more about getting our prospects into a Wings sweater.
Look at all the players steve overpaid in his tenure fym if he was allowed to spend money 😂
Compher 5.1M, copp 5.6M, tarasenko 4.75M, chairot 4.75M, holl 3.4M, husso 4.75M. That’s almost 30 million of wasted cap space
Stevie spent his way up to the cap, I don't see how this is a $$ problem. To me it looks more like a problem with the "pro scouting" department...
@@kawboy1444i don't like the draft thing. His "bad luck" in the draft landed him Raymond over Lafreniere and Seider at 6.
I would agree the summer 22 free agency was a bad decision on when to hit the gas and the contracts we still have are horrible. Too late now
Yeah i think a lot of teams are going to regret passing on Michkov.
I need Christian Fischer off my hockey team too
Hindsight is 20/20.
Jusy bring up danielson and MBN already!
DETROIT HAS 2 LOOSING FACTORS ]..1 ] STEVEYZERMAN 2 ] NEWSY LALONDE
Red Wings just need one more year to rebuild
😂😂😂 if only
While I agree with the premise of this video. And even if we got someone like Mitchov or Bedard or whatever, who's to say they wouldn't be just playing for the Griffon's or elsewhere? This team has a bad habit of letting guys "over rippen" or whatever, it's horrible. And yes, Lelonde needs to go.
How is that Yzerplan working out?
Um we got dainelson and asp I'm very happy we did very well
They are an absolute embarrassment to the city of Detroit, honestly. They should all be fired and Illitch needs to sell the damm team, he is the worst owner in all of sports.
Readings are to small!
DETROIT HAVE DRAFTED VERY POORLY AND YZERMAN MAKES TERRILE MISTAKES WALLMAMAN KEEPING HOLL PURE CRAP
Fantastic player. Awful GM.
