- This video shows an NS local crew getting ready for their days work at Spartanburg's Hayne Yard. Watch as the local crew starts up their 2 Southern engines, a GP30 and B30-7A1. Then they head off into the yard to pick up their train. A few shots of some of the cars in the yard are included. Then, the next shot shows the local freight running by the Amtrak station headed back to Hayne Yard after finishing their assigned work.

@truck893 Yep, time sure does fly! Can't believe it's been over 20 years since I shot this footage. Thanks for watching & commenting!
Thanks for sharing this.
Sad to see the remaining high hoods getting cut up and that admiral cab being scabbed on.
I know it makes sense and NS is a business but it doesn't change the fact that I would get a thrill every time I saw one of the old high hoods working. Most of them even still were lettered SOU in smaller letters under the window letting me know where they came from.
Nearest I can tell the crews hated the high hoods and are glad to see them go.
I will miss them.
@MrCzechers Yep, I sure do miss the Southern too.
The coolest looking GE locos ever along with the P-30' aka old POOCH engines for amtrak!...
I love the old hi hoods never thought when I was a kid id ever go a day with out seing one now if your lucky you might see one a year headed to be scrapped thanks for sharing
Nice video of SR rolling stock. My late Grandfather retired from SR with 30 years as a switch man out of Norris Yard in Birmingham.
SOUTHERN SERVES THE SOUTH!
Hmm yes, floor is made of floor
Southern Railway ran high hoods so they could draw a head from either end. This is what my father told me, he was a SR trainman, started working in 1948.
did anyone else check out that little old 40 foot southern gondola... one would think a really hard run in of cupler slack and it might buckle right up
railroad mergers should have been illegal! Thanks for sharing, great video!
I miss the old Southern Railway.
@MrCzechers I think we all miss the road that serves the south.
The B30-7A1 looks kinda wierd with the high hood up front
That Southern B30-7A reminds me of how blessed I was to have found a Brass Model for it, as there aren't any remaining.
Very nice film. I'm glad I stumbled upon this.
Thanks for posting. I too, am a big SR fan and live in Spartanburg. That's some really nice footage!
Awesome! Nothing like those tuxedos!
this video is awesome! Ive watched it so many times,I miss the southern and those highhood G.E.s!
***** actually the reason the SOU ordered high hoods was this. On most SOU locomotives, the long hood is the front and the short hood is the rear, however On the gp30s, the ge's, and a few others, the short hood is the front. SOU did that for added crew protection in case of a collision with a vehicle. Thus, almost all the SOU locomotives have high short hoods and run long hood forward.
Also on this video footage with the old Southern Railroad, that car was an AMC that was waiting at the crossing. After the Southern Engine has passed on by.
I have watched this so many times, so I subbed, reminds me of my childhood.awesome!
awesome video, good to see some of the older equipment still in use
GREAT VIDEO.REALLY ENJOYED IT.I MODEL THE 1970'S SOUTHERN RAILWAY AND THIS IS PRETTY CLOSE TO PERFECT.THANKS FOR POSTING IT.
One thing that I missed out was when Southern Railway provided passenger serivce. Sadly, it was discontinued 12 years before I was born.
Southern tuxedos. Beautiful
This is awesome footage of the Southern!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
@NVRambo You saw some good classic stuff! Glad you like my old stuff!
LOL! Yeah, at least we're still kickin' though!
Cool! I didn't even think about that being one of those units.
Great video man! Great to see the classics!
Damn I miss the Southern......
@NVRambo Glad you liked the video. I miss the Southern Railway also! Thanks for watching and commenting!
@DJGENEX71
Not all of them are scrapped. The GA Central railway has a sizeable fleet. While they were not aesthetically pleasing, I love them because they are so unique!
I never had the chance to ride a passenger train. I also missed the red bay window caboose that Southern had.
@K4JW Thanks! I'm glad you are enjoying the video!
this is really a great and unique video! where else would you see a high hood geep 30 and a high hood u boat together?
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
@K4JW Thanks for watching and the nice comment! I miss the Southern too!
@beatleman69 Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! Yes, it's too bad that the Southern disappeared into NS.
Respond to this video... Too bad its hard to find southern power now days.
@srrailwayfan Glad you liked it, Brian! Thanks!
@gaycowboy31 Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, those mega-mergers in the 80's did away with a lot of great paint schemes. Thanks for watching & commenting!
@pwalpar Thanks, Walter!
Very nice!
Back when getting on and off moving equipment was legal and the norm.
@rufec12 Glad you liked it! Thanks!
those tracks where these locomotives belonged to the defunct N&W, oh they were owned by the former Southern Railroad
Former Southern Railway
2636 is unique in that it was rebuilt with a GP35 long hood section after a wreck.
@NSLocomotiveFan Thank you for watching & commenting!!
I love the EMD high hoods, but those old GE's just look like a shoebox with a cab on them...lol. Maybe good for a battering ram, but looks ugly! Oh wait, they're all scrapped now, so it might actually be a battering ram now! LOL!!! Still love the classic footage my friend! Keep them coming! I wish you guys would paint a heritage unit or 3-4 in the black tux like these... :)
@WhistlepostWP Thanks!
so your saying that when the cab needed to be rebuilt it would be in the scheme that it had.
lol look at that old-ass gon with the friction bearings, you'll never see anything like that anymore
When was this Video taken? The Two Engines in Southern Paint
nice video!
dumb question, lol but what does the "A1" in b-30-7A1?
The B30-7A1 was purchased only by Southern Railway and used a 7FDL12 prime mover and turbocharger to achieve 3,000 hp; unlike the B30-7 which used 7FDL16 prime mover to generate 3,000 hp . The 22 B30-7A1's had relocated blower equipment from the radiator section the the cab end of the hood. This was done to accomadate the Southern's request for more powerful dynamic brakes.
@@SOU5111 what do the letters after the cab number mean on Southern units??
@@onrr1726 That is the old "computer check code" letter. Early in the computer era, Southern came up with the letter after the number in locomotives to designate the difference from freight cars with similar numbers.
alright love your thinkin Maybe I'll paint my fleet of locomotives in the Tux.
@DJGENEX71 actually they're all in Brazil :/
oh yea forgot about that. That would be cool. but what about rebuilds?
@tchnofile Thanks, Ben!
@DJGENEX71 Thanks, Gene! Yeah, I wish they would paint some Southern (black) tuxedo units too!
@southern4501isawesom Unfortunately, deregulation caused the merger of this railroad and csx.
What was the number on the gp30?
3520!
did southern ever have a low hood?
boatx22 yes the GP59’s
@belzelga2 Yeah, it sure is too bad!
Who’s seen no 4104 in skunk paint
@benschlechter Southern merged with Norfolk & Western. CSX = Seaboard System, Chessie, and before that SCL/L&N Family lines...
then that would be one messed up NW & Sou paint scheme
Why do all of Southern's units have high nose hoods?
Roll over protection, collision protection, union required it.
southern railway serves the south ... i wish n&w and southern would have stayed seprate norfolk southern is nice dont get me wrong but ... id rather see high hoods painted nice green white and gold then black and white norfolk southern has no traces of southern in them besides southern 630 and 4501 ....
1989.
Why did they insist on the unnecessary high hood? It wouldn't have done much other than reduce visibility for the driver.
GE should have used EMD prime movers!
