Had this lost somewhere in the middle of my "watch later" list. Came across it a bit ago, and watched. Remarkable soul. And a great doc, Juls. Thank you!
Curt, you truly are becoming the completist follower when it comes to my content - and it is SO appreciated! First long form film I ever made and I am very proud of it. Pieter-Dirk is one of my all time heroes and it was an honor to document his incredible work and life. I am glad you enjoyed it! x
Julian, I would like to thank you for your amazing documentary. I am in Perth Western Australia and originally from Johannesburg. you are an inspiration.
Inspiring, enlightening and moving. I did not know this side of South Africa, and I had only a passing knowledge of Pieter-Dirk Uys, thank you for sharing his life and insights.
DaL33T5 That's the first thing I too thought of when those words were being said! And all those refugees being deported back to countries where their lives were at risk, who were later murdered... "genocide" is the perfect word for that too.
An excellent film; I can’t believe you were in your late teens, Julian! And may I just add a reflection that although I’m gay, I would say I’ve lived a largely conventional life (by choice)…but I’ve long held a view that it’s people like Pieter - those who are a bit quirky or outré or happy to challenge convention - it is they that make the world an interesting place. And how utterly wonderful too that a young, straight, football-loving Aussie/Kiwi bloke in his teens might choose someone like him to be his first documentary subject! What a joyous discovery your TH-cam channel has been for a wintery Melbourne weekend. Best wishes from Vic (where, just FYI, we play the best code of footy 😉)
This really makes my day - I am so happy you discovered the film on TH-cam. Pieter-Dirk is a true hero and I completely agree that it is the iconoclasts and outliers (who are usually subject to intense criticism from society) that actually change the world and make it a better place. I saw him perform at the Sydney Opera House when I was 15 and knew right away I had to make a film about him. Hope you enjoy the rest of the content here! x
And as for the footy… I have endless admiration for the AFL and it’s athletes even if my personal preferences are for New Zealand Rugby Union and American Football!
@JulianShawofficial I think a lot of the critics are very frightened people whose position is questioned they want to hold onto power such as women knowing there place gays persucted they invoke god etc Adam and eve not Adam and Steve etc but there's plenty of children in heterosexual families abused tortured and killed like that poor Polish boy tortured starved to death monsters this so called normality is a pile of crap what is normal anyway I'm glad there people like pieter and when.dusty Springfield 60s icon and gay came to south Africa she refused to play to segregated audiences and was deported along with people like Mandela and Desmond tutu love him there is hope and you yourself, wasn't aware you were so young, that gives me more hope tot siens broer/see you around brother
Thankfully, after Mbeki was overthrown and Mantu died, antiretrovirals are now largely available and I have many loved ones still alive because they are on them (which the others weren't). To put it in perspective: 39% of my province (KwaZulu-Natal) is HIV-positive...
jeremy dickens Wow, I have a very dear friend of mine who's originally from that province (she's the one who told me about Mr. Uys in the first place). She's said she knows of at least a handful of her classmates who have since died, and she's not that old at all. It's sobering stuff.
missed out, express my compliments to your work!!! have been taking great interest in the art and development of pieter-dirk uys, since his first performance, at the market theatre. i'm very glad, that i have been able to put my respect into words, as i met him briefly earlier this year. kind regards from germany richard

In light of the mayor of San Juan's remarks, and the general situation in Puerto Rico post-Maria, this is painfully relevant.

A Wonderfull man, he is truly one who stood ands with his beliefs. ♥
What an amazing man, and visceral, challenging documentary.

Absolutely amazing documentary about an amazing man.
Thank you! Pieter is a legend. I am so glad you enjoyed the film. Sadly much of it is just as relevant today as when we made it.
Great Film! Learned a lot!
