Let's not talk about Ai WeiWei for the time being. I don't know why but I feel like the western democracy won't work in China, at least not at the moment. A strong administration is necessary to keep the people together. Without the tight regulation, I don't really think China would grow so fast. Look at Philippines, India or any other Latino and South-Asian countries except Singapore (which is basically built by Britain). In fact, in the development of most countries, being regulated under a dictatorship is an important phase which they can't be skipped. Without "the Great Fire Wall of China", which provides an isolated internet environment, China won't have companies like Tencent , Alibaba or Baidu (they could've got beaten by their American counterparts very easily) which are now world-leading high-tech companies and have contributed a lot to the Chinese economy. These huge companies have lifted millions out of poverty. I reckon the so-called democracy and arts are still too pricey to an average Chinese (if you look at the GDP per capita, even in cities like Beijing or Shanghai, it is not comparable with any developed Western economies. Chinese are poorer than people in most of their neighbour countries, yet China has more influence on the world economy than any of its neighbours). I mean, there are many problems in China, especially in the humanity and culture side. But I think it is a problem in economy, if you look at the education in China, it never teaches the Chinese students to live their own life, and it is because China doesn't have that much educational resource, and it doesn't provide a well-rounded welfare system, which makes the majority of Chinese kids don't have the courage to live up their dreams. After all, China is a low-income developing country, you don't expect China to become a developed country overnight. BTW, I have lived in Australia for 5 years now (I saw you uploaded lots of vid about Adelaide, so I assume you live here too). I maybe like the fresh air and the polite people, but I have never felt like I get more freedom over here than I did in China (prob b/c I studied a CS major, and I am not an artist). Instead, I have seen plenty of side-effects that come with the western democracy. If you look at the US election, you know the voters are strongly influenced by the media, and the media is controlled by the political parties. Basically what you read on the news could well be just a story made up by the political parties. It means you maybe not voting for what you think you are voting for. So here comes to my conclusion: there is no such thing as "complete democracy" for ordinary folks. Two parties may be better because they can kind of balance off the power, but I don't think it really helps to create a democratic society more than a growing economy does (if you compare Macau and Hongkong, it becomes very obvious). One thing I agree with you tho, this generation needs to be better than the elder one. Also, I am planning on going back to China coz I think the project of XiongAn New Area is very exciting. I think if we build a stronger economy and make the average Chinese income doubled in the next few years, so everyone earns more regardless of profession, gender, and other stuff, a lot of problems will just go away naturally. (BTW, every living man is suffering from a lot of things, not just the Chinese. You are in Australia, so you know it. Australia may be better in something, but it may be worse in some other things, if you think Australia is better than China overall, well that's because it is a developed country and ppl here earns an average nearly 10 times what an average Chinese earns)

According to my friend, the subtitles are not accurate. 3:25 what the girl said was "you are not that tall", not "you are not that special" thus her comment "you are quite ordinary" is about his height. 26:54 this documentary added "the government controls the press" in the subtitle. That is not what that guy said in the interview. So far those are the mistakes she pointed out.
I think China being such a big country, it is very hard to manage, I understand the government's position after the earthquake, they are trying to keep the people calm and not make a mess, because the more mess there are the less people they can save… I think Ai weiwei is a great artist but there are other way of changing the face of China instead of always criticizing its wrong… China has beautiful things too. I love my birth country and Im happy to see it getting better days and days(people gets out of poverty and etc.) make peace not war:))

what is most extraordinary about him, more often than not, is unfortunately the enormity of his projects in terms of the number of people engaged to carry it out his works and the amount of money needed to materialize them. In many ways his works are of the same type, in terms of publicity, media attention and ambition same as Christo's. It would be equally interesting for him to exhibit the list of people collaborating in his project, where and how they were produced and how much money was involved in doing so. This is all the more interesting in so far as conceptual art is concerned, that his activism in human rights will translate into what Chinese cheap labour and thereof economic power represent in our world today. After all, the accumulation of objects added to this world, no thanks to the Chinese market, are by far the most threatening not only to the whole idea of art and aesthetics, but also to the environment.
