- Kyle Dubas swung a huge deal on Thursday, bringing highly-touted prospect Rutger McGroarty to Pittsburgh. Hunter and Patrick discuss how this trade came to be and whether they were both stunned that Brayden Yager was included in the deal. I absolutely love this deal. Rutger McGroarty has been a player I watched at Michigan and even last year in the World Juniors for Team USA. I hate to see Yager go, but I am stoked about McGroarty coming here. We know have a player that the team can build around after the Big Three moves on.
What I like, its a good old fashioned hockey trade that I think both teams will benefit from.

I remember seeing mock drafts back in 22, and McGroarty and Jimmy Snuggerud were two players that were potential Pens projected picks. Here we are two years later.

They did a really good job in getting what they could for Rutger. I’m also excited to see how does up there.
GREAT trade for both teams.
McGroarty is a leader. He's tough, he's a playmaker, and he has solid hands. He's the type of complete forward that one day becomes a team Captain. Throw him on Sid's line with Rusty, and maximize his growth. Yager has too many questions marks to go with his obvious skill-set. Pittsburgh won this deal.
As a Jets fan, it think it's a win-win. I think Rutger might be the better player, but with Yager being from Saskatchewan hopefully he'll be interested in staying long term.
Yager is a solid player. He’s got some holes in his game yet but hes shown a lot of potential to be great and maybe reach a 1st line center role if he can curve those issues. More so he’s for an incredible attitude and is very humble. He reminded me a lot of Sid to be honest. You guys in my opinion got not only the best return you could have given your situation with Rutger but a guy who will bring a lot of pride and passion to your team. I’m honestly gonna miss Yager and when I first learned the rumor about the trade I was willing to pay anything short of the core or Yager. So was kinda bummed to see him go but Rutger was the ideal prospect for us in our situation right now
I think it's a smart move for sure. I liked Yager but by all accounts McGroarty is a little better and NHL ready, as opposed to Yager who was gonna need a few years. McGroarty-Sid-Rust, Bunting-Malkin-Rakell, O'Connor-Hayes-Glass, Lizotte-Eller-Acciari, and then there's Puljujarvi, Puustinen, and Beauvillier. Honestly I don't hate that lineup, McGroarty potentially fills a massive hole. Dubas might be onto something. I think the 2023 offseason when he was first hired he was just scrambling and had some misses, but he's starting to figure it out think.
I've watched alot of Yager videos on youtube and he is excellent in the highlights. Yager was my hope. FUTURE DANGER WARNING! When Sid and Geno retire who are going to be Rutger McGroarty's centers? That is when he will demand a trade from a rebuilding basement cellar team with no hope. That is when the Pens will need a new center like Yager who is perfectly timed and was on track to enter the organization when 87/71 retire. Let's watch and see. Hopefully RM rips it up for the Pens.
That's what I've been thinking too. McGroarty doesn't strike me as the personality type to stay with a team through a rebuild unless we massively overpay him. Yager seems to be more mature and I feel like he would be more grateful of the opportunity to play for an nhl team and make a name for himself.

I love the trade
Not sure what to think of the trade. Ive watched tape of both players. Mcgroarty is bigger, grittier and better playmaker. He's closer to being nhl ready too. But that yager wrist shot is deadly. Yager has the better shot of the 2 right now. We'll see in 3 to 5 years who wins this trade but am excited to see mcgroarty in a pens sweater. Will miss yager and hope for the best for him in his career except when he plays pens. I think eller will be traded. Possibly acciari too. Dubas wants to get younger and they are 2 of many over 30's on this team. Hunter, i think puustinen will be odd man out or 13 forward. I see cody glass or anthony beauvillier in 3rd line right wing role with mcgroarty starting the season on the left wing with hayes centering it. Maybe im wrong but i got a feeling on it. Then the other of beauvillier or glass on 4th line with lizotte and acciari if they dont trade him. Puustinen is not a 4th liner. Known for his shot and 4th line role wouldnt help his development imo.
I don't know prospects well enough to assess this. But I will say that I love the ambition.
It’s a hell of a swing, to put it lightly. But I’m super stoked to see what he can do.

If they don't intend to plug him in on the first or second line, they just made an even bigger log jam in their bottom six. So i hope he can be ready to be in the top six, even though i don't think he's even played an NHL game yet.
He hasn’t played a game in the NHL yet but that will change this year.

Poulin is yesterday's news... I think he's shown he's never going to be anything more than a 4th liner 13th F in the NHL.... now Vasily Ponaromev and Ville Koivunen, Cruz Lucius + the other guys you mentioned are the future

Our point was that Winnipeg did a great job as well in the deal to get someone like Yager back despite being in a really tough situation. They still did fairly well

One thing to consider: Yager was not going to get better by returning to the WHL as an over-ager. 20 year olds playing against 16 year olds tend to plateau, and then they stumble at the next step. The NCAA does a much better job of developing players for the NHL.
Agreed but it's dumb agreement the NHL has with the CHL. A player that age would better develop in the AHL. Case in point with the Toronto Maple Leafs. William Nylander was drafted out of Swedish Elite League and played a season in the AHL. With Mitch Marner who was drafted out of the OHL. It was go back to junior or play in the NHL.
@@wizzerwiser2056 Earlier this Summer, prior to the trade, I had suggested that Yager should look for a contract in Europe rather than play his age 20 season in the WHL.
I think any medium to high-end prospect should do that if they're barred from the American League.
@@gablefisk-govphost817 Auston Mathews played in the Swiss league prior to his draft year. So that would be a good idea but Mathews like Nylander wasn't CHL property prior to their draft year so not sure if there's a loophole for CHL players.

I think the top 6 is set. I don’t think O’Connor starts the year anywhere other than the first line. I see Rutger on the third line with Eller and either Ant, Pustinen, or Acari.

He couldn't make these trade with his former team because he created cap hell and traded and pissed away draft picks and prospects. That's why they didn't give him full power because he proved he couldn't handle it.

Did you look at the pens prospects? They have no center depth in the pipeline. The season Malkin and Crosby are done, the pens will have nothing down the middle. As a pens fan I want to see McGroarty succeed, but man the pens should’ve tired to ship Pickering over Yager.
I’m sure they tried to ship Pickering instead of Yager but sometimes, you have to give to get. FWIW, I think Yager is more of a winger than a center but that’s just me

We’re talking about a prospect, no NHL games yet, bumping DOC down a line. Come on. DOC scored 16 goals last season and should be even better this year. I don’t get that at all. This kids gonna play in the NHL and probably score less than 10 goals his first season. I dislike the trade, but I hope it works out in the long run.

Unless he has a crappy camp, I expect him to be on the first line with Sid and Rusty. Barring that, he'll be on the second line with Geno and Bunting, moving Rakell to Sid's line. DOC will be a bottom six player, this year.

Just saw that Thatcher Demko may miss a good bit of the season, for Vancouver, because his knee isn't healing as expected. Could we see Rutherford call up his favorite trading partner, the Pens, for a player that he drafted...Tristan Jarry?

Baring a trade, the locks for the bottom 6 are Hayes, Glass, Acciari, Eller and Lizotte. Those 5 simply make too much to not have a spot. You can’t waive them because they would add dead money on the cap, and Hayes, Acciari and Lizotte would add dead money through 2026.
I think one of, if not both of Eller or Acciari get moved before the season IMO. Something’s gonna have to give there
@@LockedOnPenguins I imagine that Dubas prefers to trade Acciari, but that he will settle for trading Eller ... since a) Eller is coming off a much better season and b) Eller only has one year left on his contract. But it does seem like something has to give in the bottom 6, especially if they want to at least give a Ponamarov or a Poulin a chance to make the roster.

McGroarty came in and said all the right things in winnipeg. Then mysteriously said he wouldn’t sign without any real explanation. I hope it works out but I can see him saying in a couple of years into a rebuild ‘yeah, I am not really feeling it here anymore’
