  • Wow!! What a feeling to hear it fire up for the first time. A huge relief.
When I first checked the compression, the engine hadn't run in years and #3 cylinder showed low compression (about 60psi). After this video was finished, I rechecked the compression and all cylinders are showing 150psi (165 static at sea level so this is expected since I'm at 5000' DA).
It runs, there's oil pressure and most of the major systems (cooling, electrical, fuel, etc) seem to be working. Obviously, the carbs have not been properly synchronized and the engine is definitely missing somewhere.
(EDIT: 9/9/23 Turns out the starting circuits (starter jet and start path) for carbs 1 & 2 were still blocked even after an hour in the ultrasonic cleaner. I removed the carbs and cleaned them again paying particular attention to the start jet and the brass start tube. New parts are on order for the detailed carb rebuild later. After reinstalling the carbs again, the bike fired right up and ran very smooth. I synchronized the carbs and got the idle set. I'll post new videos soon).
Getting to this stage will allow me to continue with the general servicing of the bike so that I tear it apart, I'll know what needs the most attention.
I may not show it in the video, but I'm pretty happy with this!

I was gojng to say it was running on 3 cylinders. Those engines are noisy when it is unbalanced like that when down a cylinder. I bet it will be something simple. Then it will sound like a sewing machine. Awesome job though!!! 👍

You’re absolutely right. There is something missing and I’m sure it’s minor. I haven’t had the time to dig into it but I will once I’m back from work. Cheers!!

Man, you have good ears...to notice that on a video taken with an iPhone. I bought a laser thermometer and two cylinders are not firing properly. There's a little combustion but cylinders 3 & 4 are driving the show, 1 & 2 are barely doing anything. Turns out that even after spending an hour in the ultrasonic cleaner, the start jets and the start nozzle/path were all blocked up. Ordered new jets and spent some more time with the compressor after taking the carbs off again. This time around is just to get it running so I'll have to really do a better job with the carbs. Once I get it all sorted out, I'll make another video of the engine running properly along with a carb sync.

    Very good Kens
It's like an orchestra listening to the roar of this engine fluctuate between high and low.

Yes it is. It sounds amazing. The carbs still need to be synched and the valves lapped and set but I think the bottom end is sound.

I stumbled on this as I am doing much the same with a tired old EXUP1000RU I found. It was running but starting was difficult and a idle non existent. Decided to pull the carbs out and they were manky so all new jets and needles and a thorough clean, I am hopeful will solve the majority of issues. Did notice it was a wee bit clattery from the top end when it was running too and I reckon valves need done so going to look at them before I re-install the carbs as its such a pain to do. ( also found a broken suppressor cap so need to replace that too). Hopefully in the next few weeks will be in the same spot of nervous anticipation getting it ready for its first fire up since the carbs were done.

Awesome! Good to see another one is being raised from the dead. Good luck with everything…I’m going slow at it right now since I’m doing bike stuff between work which is 3 week intervals. I should be doing all my engine work, mostly top end stuff, by July/August timeframe. Videos shortly after.

@@KensWorldRestorations I had a first gen 1000 Genesis back in the day. Saved so hard to get it and utterly loved it, but was stolen some months after. Still love it's looks. The EXUP came up locally and was nearest I could get relatively cheaply and easily. It is very tired though. So has to show itself worthy of saving first. Good luck.
