Nearer My God to Thee (Wallace Henry Hartley)

  • (Note: After over four years, I decided to do another video, this one in honor of a relative, a retired US Army Officer, who died of covid. You can find it at • Loss of a loved one. )
    The intent of this video was an experiment in finding audio visual means of teaching both American culture and American English (ESL) to recent immigrants and refugees in a Christian venue. This video contains a clip from the 1997 movie, TITANIC, starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio. I wanted to be able to discuss the hymn, Nearer My God to Thee so I included the vocal by Mary Duff (I think she's super good).
    Several visitors pointed out that the music to the hymn was probably not the music popular today. Lyrics were unchanged but "... probably Wallace played Horbury or Proprior Deo, both quite beautiful, too!" (comment by Rita balbino)
    Also I wrote that the Titanic sunk in about 4 hours but the actual time was about 2 hours and 40 minutes. The Titanic struck the iceberg just before midnight on 14 April.
    There is controversy over the music actually played by the band. There were no band survivors to tell the story.

    Think about it... They played this song as the ship was sinking, not trying to save themselves, instead trying to help keep people calm. Heroes come in many forms!

      In my opinion I don't believe it will stop people panicking. But I think it could serve as a way of attracting nearby ships as sound does travel fast.

    I had the chance to meet the great-grandson of Wallace Hartley, the violinist who played the song when the Titanic was about to sink. He came to a Jack Phillips exhibition about the Titanic in Godalming, Surrey. He said that in his great grandfather s honour the whole family continued to be a musician.

For as many as have sinned without law will also perish without law, and as many as have sinned in the law will be judged by the law (for not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified; for when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them) in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.”
      God judges all of us based upon the light we’ve been given! We all know God in our hearts… He made us! It’s in our DNA! He built that moral compass into us. He judges us based on how much we heed to that voice inside (HIM!) that we all have! I hope I answered your question well enough. God bless you my friend. I know it can be tempting to doubt God’s goodness, but seek Him with a diligent heart and you will see for yourself, He is a God of Love! Mercy! Patience! Long suffering! Kindness! We are wretched and filthy, deserving of nothing but death…but He loves us so much that He paid that price of death through Jesus Christ. Our great Redeemer! Praise be to God forever and ever!!!! What I like about this scene is how the victims reacted to their fate.
    The ship's orchestra, Isidor Strauss and his wife and the Irish mother know they will not be saved and have sadly accepted they will not the light of day again, rather than panic although deep down they are scared they are going to die.
    Both Smith and Andrews held responsibility over the ship sinking due to be captain and architecture respectively and felt it was only right to go down with the ship rather than save themselves.

    1. Nearer, my God, to thee,
    Nearer to thee!
    E’en though it be a cross
    That raiseth me.
    Still all my song shall be
    Nearer, my God, to thee,
    Nearer, my God, to thee,
    Nearer to thee!
    2. Though like the wanderer,
    The sun gone down,
    Darkness be over me,
    My rest a stone,
    Yet in my dreams I’d be
    Nearer, my God, to thee,
    Nearer, my God, to thee,
    Nearer to thee!
    3. There let the way appear,
    Steps unto heav’n;
    All that thou sendest me,
    In mercy giv’n;
    Angels to beckon me
    Nearer, my God, to thee,
    Nearer, my God, to thee,
    Nearer to thee!
    4. Then with my waking thoughts
    Bright with thy praise,
    Out of my stony griefs
    Bethel I’ll raise;
    So by my woes to be
    Nearer, my God, to thee,
    Nearer, my God, to thee,
    Nearer to thee!
    5. Or if, on joyful wing
    Cleaving the sky,
    Sun, moon, and stars forgot,
    Upward I fly,
    Still all my song shall be

The Bible also explains that God doesn’t typically get involved in things, and allows people to make their own decisions and mistakes that they’re responsible for. Many of said mistakes involve a lesson learned. The world learned from their various mistakes within the maritime community. If the Titanic didn’t sink, many maritime safety laws would be nonexistent today. The sinking of the Titanic is the reason ships must always have people on lookout, the reason radios must always have operators, the reason ships must always have enough lifeboats, and on and on. Considering how stupid and greedy humans can be at times, I’m doubtful as to whether or not these laws would’ve come to be without a massive tragedy. This tragedy could have repeated itself and been much, much worse.

      @tellerversestudios 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@meganslonesings God did not cause the sinking of the Titanic. Yes, they taunted God by saying what they did. But that does not mean God caused it. Ecclesiastes 9:11: "I have seen something further under the sun, that the swift do not always win the race, nor do the mighty win the battle, nor do the wise always have the food, nor do the intelligent always have the riches, nor do those with knowledge always have success, because time and unexpected events overtake them all."
      God does not cause suffering. Suffering is the cause of our own actions and/or the actions of others around us. God does not act the way we do. His anger is just and instant. It does not linger. He does not hold a grudge. The sinking affected thousands of people as well as their families who weren't on the Titanic who later learned that their family did not survive the sinking. Innocent children were seperated from their parents, or they died slow deaths, or they survived with injuries and PTSD. And that's just the children, there were indeed innocent women and men on the Titanic that even if they survived, still probably had nightmares for the rest of their lives. 99.9% of them all probably dealt with survivor's guilt as well. God does NOT cause suffering.

    Almost certainly [according to those who were there] the tune of "Nearer My God To Thee" played by the orchestra under Wallace Hartley's direction would have been 'Propior Deo' composed by Sir Arthur Sullivan for the Methodist Hymnal. This accounts for the fact that it was recognised as being a setting of "Nearer My God To Thee" by U.S. survivors who were used to the tune 'Bethany, - the first four notes of the first bar are similar to 'Bethany', but Sullivan's setting then goes on to much greater development.
