For us in Germany the S.U. always called Russland, that s normal.
It s like calling Nederlande Holland.
My mother was looking in DDR after the ambassy, and asking a east-german policeman "sorry where I can find the russish ambassy" and was shouted "there is no rushish ambassy, the ambassy of the sovjet union is over there"
We laugh about it since then.
