This is a magnificent marvel of a song. The video is sweet and sad and hopeful. Just discovered Lanterns on the Lake today and will share this with friends. The world needs music like this.
This song is, to me, deeply political recalling the days where England's Northern communities were devastated by Thatcher's dismantling of unions and driving business away from the North. You can see it evidenced in how many of the buildings are abandoned and there's little in the way of infrastructure development. The lyrics "they've been warned a thousand times this year" imply the Tory government giving the North many attempts to stop their strikes in the mines (and other sectors). "We don't want to fight we want the quiet life" refers to how the North never did anything to deserve the police response they often received for their strikes (again at the hand of Thatcher and the Tories); they just wanted to carry on with their lives working in the factories and mines up North. "Their not fit to breathe our air" is another cry from the South saying how "uncultured" the North is compared to the more metropolitan South. So yeah it's a beautiful song, but with an immensely sad message.
+Lance Haynes its almost like the dont want to stay in their country and be blown up because of their religion, but i suppose that's what the english do best
I'm from the south and I was chatting to a guy from Newcastle a year or so ago - he is retired and he has always voted Labour, he said. He told me there were more miners laid off, and more mines closed, in the 1970's when Labour were in power than in the 1980's under Thatcher. Trade union reform was something very necessary and many are glad she did it, after the unions brought Britain to its knees in the 1970's. In the late-70's hospitals were cancelling everything except emergencies, kids kept off school because there was no power or heating, and the country was 6 weeks away from food shortages in 1979 under James Callaghan's Labour government. The things Labour did in the 1970's kept them out of power for nearly 20 years subsequently, and they had to move their agenda to the centre-right to get elected even then. We have never had a left-wing government since 1979, that's 41 years, and Britain would never want one again. The Labour party in 2019 was left-wing again and received their worst result in 70 or 80 years at the ballot box last year.
Seeing them live was a truly beautiful experience I recall with great affection. They were great in London, a couple of years ago, opening for Explosions in the Sky.
Pretty views of the English countryside . I hadn't heard muchof LOTL , but Bella Union usually signs in people who deliver quite well . Can't wait til their album comes out ...
Read Pitchfork's review. Not sure if they have people on the staff who listen to music. So self-flattering and arrogant are they that they cannot enjoy something good. This is good and I place it next to The Joy Formidable. Almost a seamless progression between the two and that is a great thing.
Really great tune. Really wondeful sad song. But, on the other hand, really boring and a no original video. It is a shame, because this song deserves somethnig more creative and evocative...
I got to knew lanterns on the lake by playing Life is Strange, what a wonderful band, their tracks are magical to my mood.
I love this. It is so haunting, heartbreaking yet beyond beautiful
