    In answering the question "how often should you change paddles because of loss of grit" why don't you use the "grit meter" to quantify how fast the grit deteriorates. I imagine that for a high quality carbon fiber face paddle that the grit might be sustained for years. That would be an important parameter to know for consumers to know.

    On the topic of when to replace paddles, have you guys considered a top 5 list of most durable paddles? Spin, core, and edge guard

    • @alwaysplaythegame
      @alwaysplaythegame 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Pretty simple in my opinion.
      Durability tier list:
      S: old gearbox solid span paddles
      A-D: Everything else. Kevlar doesn't last as well as T700 but is better than spray on grit imo. Edgeless is far worse for durability (more impactful than face material imo). Thermoforming makes dead spots moreso than non-thermoformed paddles, but Gen 1 paddles are more likely to develop handle issues - maybe a wash?

    You talk about the spin and core crush to know when to replace a paddle. What about sweet spot. I’ve been playing with the Mach 2 Forza for 8 months 5 days a week. Spin is still there but it feels the sweet spot/ twist weight is just getting worse. Paddle is still in tact no edge guard coming off. Have you known anyone to replace a paddle because of the sweet spot/ twist weight getting worse besides the edge guard coming off?

    Great timing! I returned Gen 3 after the ban then got Bantam TKO-CX. I feel like it's losing spin after 4 months of 3-4x a week hard play. Otherwise, it's super durable, but I can tell I'm losing spin and it's making me adjust my shots and lose a little confidence, especially on hard topspin drives. Looking at the Ripple next, want to go back to something with a bigger sweet spot but a lot of power and spin.

    Congrats on new court. Neighbors won’t think the clacking is bad compared to the leaf blowers getting the leaves off the court. 😛Hint: get at least one quiet leaf blower.
    I had a tennis friend that one day finally got his tennis court. Unfortunately he had some runoff issues when it rained. One day at the tennis club he said what he really liked about the club is they cleaned off the court and he just showed up and played. 😂 Looks like you have raised edges/drop off … should be good with no dirt getting on court.
    Now you need a shed to keep the ball machine in.

    I’ve been playing with the hurricane 14mm since March, so over 6 months, pretty sure it’s more power and less control oriented now that the spin is gone. It’s not delaminated but might pick up a skin to see if that help, but also guess I need a new paddle 😅

    Another reason to replace a paddle is when you outgrow your old paddle. For example sometimes I see beginner players with Walmart paddles and I would offer for them to try my carbon fiber paddle. Usually, if they play more than once a week, they will want to replace their Walmart paddles.

    Gen 3 is crazy power - Gearbox, Ripple. Joola, Paddle Tech, even Engage because the focus is on power not the foam
    Gen 2 thermoformed with or without foam but no extreme power since even the original G2's had foaming injected in the edges

    Yeah, we’ll have to revisit the prediction that Quang Duong will dominate pickleball at some point. Much has to change before that even gets close to being the case. Good luck with control and consistency when you use a western or even semi western grip and rely on constant speed ups and high spin shots to win. While it singles it seems to pay off, in doubles it hasn’t and won’t until the equipment significantly changes if it even gets there. This approach is self limiting.

    Pickleball needs to move towards longer lifespan paddles. Similar to how tennis, badminton, and other racquet sports are doing it. I don't my refreshing the face of the paddle, but not getting rid of all of it.

    • @michaelnoe1195
      @michaelnoe1195 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think you have to compare the two fairly as racquets have strings and while I've used the same tennis racquet(s) for many years I have to restring them on occasion. This isn't to say that there should be more effort to make them last longer, especially for the prices, but need to compare apples to apples.

    Playable, durable, and quiet… not necessarily in that order. My wife and I are trying to build a court on our property and believe me, if the game were quieter it would be a hell of a lot easier, but it’s not. We certainly aren’t the only ones. Also, community courts are getting harder and harder to get approval.
    I should have said quieter and legal for tournament play.

    When cursing becomes an issue, the burden should NOT be on the officials to make subjective assessments of a clear rule. Rules that are impractical to enforce must be changed or eliminated. Those officiating must be equal partner to players in making changes. You know, like the volley serve. It should go away.

    So what causes spin? I used to think it was raw Kevlar or carbon fiber but found out it’s actually a clear epoxy coat right? Do some last longer than others? Why can’t we refresh them?

    • @JflipJedi
      @JflipJedi 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A couple companies have said they have texture durability technology that makes them last longer. But from everyone that I know that have used them, it’s minimal at best. The general rule of thumb if you’re using your paddle on a regular basis is that your paddle loses about 1000 rpm per month. And you can’t replace the “grit” because the “grit” is just an imprinted texture on the epoxy sheet that is laminated to the face. So you can’t re imprint it to get the grit back.

    • @mr.mr.3301
      @mr.mr.3301 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JflipJedi this makes me rethink what I’m paying for paddles. I love my J2k but its grit is wearing out faster than I like. So I’m thinking about cheap paddles and often replacement.

    • @JflipJedi
      @JflipJedi 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mr.mr.3301 typically what you’re paying for is paddle construction and materials. Spin is important but only one out of several important characteristics of a good paddle. So you can go for cheap paddles instead but you’ll usually notice a pretty huge difference in sweet spot and feel off the face. You can almost always feel a difference in quality as soon as you hit your first few drives or resets. So, just a matter priorities. Personally, I would prefer to play with a paddle that feels good even if the spin isn’t crazy anymore after 6 months. Rather than replacing a paddle every month but it just never really feels good even when it’s new.
