I hope you enjoy this reading of a very fine story by the wonderful Reggie Oliver (who very kindly gave me permission to read it). If you're curious to check out more of his writing (and I urge you to do so) I've put links in the video description.
    CONTENT WARNING: discriminatory language.

I feel more than a little silly, or stupid, for asking, but am I wrong to think Bloody Bill had a hand in Tristeam's father's death? The holding of hands seemed like there was a sort of pact between them.
The daily routine, calm language, and underlying sense of dread, makes me think I missed something. Or, it could be that I've read too much into it. Mr. Oliver work feels like he's leaving a few openings for his reader's own imagination. And you, Jasper, are an appropriate voice to make alive this drama and mystery.
      Thank you tons. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🌟🌟🌟

@@waningmooncancer9628 I hadn't really thought that he had directly had a hand in it, but I suppose we aren't told what caused the heart attack...and we know he was scared of Bloody Bill.
I wondered, at first, if the holding hands with Tristram was more a case of usurping the father's role, itself a "playing the long game" act of revenge for something that passed between Tristram's father and BB. But I think a pact - of death and resurrection - is heavily suggested.

@@EnCryptedHorror Thanks for replying, appreciate it. It did appear to me that Tristram favored BB over his dad. But that could my focus on the lack of evidence of mourning.
Your portrayals, timing, inflections are all on point, excellent as always. Thanks a million. 👌👍👏👏👏👏👏💖

Did bloody bill switch bodies with him?
Or did he go with him on the boat of the dead, and then come back?
What an awesome and deeply dark story.
      Absolutely loved it.
      Cheers

    • @EnCryptedHorror
      @EnCryptedHorror  ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@StalinLovsMsmZioglowfagz I think it's food for thought. Regeneration seems to be a theme in the story and there are suggestions of BB outliving the expectations of the boat club and wanting Straker's body...so the idea of soul transference occurred to me. Then again, the parallel is clearly drawn between Tristram standing in the same pose as Anubis (and describing him as an undertaker) which would indicate your second theory.
I'm happy for it to be a mystery. Glad you enjoyed it.

I seldom find modern stories as subtle and unsettling as 'classic' ghost stories, but Mr. Oliver has delivered just such a story here, with its mood and atmosphere perfected by your reading, Jasper. First rate all around!

Part of why I find this striking is having known many exceptional youth that didn't survive their twenties. Most had that same seeming desperate need to answer the unanswerable, - along with the lack of self preservation that often accompanies that quest.
I, as well, don't see lives as simply " appreciated" or " wasted", - more like innevitably extended or concluded by the forces of nature and nurture.

    • @EnCryptedHorror

Great story and masterful writing. Being one who also went to a minor public school some fourty years ago and also living and working in Eton the Imaginary landscape is familiar to my mind.
I too am an avid student of Egyptian mysteries, as well as visiting a number of times and possessing a few good artefacts. In fact there is a longer story I have about a beautiful green stone scarab about the size of a hand or indeed a heart as that is what it was. It is now lost to me, because of unfortunate circumstances involving my fathers brief insanity and a curse. But back to the matters at hand.
I assume the boy played a role as psychopomp, given the fact that bloody bill was very intense, with a masterful will and hence the boy who he had a connection with was called out to help him pass along the Thames. I presume Tristan went with bill to the land of the dead and returned to life, for a while and those two wait now for the narrator.
I think it’s fine to adopt another cultures pantheon, my default is Christianity given my upbringing, however Egyptian is my “go to” for normal use. The majestic Horus, motherly isis and unknowable Osiris all powerful archetypes. What I find compelling about the Egyptian deities is the fact they are not cartoons or obvious simple symbolic gods or goddesses.
Let’s take a look at Sekhmet, the old lioness, who is many things and not to be approached with anything but respect. As the old lioness she will fight to the death to protect those who she loves, she is wise and knowledgeable, she is also a destroyer and deadly at times. She will make sure you get into line with her guidance, comfort and help you as well as slap you with a claw if you get out of line. The complex nature of her, shows this is not a simple desert peoples wish fulfilment. These ciphers have great depth and complexity, no easy answers here.
Then he have Bes, who doesn’t even seem to fit into the deities at all ! He is the goblin dwarf, very unusually he is shown front on rather than a profile view when pictured. He has a large phallus, helps those in child birth and scares away worse things. Again it almost seems as if he is a dweller in the Egyptian household but separate from the other deities not being a god from the skies but almost a supernatural entity living on earth.
Lots to ponder amongst the Egyptians and a very fine story, my thanks.

I'm afraid I've nothing original to add- Mr. Ripley expressed my thoughts but better and more succinctly- I kept thinking though, perhaps it's the jargon of the English school system, but I felt as though I WAS in Edwardian days until the mention of the Laura Ashley dress. But I always found them to be like a longing for Victorian garb though the silhouette differs the sentiment seems in stark contrast to modern, ie mini skirts etc- a return to romanticism as ghost stories so often are- and as always evocative diction. You always do each character with a singularity, does that make sense without getting "camp". I shudder at such a monstrous man being a professor with tenure- cruelty and perversion arent virtues but perhaps my naivete is showing...Namaste ( still buzzing over Ghost Walk-!!!)

Egyptian mummies forever haunt the European imagination.... while the jewel eye-of-the-idol has faded, the ape-human deep jungle monster has gone home, the Swedish witch is a mere memory, the mummies still come at us, thank God. - Edit: I wrote this expecting a different story indeed, misled by the Egypt slant.
