  • Rabindranath Tagore depicts the predicament of a little girl named Subhashini, or simply Subha, in his short story "Subha." Subha is also born deaf. And how others around her interpret her silence as an evidence of her lifelessness and a lack of sentiments and emotions.
The story's portrayal of society's deplorable attitudes towards individuals with disabilities is evident at every turn, as Subha's wish to be treated like any other village girl is contrasted with her parents' and the public's contempt for her.
