So many great memories connected to this album and this time of my life only to get better with the music of my Long Island brother..Billy ! Great music !!
This album has such a raw, loud, powerful sound, all the instruments are way over the top, especially the drums and the organ, and its great. The singing is also fantastic
I saw The Hassles at The Hullabaloo Scene in Lindenhurst, NY. After the opening band finished, Billy "Joe" Joel emerged from the green room, stepped up to his B3 and was a one man band. I remember it as if it was yesterday!
Then we werein the same place at the same time. I went there every Friday for I don't remember how long. Great place to meet girls and think you were cool. Hey, Esther Negrin...you still out there ? If I remember correctly, there a band called The Melting Pot with a black lead singer who did the most unbelievable rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". Good times....then I grew up.
Seeing a live band with a B3 and a pair of those giagantic speakers with the spinning horns on the top is seems like some thing you'd see in a dream. unreal.
I was 15 and in the band that opened for them at the Hullabaloo. If you went there you know that the setup was generally the opening band got to set up on 1/3 of the stage and the headliners took 2/3s. Well after we helped Billy get the B3 on stage ( weighed a ton) he said to me this is stupid let’s both spread out on the whole stage and your keyboardist can play the B3. None of the acts we opened for there ever did that. We were ecstatic. Little did we know he’d become the “Piano Man”.
That's awesome guys! My dad gave me this album when he died in 2007. He was born and raised in Yonkers but had friends from long island What a great era of music. I still have it . Is it worth anything? I would never sell it, im just wondering. Thanks
College band guitarist from Brooklyn. Brought this album back from vacay. We learned "I Can Tell" and loved it. So did audiences. The drum part is deep in my muscle memory.
Wow, this is Tremendo. Ha Ha B Joel may have been the less singer. But don't know this is Billy I like. But the ladies love 70!80's different style I suppose 🎸🎹🎤 A Gem. Thanks
The record jacket listed, William Joseph Martin Joel...Affectionately called Billy Joe. I saw him at Nassau Coliseum in 1979 courtesy of a friend whose dad was a record exec. Only now when I looked it up to refresh my memory of the date did I find out that it was a charity event! I was wondering why we were surrounded by people wearing tuxedos and formal gowns at the Coliseum!! lol It was one of the best concerts I ever saw.
So many great Long Island bands . The Vanilla Fudge, Vagrants,Illusion ,Fotomaker,Barnaby Bye . This album sounds very Fudge-ish with some Rascals thrown in . It was a great time to grow up if you were into good rock !
WOW! My father put the Illusions together. When I was kid I used watch them practice at The White Brick Inn which my father owned...The Hassels played at might high school Dances.
@@WilliamAngio Double WOW ! The guitarist Richie C's dad worked for my dad at his barber shop ! They were good friends . First time I saw them play was at his graduation party at their house. The second was when they backed Mitch Ryder at Westbury Music Fair . Good memories Where was your dads club ?
Other bands/performers that I didn't realize were from L.I.: • Santo & Johnny ("Sleep Walk") • The Shangri-Las ("Leader of the Pack“) • Lou Reed (Velvet Underground) • Kiss (several members) • Pat Benatar "Hit Me with Your Best Shot") • Stray Cats ("Sexy & 17") • Steve Vai (Guitarist) • Twisted Sister ("I Wanna Rock")
On Sundae morning, they do what other people do on Sundae morning. On Sundae afternoon, they groove like the Rascals. And on Sundae night, they taste like Vanilla Fudge. They defy categorization. Sing us a song, you're the organ man.
In the late 1960s, two songs by groups with names that started with H briefly got played on Top 40 stations in Washington, DC. I retain this type of knowledge, and later I learned that both groups contained future superstars. "Nothing But Tears" by Hourglass, with Gregg and Duane Allman, and "You've Got Me Hummin'" by the Hassles, with Billy Joel.
If I'd have heard "I Can Tell" anywhere other than here, I'd have put money on it being the Small Faces, circa 65/66. Gritty vocals, rocking Hammond and tight bass line? Yep, the darlings of Wapping Wharf all day long.
The recording on this is really interesting. At first, I though it was a much more recent recording. I'm trying to figure out the studio craft here. How it was miked, how many tracks they used, what was fed directly into the console, etc. It's a very direct sound, not a typical completely separated stereo mix like a lot of stuff in 1967, but not a live sound stage either. But the more I listen, the more it begins to sound like a 1967 recording.
Yeah, How did they do this recording (mix technique, the whole process) that results in this sound with Each instrument and vocal all up front , and on top without the usual layeres. And none interfering with any other. How did they do that? Only thing missing is maybe some additional harmonies because each part is so separate I guess each instrumentand vocal recorded on its own track with no overdubs . But how 4 or 5 tracks come out so independent with only 2 (left and right) separate channels with 2 speakers over listeners' equipment available? I dunno?
They're pretty clearly impersonating Vanilla Fudge, but the vocalist equally clearly isn't anybody in the Fudge. And they play a bit more uptempo than VF would have.
Interesting to note that this album was released around the same time as the first US album by Traffic "Heaven Is In Your Mind", and on the same record label (United Artists) no less.

This is a great album done by a very tight band in the 1960s club circuit. It's a shame that, before Billy Joel really "broke through" that this album and The Hassles didn't garner more attention outside of the "tri-State" area. These guys really delivered. Kind of Sam And Dave meets The Rascals. I can't remember exactly, but getting big gigs for the group became a bit of a problem for the band, since Joel, and perhaps a couple other members, weren't 21 yet. Also - United Artists was NOT a "rock" record label, and they probably really didn't know what to do with the act.

I gotta say this:
"I Love It Just the Way It Is."
How did I miss this as I was growing up? It's great sixties music. Thanks for posting it!
It's Billy Joel...
Not a well known band in the 60's. It features a young Billy Joel yeats before he hit big.

I believe his name was Howie Blouvelt .......
Great album, feels like its live live live...
The best band in the late 60s
Super
Walked past a mosque and there were cars all over the pavements. A tall black man was on security but the door was open.
Sensationally unreal, baby ❤❤❤❤❤
wow, that is pretty unexpectedly complex songwriting...... lot happening on such short record 👍👍
If I had no idea who this was, I would’ve guessed Vanilla Fudge. Such an awesome, raw, gritty album from beginning to end!

tremendo disco, muy pesado para su epoca, tipo deep purple, 66 67 68
Similar Traffic or Deep Purple...

To the people that think Billy Joel was a singer from the 90’s:
no
True that!
I'm glad to now know he was much more than a 90s singer ☺️
He literally only released one album from the 90s
I think you mean the 70s...maybe the 80s? By the 90s he was on oldies stations.
So he did start the fire!
A great psychedelic masterpiece 😅
