      Hi Ben, love the thoroughness and deadpan style of your videos. You seem to highly rate the Nyko Wand+, but I can't find them anywhere (in the UK at least). Is the Nintendo Remote Plus (with built in Motion Plus) a close second or a distant second? Is it a worthwhile upgrade on a standard official remote, for light gun use?

      @@axi0matic Thanks a lot, Matt! I feel the Nintendo Remote Plus is a notable improvement to the non-plus. But the gap to the Nyko Wand+ and the Nintendo Remote Plus is notable too. Still, I would argue the upgrade is worth having =)

    From my experience the Penguin United Crossfire has a massive dead zone in the bottom right corner of the screen, making it impossible to calibrate except when standing up and to the far left. Once it's calibrated it's pretty accurate but that is a very awkward angle to play from. However, there are two versions of the Crossfire (I have version 1 which doesn't support the Motion Plus attachment) so I don't know if that was fixed in version 2.
    Also, for something like House of the Dead 2/3 where rapid fire is a must, I found the Nyko Perfect Shot and Nyko Wand+ combo to be more reliable/consistent than the Crossfire.

    • @Boojakascha
      @Boojakascha  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Very interesting! I think I just know the version with the motion plus socket. I would be interested to hear, whether the sensor alignment problem was a general problem in the Mark 1 or whether quality control was just a bit subpar then.

      @@Boojakascha I'm also curious so I'm on the lookout for version 2, but it may be a while before I can get one due to its extreme rarity and cost. If I do get one at some point, I'll be sure to reply in a comment.
      As far as gun shells go, while I'm overall happy with the Perfect Shot, I'm still on the lookout for something better. The trigger could be lighter, it's missing a proper sight for aiming, and the back of the gun is abrasive to my thumb after long play sessions. I'd like to try some of the examples you recommended but they seem to be impossible to find these days.
      Also, just wanted to say a big thank you for this amazing channel which has by far the most comprehensive set of light gun reviews I've seen anywhere. I approve of your choice to show a Sony BVM as your CRT example. Looks like the monitor showing the sensor bar mods is a PVM too!
    I see light gun games losing popularity to be pretty inevitable. Arcade genres in general have seen a downward trend with few exceptions in the last ten years. On top of that, custom controllers as a trend seemed to have its last hurrah with the Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchise and it's exceedingly rare to see custom controllers for modern systems now. Though Sony reacted to Wiimotes with its superior (in terms of accuracy) Move controllers, it wasn't built into the system and didn't see heavy utilization until PSVR became popular. There just wasn't a chance for light gun games in the modern era, alas.
    I see Wii as kind of the last charge for light gun games. The accuracy sucked, but it was a popular system with a low barrier to entry for developers and had a point and click controller built in. Accordingly, it got a lot of light gun games that I don't think any other system would have gotten.

      It's hard to say what made light guns fall out of fashion. If you think of it, light guns were there since the very beginning (arcades, home video game consoles etc). Maybe it was just bad luck, that the industry didn't got the transition from CRTs right. I agree with you, arcades and specialty controllers are fading. It's a pity and doesn't help light guns to regain ground. Sadly ignorant developers who make light gun-esque games, without light gun support out of laziness, pretending "to not know about modern substitutes" don't help the field. But luckily light guns aren't dead, and have never been. It's less mainstream than it was decades ago, but the enthusiasts didn't loose even a bit of passion. =)

    I actually own a couple wired PowerA Ultra Sensor Bars and love them. However, I dislike that some Nintendo Wii games lack the ability to adjust calibration so I have to aim my gun a bit downward since my sensor bar is positioned just below my TV. Would it be better to use an official Wii Sensor Bar modded by cutting it in half and having one sensor on each side of my TV at half height? For reference, I sit approximately 8 feet away from a 43" wide screen TV and my sensor bar sits just 2 1/2" below my TV.

    • @Boojakascha
      @Boojakascha  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Is it for games that don't calibrate well, or ones which lack a calibration screen all together? If it's for the latter it won't improve the situation much, motion tracking will always be lackluster in those games, no matter what. Still, I use the split technique, as I think helps games that do calibrate properly to track better. I am not 100 % sure whether this is really the case though. I alternate between this and the Ultra Sensor bar =)

    Ok I have made some tests on my wii and a lot of games here my2 cents : Only a few game allow you to calibrate the gun decently on wii, fortunately there are the best one ( house of the dead 2/3/overkill, ghost squad and desperados heroes). In this case, the experience is quite nice (but maybe not as good as a a CRT one) and you can even play without the screen crosshair.
    Others games do not allow calibration and are less good. You have to shoot on the fly for most of them or use tricky ways to aim correcly. (moving the sensor bar from left to right or use a gun with a scope, allowing to aim upper..)
    note: house of dead games memorize the calibration witch is quite convenient. House of dead overkill got unfortunately a reload bug . Not sure 100% yet where this problem comes from .( you need to calibrate the wiimote before playing and deaactivate the shaker in the wii menu I think)
    I agree the more accessibles and good pistols are surely the Niko pistol grip and maybe the nerf pistol . But to also get a gun with a scope can be interesting for others game witch do not allow calibration . About the remote, I don't see the difference between my NIKO wand + and an official nintendo motion plus remote. I prefer the last one because the buttons are in plastic and give better sensation than the Niko wand plus (buttons in rubber, who look spoil after a few game ).

    I agree and disagree, yes Wii should have had calibration and a no cursor option, but I'd argue the Wii also reinvigorated the gun genre some with arcades fading away. There are much better light guns but a Wiimote gets the job done well as a light gun for a stock controller. Some nice specialized Wii guns I've not seen before. :)
    I do think the many empty shell options for Wii guns are very underwhelming compared to actually connecting and adding additional hardware. I'm looking for rumble, bolt actuation, or at least the Wiimote speaker making a noise, some peripheral immersion.

      While I think the Wii and copy cats contributed a lot to the hibernation of light guns, I think that the technology itself (IR based reference system) is great. When done right, the latency is super low (faster than raster recognition on a CRT) while the accuracy and precision are preserved. Sadly it's a balance between ease of use (RGT:G1, Aimtrak, G-Con 3, Arcageguns com) and accuracy (Topgun 3, JayBee DIY 4 IR Led Lightgun System). In general I love IR guns and I am glad they exist.

      @@Boojakascha the forward grip? It is a little on the small side compared to the nyko perfect shot. But the way I hold it it isn't much of an issue. Most of the pressure I place on my forearm. I have found that I prefer the weight of it on games that are not designed to be light gun accurate. For instance I love Darkside Chronicles. It has a sight adjustment but sadly does not adjust far enough to get into my reticle. So I sort of use the zapper from my forearm and close to my chest, and I find that I get head shots consistently. But for games like Ghost Squad, House of the Dead overkill, and Dead Space, I'm able to adjust the sights perfectly and use the nyko perfect shot. I'm really excited to try out the controllers you suggested when they get here. I guess that means I won't even need the peripherals with the built-in nunchuck but I really want them. I'm also ordering a Winchester shell from France that looks really cool and works with the game Western Heroes. You've got me collecting this stuff oh, and I had no idea any of it existed so appreciate it. I have a lot of firearms in real life and I'm posting a video that shows the setup I have for my firearm that makes me feel more comfortable with the Zapper. Comment in Amazon :
    "Device does not turn on at all, with several different sets of known good fresh batteries. No lights light up at all. Wand appears to be non-functional.
    Upon closer inspection of the circuit board inside, it is apparent that the manufacturing of the circuit board does not indicate good quality. On one of the pictures a splashed solder blob is clearly visible (circled with a red circle). Also some round epoxy-covered chips are clearly visible. Such chips are usually produced on no-name factories, and may or may not be of good quality. It becomes apparent why there are so many bad opinions about 3rd party controllers such as this Nyko Wand+ for Wii. It is because of the low quality manufacturing that cuts corners to achieve low price. With such a low quality device the prospect of buying Nyko controller becomes a hit or miss. You might get a controller that works great, at least for a while, or you can get one that is completely non-working, or that has intermittent problems because of poor soldering or solder blobs possibly shorting some connections at one time or another. Design an quality of the plastic case and buttons appears good. Design of the circuit may be good too. It is clearly sloppy quality of the circuit and its components that make this non-working Nyko Wand+ a one-star in my opinion."
