The gag at 5:27 is a reference to a gag in the Ren and Stimpy episode "Man's Best Friend", where Stimpy dances around while holding a 'lawn cigar' in his mouth while acting like a dog. The reason I know this is not just because I've seen the episode, but Logan was looking for the music title itself when making this episode and actually asked me for help with finding it.

Actually, our Special Thanks credits were for various favors involved in this project. Mine was assisting in finding the music for the scene where Joy prances around with a candy cane, which was a reference to a scene from the Ren and Stimpy episode "Man's Best Friend".

12:00 Well, they use a clever technique in Flash called puppet rigging. You basically make a puppet of a pony composed of all sorts of different body parts as vector graphics, each of them can have pre-made animation sequences (e.g. for eye blinks, mane fluff, wing flutter, different mouth shapes, walk cycles etc.), and you can move them around and select animation frames in each key frame, and then automatically tween them. There are usually several different views for each puppet, starting from just three (front, side, 3Q), up to full 360° body rotation.

In production-quality animation you can also use more advanced techniques, like bone systems and inversed kinetics, which could make that process much more easier, but it requires some extra work upfront to prepare the puppets for that.

Applegeek Well, I know how these animations are done, and I'm sure I could do it myself, but I found out that the biggest problem is something else altogether: it's Adobe Flash :P I use only free software (as in freedom) since many years, so I had a very hard time trying to install and use Flash. It's almost like Adobe didn't want me to do it, because their website doesn't allow me to download the installer when they detect that I use Linux (as if that had anything to do with DOWNLOADING the installer :P is it that hard to think that I download it on Linux and run in a simulated & sandboxed Windows environment? :P )
When I sent them fake HTTP headers to make them think I use Windows, they allowed me to download the damn installer (1 GB!), but it turned out that the installer is not the actual software yet! First it scanned all my system for around half an hour (sic!), and then started downloading the actual Flash from some secret location, sending a lot of stuff from my machine to that location first (thank Celestia that was a fake system too! :P ).
When I finally run the program, nothing happened. I thought it doesn't work, but to my surprise the main window appeared suddenly after another half an hour! "Well, at least it works" - I thought to myself.
The next problem was with creating a new, empty project, because there was a wizard which allowed me to create all sorts of different template projects, but not an empty one :P It took me a while how to do it, because the option is hidden in their GUI.
Then I opened a pony puppet and fiddled with it for a while. My experiences with this software was very bad, when compared with the free tools I usually use (Inkscape). It's very crude with vector graphics editing, and very limited. The only good feature of this software is the time line and the possibility to use library symbols with their own animations. (The only thing which is lacking in Inkscape so far, thought there are some plans to introduce it in future.)
As if that was not enough, the software was crashing all the time :P and I had to start over, because it doesn't automatically store my session to restore it after a crash :P
But the straw which broke the pony's back was the fact that I couldn't export my content to any open format, like SVG, to be able to edit it in other software. It can only export to the closed formats used by other Adobe software :P So it's pretty much a black hole: whatever comes into their systems, it must stay there forever. I'm glad that I didn't pay a bit to them, because I would literally pay for my prison :P (Adobe forces users to pay yearly fees for using their software, otherwise they take your works captive and you no longer can use them nor export outside their closed system until you prolong your license :P )
So yeah, so much for the non-free software. Now I know why they call it non-free :P
That's why I started writing my own little tool to export vectors from FLA files to SVG which I could use in Inkscape and SynFig Studio:

It's still very limited, but I least I could export some static vectors from those FLA pony puppets and use them in Inkscape. But later on it turned out that I can make my own pony vectors all well in Inkscape, so importing them from FLA puppets won't save me _that_ much time anyway...
So yeah... free software rules, Adobe drools :P
Wow, you're way more of a geek than I am. XD I mean that in the nicest possible way, btw. I don't have anything against Linux, but I'm a Windows guy myself (I know, ironic, given my OC name), largely because that's what most business IT systems run on, and that's the world I live in. Anyway, I've never played around with Flash before, might have to download a trial one of these days to poke around in it a bit. All I have access to right now is After Effects, which I've used for various projects (GOL Tribute, channel intros, Alicorn analysis video, Try Everything PMV, and the opening skit on my 1k special), and that costs $30/month plus tax. If I bumped up to $50/month, I believe I would have access to the entire Adobe library, which is actually a pretty solid deal. That might be the contract price though, not sure. They have different pricing for 1-year contract deals vs. month-by-month.
