    The set-up reminds me a lot of probably my favorite dungeon crawler, Shadow Tower, which came out 2 years earlier.

      @@gamesacrosstimeandspace6162 it isn't very forgiving, but like most Fromsoft's catalog, the difficulty is mostly frontloaded, and it becomes way more manageable once you understand how it all works. I love the King's Field series and recommend them as well as the sequel to Shadow Tower, Shadow Tower: Abyss (PS2). Also, the Echonight series from Fromsoft is amazing! Peace.

    Wizardry as a series is largely slept on,
    Who would have known it would be Japanese that carried its torch.

    This game is an absolute masterpiece and too much underrated
    Gameplay is awesome
    The characters are all memorable
    The soundtrack is perfect
    The story is absolutely outstanding
    10/10 IMO

    I have a copy of this game. The just doesn't always work in a PS2 but when it does, I have lots of fun playing. I always went with characters that you couldn't normally change their class to get more story as you get deeper in The Labyrinth

    I recently found this in storage. Finally! This is my favorite Wizardry game/DRPG. I wish they would port this to Switch. I'll probably just get a new external disc drive and laptop and just play on a PS2 emulator as my PS2 doesn't work so well anymore.

      I knew about the abyss existing, but it proved too much to cover in the short time I was able to spend with the game this time. It's only accessible after beating the game, and as you said, it gets extremely tough. If I ever revisit older games on the list, I'll bring up the abyss as well. I've understood, that the new monsters are the cool part about it, but besides that it's just more difficult encounters at random.

      Yeah, I felt the same way about this game when I first found it. A lot of modern games appear mysterious at first glance and then fall flat, but Wizardry keeps the mystery going all the way to the end with it’s awesome plot twists. Definitely worth getting into it! Glad you liked the video 👍

    This game is pretty good, but to anyone looking to emulate it, it does lag on some enemies. For some reason, enemy Ninjas made my previous computer drop the game to SINGLE digit fps whenever I encountered them, which really makes me wonder...is that just an emulation problem? Does that happen in the physical game too?
    Also, if you look up the pinned comment for the video "Let's Look At Busin 0: Wizardry Alternative Neo" the person there put up a link for the translation!! What a legend, now just to FIND the game bios itself...

    • @gamesacrosstimeandspace6162
      @gamesacrosstimeandspace6162  ปีที่แล้ว

      Translations are amazing! Thank you for bringing this to people's attention ❤ It can get impossibly difficult to find the actual games and there's some sites out there that are shadier than a hedgehogs ankles. Be careful while looking 😐
      The slowdowns are an emulation specific problem. I've played this on an original PS2 physical copy and the only issues I remember are little "audio cracks" that would indicate some type of slowdown where audio gets messed up. But graphically, not even enough to notice a hitch. I found my emulation to run very smoothly back when I recorded this, with "almost" no slowdowns even with the ninjas. I remember the big difference came from using Direct3D 11 Hardware acceleration. That's found under Config -> Video (GS) -> Plugin Settings. Make sure you're also updated to the latest version of PCSX2. Hope this helps.

    Did you ever do the bonus bottomless random labyrinth? It was available after you complete the game. I can't remember how far down I went in that one

    • @gamesacrosstimeandspace6162
      @gamesacrosstimeandspace6162  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      In this playthrough I recorded I didn't go that far, since I was on a schedule to move to the next video. At the time I was releasing one video every month. But when I originally played this game, I remember delving at least some levels down the bottomless labyrinth. It felt like the enemies were mostly the same but much tougher, so I remember eventually just starting a new game with a different party 🙂

      @gamesacrosstimeandspace6162 I had fun in that dungeon. I would play it now but my copy of the game is rather iffy. I can get it to work maybe 1 in50 tries if I'm lucky.

      @@billcox8870 I've been thinking, when I eventually make it the end of my top100 list, I'll make episodes on "things I missed in my videos". The labyrinth would definitely be one of those things to showcase. And it's a shame about the disc not being read. Sounds like either a faulty disc, or dirt in the reading laser. If you own the game and are able to dump it, you could make it work on emulator. But then you'd need a PC compatible PS2 controller if you want a more authentic experience.

    Also worth mentioning that there was nothing worse than being halfway through a dungeon and having characters killed.
    Followed by trying to revive them and failing to do so, dead characters would become ash, if you failed to revive them there youd lose the characters forever

    • @gamesacrosstimeandspace6162
      @gamesacrosstimeandspace6162  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, right? Losing a magic user with almost all the spells leveled up or the character who had the highest trust value is so painful. At the time when it happens nothing could be worse, but I remember one playthrough when I permanently lost Kyo in floor 6 (to the chimeras), and continued to play the game without loading an earlier save... I never got it finished because it became so hard, but it was kind of a fond memory afterwards. Struggling with everything, trying to bring the new guy up to speed, enabling all Allied Actions for a second time etc.. Like you mentioned earlier it's a game that can get you seriously hooked 😁

      @@gamesacrosstimeandspace6162 literally every character you can get is important, I remember having kyo, kulgan and Nina on front row as critical attacks were always useful.
      I changed my character to a knight.
      Lost kulgan at B10 testament level.
      Being stubborn I tried to revive him twice and eventually lost him(for those that don't know Kulgan gives you a massive trust boost when he joins the team).
      Honestly I have so many fond memories and frustrated memories of playing this game.
      Hard to believe how simply put this game was but also complex on it own.

      @gamesacrosstimeandspace6162  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nunofontes9352 That's all very true. And it does look simple at first glance, but then you begin to realize how much it can take away from you and just how complex and difficult things can get. Also B10 was hard as nails even without anything going wrong 😮 It's amazing if you manage a comeback from a loss like that

      @@gamesacrosstimeandspace6162 indeed.
      I bumped it eventually, got into a room with a vampire boss lookalike and I genuinely couldn't kill him with Kulgan out of the party.
      Loaded the game to a previous save and done a few side quests, ended up somewhat somehow getting Grace & Wolfe( only used Grace) she was a massive boost to the party as well.
      After a couple of hours doing sidequests and training I went back to that horrible B10 level and cleared it ok.
      If I remember correctly the hardest bugger to kill for me was Nina's brother, mostly because I was unprepared for the status ailments he does to you 🤦.
      I miss this game 😂

      @@nunofontes9352 Nina's brother (called Nachi), ohh man. That fight scared me. You drop down into a hole and the text appears: "The nauseating stench of beast fills the air".. You see like a torn up skeleton in the background and hear the snarl of a beast and then it's on... I got pretty lucky with restrict shots, but he still killed Michele from my backrow just with his Zakulds.

    This game gained a prequel, but it was never localized.

    • @gamesacrosstimeandspace6162
      @gamesacrosstimeandspace6162  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like something fans of the series may one day attempt to fix with custom content, hopefully 😉 Have you played the prequel, and if you did, was it as good as this game?

    • @Lunaraia
      @Lunaraia 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gamesacrosstimeandspace6162 I played the prequel, but since I couldn't understand a single word it was a bit of a bummer. Especially since Undead are more common on early floors.
      It did add another class and expanded character generation by adding gender to the mix and also another race. It also added a bunch of spells that were really helpful, like one that would allow you to cure fear.
      The Reaper Door return as well, with one on every floor, which would lead into an unmappable area with a rare item in it that you would have to find.
      Enemy glyphs are now black smoke in the same vague outlines as in the first game, which makes it a bit harder to identify exactly what you are encountering.
      Battles animations are faster, new allies actions, new gear, and better dungeons. Certain spells like Leap are now low-level spells you can pick up quite easily. Overall a vast improvement.
      Only wish I could understand anything about what was going on, as there are ALOT of events in the game with a story or mechanic significance that I had no idea what did.
      Then of course it was figuring out equipment, no easy task when you can't understand what each piece does.
      As for localization, been looking for one for years, have yet to find one.

    • @gamesacrosstimeandspace6162
      @gamesacrosstimeandspace6162  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Lunaraia It's a huge shame that there isn't a localization, because that description sounds brilliant! I think for me the localization would be a must, because the story of this game gripped me along very strongly, and I wouldn't want to miss out on the story, even though I'd enjoy those new features. I think I would also be lost with the equipment, and it would take a lot of guesswork.
      Thank you for sharing these points about the prequel. I've made a note to check up on developments in the future. If you happen to find a localization somewhere, please post a message about it here. I'll make sure to put it visible on this video, so others can find it as well. 👍
