🦴 Grim Dawn 🖱️ (PC, 2016) #️⃣ Rank 78/100
UPDATE, August 2022: It's been a long time since the last video, and this has been due to serious hardware failure and health issues. The channel is not done, and the series will continue. Working on solutions as fast as I'm able to. See you in the next episode, hopefully sometime soon!
GATS Top 100 list, episode 78: Grim Dawn.
How could a dawn get any more grim than to wake up to being hanged by the neck. In this PC action RPG (aRPG) adventure, you customize a character that carries part of the power of a spirit called an aetherial. Your mission is to survive and help out small towns and outposts to fend off an attack by these aetherials and other evil creatures.
It’s definitely one of the best Diablo clones out there, and works great as co-op. If you have someone you could play it with, just go for it! Here’s hoping we will one day get a Grim Dawn sequel.
GATS Top 100 is my personal game ranking list, where you might find familiar classics and unknown gems! Maybe you're wondering which game to stream on youtube or twitch? Here's some ideas! :-)

      In this playthrough I recorded I didn't go that far, since I was on a schedule to move to the next video. At the time I was releasing one video every month. But when I originally played this game, I remember delving at least some levels down the bottomless labyrinth. It felt like the enemies were mostly the same but much tougher, so I remember eventually just starting a new game with a different party 🙂

      @@billcox8870 I've been thinking, when I eventually make it the end of my top100 list, I'll make episodes on "things I missed in my videos". The labyrinth would definitely be one of those things to showcase. And it's a shame about the disc not being read. Sounds like either a faulty disc, or dirt in the reading laser. If you own the game and are able to dump it, you could make it work on emulator. But then you'd need a PC compatible PS2 controller if you want a more authentic experience.

    This game is pretty good, but to anyone looking to emulate it, it does lag on some enemies. For some reason, enemy Ninjas made my previous computer drop the game to SINGLE digit fps whenever I encountered them, which really makes me wonder...is that just an emulation problem? Does that happen in the physical game too? Also, if you look up the pinned comment for the video "Let's Look At Busin 0: Wizardry Alternative Neo" the person there put up a link for the translation!! What a legend, now just to FIND the game bios itself...

    • @gamesacrosstimeandspace6162
      @gamesacrosstimeandspace6162 ปีที่แล้ว

      Translations are amazing! Thank you for bringing this to people's attention ❤ It can get impossibly difficult to find the actual games and there's some sites out there that are shadier than a hedgehogs ankles. Be careful while looking 😐 The slowdowns are an emulation specific problem. I've played this on an original PS2 physical copy and the only issues I remember are little "audio cracks" that would indicate some type of slowdown where audio gets messed up. But graphically, not even enough to notice a hitch. I found my emulation to run very smoothly back when I recorded this, with "almost" no slowdowns even with the ninjas. I remember the big difference came from using Direct3D 11 Hardware acceleration. That's found under Config -> Video (GS) -> Plugin Settings. Make sure you're also updated to the latest version of PCSX2. Hope this helps.

      Try going to Config - Video - Plugin Settings, and set Renderer to Direct3D9 (Software) mode. This worked for me on PCSX2 1.4.0 which I recorded this footage with. Another issue I remember having earlier was a VU1 error, so Config - Video - Core GS Settings - VUs, and try all the VU1 related options available. If these don't work, click "Misc" tab in the menu, and Show Console. PLay for a bit with the console open and see what kind of errors it's giving. Hope these help 🤔

      I knew about the abyss existing, but it proved too much to cover in the short time I was able to spend with the game this time. It's only accessible after beating the game, and as you said, it gets extremely tough. If I ever revisit older games on the list, I'll bring up the abyss as well. I've understood, that the new monsters are the cool part about it, but besides that it's just more difficult encounters at random.

    How can I emulate this with minimal lag ? Thank you

    • @gamesacrosstimeandspace6162
      @gamesacrosstimeandspace6162 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could see if using the graphics plugin GLideN64 (not Glide64*) works better with Project 64 emulator. The video results you see above are achieved with a 1080 Ti, 30 fps, recorded at 1080p fullscreen. You could attempt to lower the resolution. Also make sure you are up to date on the latest version of the emulator. Reduce multisampling and anisotropic filtering rate. There's lots of other options you can try, that reduce quality, like frame buffer settings. I didn't have to change these settings much to get an acceptable experience, but there was still some lag occasionally (especially in Oedo, and cutscenes). Hope this helps a bit.

    • @Lunaraia
      @Lunaraia 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gamesacrosstimeandspace6162 I played the prequel, but since I couldn't understand a single word it was a bit of a bummer. Especially since Undead are more common on early floors. It did add another class and expanded character generation by adding gender to the mix and also another race. It also added a bunch of spells that were really helpful, like one that would allow you to cure fear. The Reaper Door return as well, with one on every floor, which would lead into an unmappable area with a rare item in it that you would have to find. Enemy glyphs are now black smoke in the same vague outlines as in the first game, which makes it a bit harder to identify exactly what you are encountering. Battles animations are faster, new allies actions, new gear, and better dungeons. Certain spells like Leap are now low-level spells you can pick up quite easily. Overall a vast improvement. Only wish I could understand anything about what was going on, as there are ALOT of events in the game with a story or mechanic significance that I had no idea what did. Then of course it was figuring out equipment, no easy task when you can't understand what each piece does. As for localization, been looking for one for years, have yet to find one.

      @@Lunaraia It's a huge shame that there isn't a localization, because that description sounds brilliant! I think for me the localization would be a must, because the story of this game gripped me along very strongly, and I wouldn't want to miss out on the story, even though I'd enjoy those new features. I think I would also be lost with the equipment, and it would take a lot of guesswork. Thank you for sharing these points about the prequel. I've made a note to check up on developments in the future. If you happen to find a localization somewhere, please post a message about it here. Oh there definitely was occasional lag, like the opening video and wide shots of Oedo, but they lasted for a few seconds at a time. You could see if using the graphics plugin GLideN64 (not Glide64*) works better for you with Project 64. The video results you see above are achieved with a 1080 Ti, 30 fps, recorded at 1080p fullscreen. I've tried to design my channel to not focus too much on current issues with emulation etc., because I think these things will change with every year that passes by. At least I found the game very much playable from beginning to end with minor inconvenient lagging moments. At the time of recording, there was an upcoming update to Retroarch, which was supposed to make this work even smoother. Might be worth trying too. I'm willing to help find solutions if some newer, better method comes along 🙂

Very timely comparison as well, since I am studying media, and photography is a part of what we do. I'll be checking out a few of his videos later 😉 And yeah, Tyrian itself is a very deep game full of secrets, but there are in fact more games which closely resemble Tyrian... have you bumped into a game called Dezaemon on SNES? Could almost swear it's in the same universe.

      @@gamesacrosstimeandspace6162 That's quite the coincidence, doing photography is awesome and something I enjoy! I hope Mattias will have information that will be useful to you. That's the first time I have heard of Dezaemon. I watched some game play and the resemblance is uncanny, like the artistry of the maps, the camera movement, the player's weapons, some of the enemy projectiles, their formations and patterns, even the light beam attack, and the way surface targets in the destroyed state are shown right after the player blows them up is so much like Tyrian.

      @@VictorGee I tried looking up whether the same artists worked on both games or something. Eclipse Software started developing Tyrian in 1991 with Daniel Cook as lead artist (was released in 1995), whereas Dezaemon was developed by Japan based "Kid Corp", a.k.a. Kindle Imagine Develop (released in 1991). I couldn't find more info on who the artists were at Kid. Just curious, because there's too much likeness for this to be a complete coincidence 🧐😅

If you're pressed for time, it can be played in a rather linear way as well, just focusing on the main plot, and that way you could complete it in a shorter time.
