in four level laser with the help of pumping the atoms from ground state N1 are raised to excited state N4, from the N4 the atoms decay to N3 by spontaneous emission the translation rate of atom from n4 to n3 is much faster because of lifetime of the atom is very small as compared to transition rate from n3 to n2 in three level laser N3 state is metastable state( this state is where atom can stay for longer lifetime than excited state N4) so there will be crowd of atoms at N3 pumping rate is high but deexcitation from N3 to N2will slow down Thus 4 level laser operates faster, It's light is more coherent and dispersion of light is less
