  • It was long overdue; we needed a trip up into the Colorado high-country and what a better time to do it. Fall arrived in the mountains in its wonderful glistening aspen tree fashion with cool nights and warm days. We loaded up the car, grabbed the pups and set off on another wonderful journey.
Our trip took us across seven mountain passes, breathtaking landscapes in areas we had yet to discover. The nights were cold, the days were warm, and the scenery was out of this world.
Follow along, enjoy the views and wait for the outtakes at the end!
A word of CAUTION, the roads on some of these passes are very rough, narrow, steep, and have serious drop-offs. Do not attempt unless you are experienced in these types of offroad conditions and have a properly equipped vehicle, aka 4X4 or all-wheel drive with decent clearance, hill decent, and all terrain tires. Our Subaru Crosstrek did great, especially with the addition of the BF Goodrich Trail Terrain tires and many years of experience driving in the Colorado mountains. We would never attempt Weston Pass, Paradise Divide, and Schofield Pass in anything less than a Subaru with proper tires.
    Timeline:
Denver to Twin Lakes (Day 1) 00:00, Kenosha Pass 01:54, Weston Pass 03:09, Camping at Twin Lakes 08:31, Twin Lakes to Crested Butte (Day 2) 12:20, Independence Pass 14:54, McClure Pass 20:08, Kebler Pass 24:06, Paradise Divide Loop & Schofield Pass 28:18, Camping in Washington Gulch 32:50, Crested Butte back to Denver (Day 3) 39:40, Cottonwood Pass 43:29, Outtakes 50:03

@tangenttrails An overdue trip with great surprises around every bend! We kept saying, Hashtag would be in heaven since the Aspen is his spirit tree.

You picked a great autumn to go up there. It's been dry and toasty warm.

We weren't sure if we'd see any colors after leaving so late in the season, but wow, we found some. McClure Pass was the biggest surprise.

I was just out in the twin lakes area in August. Nice to see the color of the aspens. Cheers!

@garagebrewer Twin Lakes has always been a good stop for us, either while on the Colorado Trail, or just a dispersed campsite. The mountains in the backdrop never disappoint!
