Hi Emperor, The survivors were 30 to 35 miles away from Krakatoa. By the time the flow reached them it had cooled down so that about 2/3 of the group had survived. Please read Johanna Beyerinck's diary - the link is provided at the bottom of the information box. They may have survived, but barely!
I am pretty sure survivors must had been more farther. They wouldn't be sitting like that peacefully because the explosion would had made them all deaf.

Glad these people were just far enough away to get away with some third degree burns but still alive, guess when it comes to volcanoes we should consider them lucky to survive such horrors. @@20PINKluvr yep, and as well as literally cooling itself the flow ran out of speed by the time it hit the village. So it was both DRASTICALLY cooled and very HOT at the same time
