I heard Eric Marienthal cover this song recently, and I figured I'd give it a try. Audio/Video recorded on a Zoom Q3 recorder, and effects added in software.
You sir are spectacular. I listened to Eric's version, and man, I have to agree with everyone else, your skills are off the charts, and I'm perfectly honest, I'm not exaggerating. The feeling that you put into every note is just amazing, you make every single note count. When I listened to Eric's version I did not get the chills and goosebumps as I did when I listened to yours. Oh, man this is just what I want. Thanks to you I started taking courses in saxophone and am making great progress, I'm currently borrowing a saxophone but son enough I'm going to invest in my own. The Alto sax funk solo video of yours was the first video that I saw by you and ever since then you've been my great inspiration (I even think you can find a couple of old comments done by me there asking for advice). I have even showed my girlfriend, mother and my saxophone teacher your videos. Haha. Anyway, thanks for sharing your amazing talent with us and thanks for being an inspiration. I'm 17 right now and wish that I some day will be able to play like you. I've been playing guitar for 7 years, can play drums, bass and basic keyboard and have a very musical family so I help that will at least help me to some degree. Hope this all doesn't sound to exaggerating as I'm really telling the truth. Stay awesome David!
Kyriakos Constantinou I don't know what to say. That is unbelievably flattering. I really appreciate it. It's not always easy to be motivated, but this kind of stuff helps more than I can express. Thank you so much!!
David Strong And he is not the only one! Much of the same here for me... you really are a wonderful source of inspiration and that Alto Funk Sax video of yours made me start playing the sax myself and I just love it! :-)
You are absolutely fantastic!!! I just started playing the alto sax and I have to teach myself haha. I hope I eventually sound close to as good as you do. May I ask what brand of sax you own?
David if you ever want to come to Queensland, Australia for a holiday you have a place to stay, I play Alto myself and we have a lot of good jams out here, you are welcome any time.
Heck I just tripped over this and didn't even recognize it was u dave.....Awesome has something there and I've told you before.....very nice ....love ya man......
Way too long! :) Seriously though, it's fingered xox xox with the octave key down. The more overtone work you do, the easier it will be to play up there. If you have any other questions, let me know! Thanks! Dave
Lavoz medium-hard. I think overtone practice, and long tones are incredibly important. Other than that, listen as much as you can, and emulate what you like. It's a lot of work, but fun work!!! Thanks!
This is one of my favorite songs to hear on the saxophone of all time. I just love the feel of the song the different images it can put in your head....I have listen to Eric marienthals version before this one. Sadly to say his is still my favorite... Especially when he hits that altissimo G....but you're an amazing player and I can tell you have a strong emotional feel about your playing great job.
I listened to your cover of this and then i listened to eric's... Dude your much better. Not fingering difficulty, just the feel you have in it, im only a freshman in HS, but im sounding this song out. Sounds fantastic
I know... I'm sticking to my student horns for now which still costs almost a grand. My goal is to play professionally and when I get that good I'll also be upgrading and hopefully, the horns can pay for themselves over time. Or on the other hand, if I'm rich enough to buy some expensive toys, why not? :)
Wow I came across you over 2 years ago. You opened up my eyes to the beauty and sexuality of th Alto sax. I Thank you from the bottom of my Aussie heart.....I still listen to you everyday xx
Great Cover! I've worked on overtones for a while and now trying to work on altissimo. The fingering you mentioned above is pretty different(clearer and easier) from what Im learning. Between 2.46 and 2:54, you played G A B and then descended on the G pentatonic scale. How did you finger the altissimo A and B? Thanks alot
Dave! Absolutely loved the playing! Your sound is just beautiful! I really love your "funk alto solo" video, also!! I'll hopefully be seeing you play with Power of 10 when you guys play at Champps on the 9th!! Look forward to hearing you play and maybe talking after!!

You really are a good saxofon player I love it , when i listen some the saxofon is calm to me! Goood job and enjoy what you do !
Thank you Laura!!!
A lot of it is the mics on the zoom q3. They are great, so I don't really do much equalizing. I do add some reverb though.
Thanks! I try to play 2-3 hours a night, hopefully more though. Thanks!
Wow..sound great..Just a few lil off moment but he knew how to recover..great job bro..
Thank you so much!! It's a selmer mark vi.
how you equalize it? Do you use some especial effect? Because when i record don't sound like it...

Thanks a lot!
I bought it from some Karaoke site. I (unfortunately) can't remember which, but it was about 2.99 for the track.

Pure Beauty Dave! But there is a huge step you made foreward up to today. Your timing just got even better. Be proud!
Fantastic music! Is there any chance you could play porcelain by Moby?
Lavoz medium-hard. I think overtone practice, and long tones are incredibly important. Other than that, listen as much as you can, and emulate what you like. It's a lot of work, but fun work!!!
Thanks!
Around 4 thousand each. I bought them over the span of 10 years though, so it took years of saving up between each one! :)
Really, just listen and play as much as you can. It's a lot of work, but a lot of fun too!!
A modern one. There's some good ones out there, although you have to weed through a lot of bad ones to get there. :)
Man, that is really nice to hear. Thanks a ton!!! I do some recording, but never have done any of my own stuff.

Nice! I'd love to go to Australia, I've got lots of friends from there, and it sounds great!!!
Thanks!!!
Most of my life, about 20 years. Please don't kill my family. ;)
Do you use a modern or vintage Meyer?
You're spectacular - don't let the "you're better than eric marienthal" comments get too far into your head though ;)
How Much Did your Selmer Mark VI cost alto @ tenor?
What kind of reed do you use? & how do you practice?
Thank you! That's awesome to hear....I'll do my best! ;)
Ich werde noch viel üben müssen um nur in die Nähe dieses sounds zu kommen.Danke.
How long did it take you to get the altissimo g
Молодец, почти идеально... сам знаешь где схалтурил...
Make me deaf, but this is going max volume! :D
That'd be fun. I'll see what I can do!
Thanks!

I've come to learn that with subtle embouchure adjustments and a LOT of practice that you can rip altissimo apart with the F key above the B.
What mouthpiece are you using?
Nice man! Thanks a lot!
Immensely heartfelt. Your ideas speak to me. I absolutely love your interpretations and improvisations. In. FUCKING. Credible!!!!
do you like metal mouthpieces, have you ever tried one
Thanks as always!!!!
