    Hi Profty just letting you know this was the video that I watched and bought my first rifle. I bought this exact rifle and I just dropped a 28 inch sambar on the weekend. You bloody legend. It took me 25 hunts but I’m stoked. Really appreciate all the advice you put out there it means heaps. I’ve learnt so much of you about practical shooting positions to back pack hunting and what to carry. I couldn’t believe I got a big one the 7mm-08, 140 grain corelocks do the job on the big boys. You just have to hit them in the right spot. Cheers mate

    The humble 6.5cm is worth a mention. Shoots flat and the 140 grain soft points do everything.

    I love my 7-08 too, low recoil, plenty of punch and somehow is so easy to reload for. I use 100 gr hp's for varmint and 140 bt's for everything else with amazing accuracy . I sold 9 guns and decided to own only 1 (apart from an air rifle) and now find I am a master of one instead of none. Great video and keep them coming.

    Bear in mind cost of ammo according to different calibres. Also availability. Usually low availability means sky high prices. Stock standard Aussie calibres are .22, .223 and .308. It's that easy. If you're made of money then disregard. Most of us aren't.

  • @marcfloyd9082
    @marcfloyd9082 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My woods rifle is a BLR in 308. It's a lever action that locks up as strong as and shoots as well as a bolt action. Plus it has a detachable magazine making it super easy to load and unload. I chose it because I really like the option of quick follow up shots, especially for things like pigs.
    Great advice about scopes and calibers.
    I usually recommend 308 purely because it's cheap, abundant and will take everything in this country. With a properly zeroed rifle you will be good for a dead on hold from 0 - 250 yards on the boiler room of a deer. Which is plenty for forest hunting.
    I don't know about NSW but here in VIC there is this strange myth amongst a lot of shooters that you need a minimum of 300WSM before you can even think about going after Sambar. It's a cute notion lol.

    Hello,
    Your videos inspired me to finally decide to give deer hunting a go. 2022 was going to be the year but a cancer diagnosis, two major surgeries and caring for an elderly parent put that on the back burner. I've recovered well and seem to clear of the "Big C", as "The Duke", John Wayne referred to it! I haven't taken out a rifle into the bush as yet but I've been scouting around looking for deer sign---trails, nibbled bushes and beds in the forests close to where I live. I would not shoot in these areas but they give me a fine and accessible place to develop much needed skills before I enter other areas. There seems to be a lot of deer activity near by--sambar but I've occasionally seen reds and fallow. These may be from some of the local venison farms that went bust.
    As yet, I do not have a centrefire rifle in a suitable deer caliber. I'm half way considering using my .58 caliber muzzleloader on deer. It is loaded with a 450--500 grain projectile and 60 to 70 grains of black powder. Definitely legal for the Victorian muzzleloading deer category. While it/I is accurate out to 2-300 yards, I'd be putting a limit on myself to 50 yards or less in the bush. What are your thoughts on this choice as I would value them greatly?
    Another thought I had was using rifled adapters in my single 12 gauge shotgun. I have two adapters in .357 and .44 magnum. I bought these as a bit of a hoot and found them surprisingly accurate at short range up to 25 yards. This may not be far but I've come across a lot of deer at very close distances when I've been hiking or fly fishing. Not sure if slipping a rifled adapter into a shotgun would have it considered to be a rifle. Maybe I'm overthinking all this and should just go out an buy a suitable rifle?
    Rambled on a bit. Thanks for all your videos and the incentives they have given me.
    Cheers,
    Steve

    I use 243 for red deer in NZ using a infrared scope and it’s devastating out to 350-400 mtrs, accurate enough to neck shoot at that range. IR does give you the luxury of taking time to line up the shot tho. That said 7mm08 is on the shopping list this year

    7mm 08 and 243 are just 308s necked down to 6mm and 7mm respectfully giving a bit more velocity, less recoil. Nice set up on your rifle but I like my scope down as close to barrel as possible, and only steel scope base and rings. A little heavier than aluminum but rock solid and no probs with dissimilar metals screwed together.

I hunt the Pilbra WA horses donkeys and camels, dingo's don't get back up, and feral cats Vaporize . add a 10 round standard mag and the smoothest, fastest bolt action rifle ever made. In my opinion The greatest gun ever made. Did i mention the best Priced gun also sorry but when you factor this all in it is the best all round gun one can buy..

      Yeah people talk a lot about caliber for certain animals but I feel like accuracy would be just as important since a 243 to the right spot is probably much better than a 308 to the but.

    Hey mate, I really really love your stuff and I'm fascinated with and love guns. I do lots and lots of reading and research on calibres and ballistics. I love the 7mm 08 round as well. It's ballistics are very comparable to the .270 you mentioned. The .270 has a little more punch and slightly more recoil to go along with that. It's slightly better at distance than the 7mm 08 having a slightly higher muzzle velocity. Where the .270 has a major advantage is with ammo choice. At HPGS 7 08 has 5 or 6 choices while. 270 has 21 including Hornady ELDX which is not available in
    7 08. If I ever step up from my 223 it'll be a .270. Keep up the excellent content. Love your work.!!

  • @matthewmoses4222
    @matthewmoses4222 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    If I may add, .
    243W and 7mm-08 don't tend to have excessive recoil, .308W is probably the maximum recoil most people can cope with in a hunting rifle.
    If you are thinking of tackling LARGER animals (say camels in the desert or scrub cattle) with the right bullet and shot placement you can take them down with a .308W, that said you don't want to be a novice trying to take on dangerous game without someone experienced to guide you.
    Don't overlook a sporterized .303 either, they have good knock down power and the recoil isn't too harsh.
    Finally if you don't want to reload and want easy access to ammunition, .308W and .243W is available just about anywhere for a reasonable price.
    PS: Practice with your rifle, prone, sitting, kneeling and standing, learn to use your sling (look up Hasty Sling for how to use one) and shoot at the range. Learn your bullet trajectory out to 200 yards or so and zero your rifle accordingly. Learn where the vital organs are of your target animal and how big that target area is and practice shooting groups smaller than that.
    Happy hunting.
    Great video, cheers!

    There are better calibers than. 243 for all round hunting duty that's for sure. 7mm 08, 6.5 creed, 6.5 swede, 308, .270,, pretty much all better than .243 at killing small to large-ish game. Tracking game sucks and not finding it is a massive bummer so don't go for a small Caliber like .243 if you don't have to

    “If your shooting deer with a 22, well your a dickhead” 😂
    I think as a new shooter for caliber my biggest questions are.. how cheap is the ammo, how far can I shoot it and can I hunt as big as a deer with it. The 7mm sounds good but what’s the ammo cost like 😂
    If I have to pay $2 per shot vs $1 per shot that’s a huge consideration when I need to get on the range and get my accuracy up before I try hunting. I was going to go with 22 but then I realized I can’t shoot anything but a fox and rabbit. which would be okay if there where tons of hunting spots for them, but I’m not sure. If I did get 22 I’d def have to get two rifles I think and I guess at least 270 for deer?

      30 06 and it's beautiful cartridge to shoot and for the distances we shoot it's more then enough but he's my twin so I wanted to outdo him so went the 300 winne lol! the 300 is an awesome round though so I'm not really disapointed, but I really love my 243 it's a round and id recommend it to anyone! what do you shoot mate?

      Yeah sounds good, i just went with the 30-06 because of the cost but i also have a .243

      Ross Cameron mate your set they are both awesome rounds! what's your gun of choice? mine are both tikka t3's and my Bros are sako, I can't see the point of spending that much on a fire arm but it was his money so go hard. I'd love a sako but tikka's rock.

      Yeah the tikkas are very good but i went with a ruger m77 hawkeye in .243 and a steyr pro hunter in 30-06. love the set trigger on the steyr and so so accurate puts 5 rounds in under half an inch

    How about using a 7x64 caliber? is that more powerful than a .308 or less?

    would you shoot an american elk with a 7mm08? and what grain ---do you think a 140 nosler all copper or do you think I need 160 grain--thanks

      @AussieBushHarvest  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't know anything about nosler rounds, and I wouldn't know much about elk hunting either but I shoot red and Sambar deer with 7,08s and 140 does the job. Those deer aren't much smaller than elk and in the case of Sambar would be just as tough

    Sorry old son but ive shot a red deer here in NSW with a 22 magnum. Yes it was a chance shot as I was sitting by a warren waiting for rabbits. But as returned man my preferences are....5.56 for local roo's and vermin. 7.62x51 dingos. 30 06 for anything bigger. as my father had travelled all over oz and killed everything including water buffalo with a 303 I still like that one as well

    do you still hunt with the 7mm08----i have hunted 300 win----just don't need the recoil---plus I always get with 100, 200 ,yards of game easy

    Any difference btween fake and genuine bipods

    • @AussieBushHarvest
      @AussieBushHarvest  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure bro, i've only ever owned genuine Harris bipods, but make sure the bipod you buy can "cant" from side to side on uneven surfaces (which are most hunting surfaces)

    tell hilldog range practice for sighting in an load testing not a rolled up swag as a rest. if you cant hit a patch of 19x19mm at 100m each time go home an start again. if you cant take your pres with you like i can to the hut for testing. you only need 3 shot groups if they dont touch at 100m they are no good
