  • You may have heard of alla prima painting, but what is it meant to be? Made famous by Impressionists who tried to quickly complete paintings outdoors. Working alla prima results in a loose, energetic painting filled with the essential spirit of the moment. This demonstration shows you how you can create a similar effect in the studio.

    Does the idea of completing a painting in one session inspire you?

    • @honeygirlsapiary
      @honeygirlsapiary 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it does. But I am very new to learning oil painting while in my early 40s...so it is all frustrating at this point lol. It would be nice to have some finished pieces instead of multiple unfinished pieces that give up on. Your videos along with a couple other’s are keeping me going and trying :)

    Alla prima can also be made with gentle strokes and thin layers if paint is rubbed into the canvas with bristle brush.

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, all styles benefit from this approach.

  • @SonnyBurnett2012

    Thx for the video. If alla prima doesnt cares about fat over lean, how to avoid paint cracking? Thx

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      With all the paint being fresh it is not a problem. The paint is drying at an even rate. Cracking is from thin, wet paint over thick semi-dry paint. It is now two layers of paint drying at different speeds in the wrong order.

    Love it. Last year, before I discovered you, I bought Winsor and Newton oils but hardly used them. Painting came out awful! Ha. Ready to try again with your great instruction. How do they compare with Rembrandt? And what do you use to clean brushes? Do you have separate brushes for oil and acrylic?

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These student paints are very good. In consistency and ease of use they are about the same. For pigment power and vibrancy Rembrandt are better. I use odorless turpentine for a final brush cleaning at the end of the day. Yes bristle brushes for oils. Synthetic brushes for acrylics.

    Does the painting dry longer this way compared with layer painting?

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you mean if you wait for each layer to dry first? Alla prima will be quicker overall in my expereince.

    What mediums do you use and how fo you apply it?

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A little white spirits to loosen the first layer, but otherwise none.

  • @callmedeno
    @callmedeno ปีที่แล้ว

    Are you using medium at the start or are the oil paints just naturally quite juicy? What brand would they be?

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  ปีที่แล้ว

      No medium. However a little white spirits for the drawing. The paints are soft and easy to use with bristle brushes. I am using Maimeri Classico.

  • @hhhjhffghbn

    Do i want keep my first layer wet when painting next layer above them .if i want to keep them wet ..how can i keep them wet if i am working with acrylics because acrylic dries fast.

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not that important with acrylics, but try to plan where you need to work softer edges and give those areas attention quicker. Get to know your paint and plan ahead.

    Hi.i have 2 question about Alla prima painting.you don't do any pencil sketch in alla prima painting?and what if you stop painting and come back some days later for completing the paint?then it's not alla prima anymore???

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can sketch or do any sort of preparation you like. Alla prima simply means completing the painting in one session. Coming back a few days later would not be alla prima.

    • @johnfreeman1623

      @@MalcolmDewey oh so the speciality of alla prima is painting wet on wet in one session.thank you for answering 🙏
