    Thank you so much, Malcolm!! You've given me great tips on what to focus on this year to help my paintings be looser...the very thing I continue to struggle with. You have simplified it yet again (maybe this time I won't wander off again) and within this video you have passed on a wealth of information. I plan on painting tomorrow and I am now going to pick something simple that interests me and apply the points you've made in this video.

    Thank you Malcolm. With this lovely video you touched on one of my New Years ideals, i.e. to paint more loosely and to STOP fiddling! I have just managed to break my own rule again when painting the "Red Building" reference recently! I do really need this "strengthening" of my resolve! Thanks again.

    Thank you very much, this is exactly what I needed right now! Maybe you can also enlighten me how you find your colors? I always end up overthinking things and try to match colors 1:1 with the reference. And in the end the painting looks just boring. Painting in gouache most

    • @MalcolmDewey

      I try to push the light more whereverI see it. Contrasts show up these opportunities.Also color temperature is very important. If its warm then make it look really warn. If cool then make that look and feel really cool. You find you color recipes over time too

    Such an important reminder to squint! I’ve been enjoying all of your videos and putting many of your tips into practice. I love the juicy brushstrokes you are able to achieve but for some reason my paint seems to dissolve into my glass pallet or it seems to get trapped in my brush and thins out on my painting surface. I’m wondering maybe it’s my paint? I’m using M Graham oils and a tiny bit of walnut oil as a medium just to get the paint less chunky. Any advice how to get around this? Thanks again Malcolm!

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Work in the medium (literally a few drops) into the paint with a knife. Make sure you have a good volume of paint on the palette - this is the biggest mistake made. The second tip is to really get a lot of paint on the brush. Most artists barely wet the brush with paint - especially from blocking in stage. You have to butter on the paint. One or two strokes - wipe the brush off then scoop up a new load of paint. Then you will learn how to move paint or know when to leave it alone. Avoid blending your strokes away if you can help it. If you have got paint left over, try and use it all in the foreground with big juicy brushstrokes.

    Hi Malcolm, I have been watching your fantastic videos for some time and hope you can help me… I need a white oil paint that is zinc and lead-free, that has LOW tinting strength (AND semi transparent if possible)… but mostly low tinting strength. Is there such a creature out there?? I’m at my wits end trying to find one, any help would be appreciated!!

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rembrandt make a transparent white that will do the trick. Even their zinc white is quite good in this respect but the transparent white sounds right.

    • @the_key_x
      @the_key_x 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MalcolmDewey Oh thank you for getting back to me - I have the Rembrandt transparent white, (LOVE REMBRANDT BRAND) was just worried about all the zinc/cracking/peeling info out there... but I will use it in small amounts and with medium. You have been a terrific wealth of info on your channel! Will be subscribing :)

      @@MalcolmDewey just discovered Williamsburg Porcelain White - apparently the Zinc Sulfide component of this pigment is not the same as Zinc Oxide and does not show embrittlement in any testing, so going to see if that does the trick ?

    Yes, a good and helpful video. Thank you. I have reservations about Clint Eastwood. I don't like the political import of American Sniper, although I have not watched it, just one or two bits of it. I know what it's about. Also, in Beguiled, early on, there is a scene which I think is ethically dubious. But, he is a good actor, no doubt. Still alive at 91!

    Do you find your suggestions fit better on a smaller canvas rather than, say, 16x20?

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, I try to follow the same approach no matter the size canvas. Larger brushes help and overall it makes the progress simpler and quicker.
