As a pianist, I can testify, that it’s not easy at all to find a decent page turner.
I played the viola in school because everyone else wanted the violin. Even in Jr high and high school, there were only three of us. I absolutely love the deep notes and tones so much better than the violin. The viola is a beautiful instrument, the alto sister. ( I'm looking at mine in her case now

I started playing the viola for the same reason and at the same time, Now I am a junior in high school, working to go to a prestigious music school to study viola performance or education. I love the instrument so much.

Same, I was actually the only viola player in my entire music school. When I entered the orchestra I was treated like some sort of endangered rare species XD I felt like a celebrity.

Im a violinst and I can somewhat input on this I dont think alot of us actually hate it but we give it a lot of shit like a younger brother. Personally I just find the sound to be a bit off in general I think has something to do with string length and sound box or smth.

I wouldn't say my new favorite, but it's definitely a nice sounding instrument. To be honest I would have never checked it out without them doing viola jokes all the time so I'm grateful for it lol

I have a lot of respect for the viola. I bought a viola case for my violin so nobody would steel my violin. Now to be serious, I am a amateur violinist who loves the sound of the viola. I have a number of viola CDs. I plan to purchase a viola in the near future. My favorite viola sonata is Henry Vieuxtemps Capriccio (unaccompanied solo). How can anybody listen to Vieuxtemps' Caprice and not fall in love with the viola. One last comment: My violin teacher's favorite string instrument was the viola.

You may be out of luck i know a lot of violinists who also play viola and may need an extra one.
My violin teacher was mainly a viola player too. Although he was quite proficient also on piano, flute and acoustic guitar.
Getting to grips with the Alto clef is tricky. I was getting nowhere until I bought the Suzuki book. It is really excellent and embraces playing the instrument without messing about with conversions.If you don't mind being treated like a 5 year old for a little while.
I always prefer viola over violin because of its heavier and mellower sound than its violin counterpart.

Saying that the viola is bad because it's like a "deep violin" is like saying a female alto singer is not as good/important as a soprano. The violin can often sound squeaky, jsut as a soprano can often sound too thin. Viola, like alto singers, add some depth without being too deep. It's warm, in my opinion.

To me, the viola is like a great pair of balanced headphones, rich sound, bass only when it's meant to be there, nails the highs. A violin is like a tinny pair of cheap in-ears.

I played viola for 3 years, and was the only viola player in my elementary, everyone prefer the violin and Cello because "viola wasn't important enough, and violin played more music" I still enjoyed the fact of choosing viola not knowing I would be the only violist, and having to play more passive being the only violist, in the front standing. Suddenly some girls did want to play viola only to stand upfront as well, and at rallies the boys could see them. My teacher was strict and believed your instrument should be connected to you not easily tossed to pick another.

The title of the piece is actually named as a sonata for piano and viola. The piano part is not an accompaniment, but at least an equal partner, if not more.
I got the feeling the piano part had the more challenging part while the viola part seemed less challenging (I'll probably eat my words if I get the music to play it though).

Fun fact: The viola was Mozart's favorite stringed instrument to play, though he was also proficient on the violin. If I had to venture a guess (as another autistic composer who started on violin and prefers the viola), it's because he enjoyed the vibrations of the lower notes on the viola, as they create a pleasant rumbling in the chest and spread like warmth. The higher notes on a violin do not satisfy in the same way.
That and he was also a huge fanboy of Haydn, who invented the string quartet, so Mozart would compose a lot of these quartets and play the viola to Haydn's violin.
And perhaps his father Leopold's occupation as a violin teacher grated on him when the two would fight, so the viola was a form of rebellion, as it was a very unpopular instrument to write solos for in Mozart's time. Sure to get under his father's skin.
These are all conjectures, though. But whatever the reason, Mozart adored the viola more than the violin, and so do I.

My uncle taught me to love Glinka. I wish he were alive to hear this recital. Although I studied the cello, the viola is truly the glory of the orchestra and the string ensemble. It represents the mean of all of the string instruments.
The viola is for those of us that love the cello but don't want to carry one around...

I used to think of the viola as a mini-cello, but not anymore. It's a beautiful instrument that stands on its own. It has an earthy warmth in the lower registers that the violin lacks, and a richness in the middle to higher tones that is simultaneously as dulcet as the violin and as velvety as the cello's. In other words, it has a bit of the best of both. A wonderful instrument that should be heard more in concert halls.

I live half an hour by car from Mikhail Glinka's house where he was born and spent his childhood. This place is wonderful, as is its music.

I kind of see the violin and Viola as soprano and alto, the viola gives more depth to everything, while the violin is more more higher and in some way shinier?

The worst are people saying that "the violin is screechy and sounds bad in wrong hands", every instrument sounds bad in wrong hands, or do you really think every violist sounds like that. It's all about practice.

As a cello player of five years, and friend of many more violas than violins, I have always loved the viola. I’ve always wanted to play it along with the cello. A viola is the perfect combo of high notes and low notes.
I love this! Magnificent! I play the viola and have for 40 years. Most folks think it's a violin. I'm not as good as this guy but it's a great company keeper in my old age. I'm always entertained.
i remember when i first started playing my teacher recommended i played violin bc of my size but i was set on playing viola and fell absolutely in love with it
I play viola and I once had a sub who hated the viola. But when I tell you after he heard me play the viola he bought a viola after school and wished he played it sooner. (I felt so proud that day I had gained another viola member)

This is why I do viola over violin any day. Much more rich, warm, and sultry. It's like the sweetness of chocolate compared to the candy of a violin.

The viola is the bullied kid in class. Just because nobody shows it love, doesn't mean it doesn't deserve love. Just because it gets picked last, doesn't mean it's an unworthy player. Just because it is kept in the sidelines, doesn't mean it lacks the capacity to shine.

I am a beginner viola player and I am obsessed with it! It may not sound good at first but with more practice muah!
When I was a child, I was part of the violin group. But I lost my chair one day. I thought my teacher had demoted me to viola. I soon loved playing the instrument. It spoke of feelings I didn’t wish to shout. Later my teacher told me I was too good for the violin. It takes a person not a puppet to play the viola.
