24 Hours in Amsterdam (we were SHOCKED)

  • We went into Amsterdam expecting it to just be a touristy party city, but what we discovered during our 24 hours there SHOCKED us! We found so much charm and culture to explore. We tasted savory Dutch pancakes, cruised the iconic canals with drinks in hand, visited quirky museums filled with cat art, went antique hunting down Spiegel Street, and even had garlic beer and garlic ice cream for dinner! From learning about tulip mania to seeing the beautiful St. Nicholas Church, the history and beauty of Amsterdam exceeded our expectations.

In my opinion as a Dutchy, the traditional pancake is the sweet one. Traditionally only with a topping of 'schenkstroop' which is a thick syrup, or icing suguar/powdered sugar.

Beg to differ. Home style is either sugar and cinnamon, cheese, or some kind of jam. Then rolled up and eaten out of hand, or using knife and fork when sitting at the table.

A Dutchie here! Though Amsterdam is nice and it's the place most tourist understandably go, The Netherlands has so much more to offer. Many if not most things found in Amsterdam you can also find in other cities around The Netherlands. There are many old medieval cities often far older than Amsterdam that have so much to offer. I was born and raised about 30km from Amsterdam in an own called Leiden which played a vital role in the history of the Netherlands. A fun fact: Leiden is the birthplace of Rembrand van Rijn. If you ever decide to come back to the Netherlands, instead of just going to Amsterdam rather take the time to visit cities such as Leiden, Delft Alkmaar, Utrecht etc etc. You'll be surprised that a.) it is often far cheaper, less touristy but have just as much to offer if not more. Amsterdam just has the name and don't get me wrong as I also love Amsterdam but do find it to focused on tourist.
If you love tulips, maybe next time visit the Keukenhof which is tulip heaven on steroids.
Another thing I would like to comment on is the fact that most people speak English in the Netherlands. Studies have shown that the Futch out of all non-native English-speaking nations speak the best English in the world and 90 to 95% of the people will gladly be able to keep a conversation going in English. We get English at school from a young age. I remember I was around 10 when English was introduced at school. Now, English is a compulsory language at most high schools aside from Dutch. The Dutch being traders by nature understand that the key to turn a trade into a success is that you need to learn the language. Last but not least, all non-Dutch movies and series except children's movies series subtitled instead of dubbed. This greatly helps with learning the language.
    Anyway, glad you enjoyed Amsterdam.

I have watched your videos for quite a while but realised today that I had never commented. I'm a Londoner by birth but have lived in Glasgow since 1992 but was visiting Poitiers (France) when you came to Glasgow so I didn't get to meet you. I lived briefly in The Netherlands in 1990, so I visited Amsterdam often but lived quite far away in a region called Limburg (very close to the German border). I think you gave an amazing overview of the city, trying different foods without focusing on the obvious landmarks etc. It wasn't featured in your video but I hope you managed to try the machine-operated fast-food chain called FEBO, they have small glass doors/windows where you insert a few Euro's and purchase warm hamburgers, Frikadallen, Nasi Goreng, Bami Goreng and other Dutch-Indo Chinese snacks. I love your wonderful, warm personalities and enjoy your vlogs immensely. Happy travels and thanks for your wonderful content xx

The Dutch (IMO) speak English with hardly "any" accent at all.
Before I retired, and about 25 years ago working as a Taxi Driver, I picked up a Fare (young man). during the journey and making small talk, he said he was off to Holland in a few days time. I said Oh! I've been a few times, and you should enjoy it. It was then that he said he was from the Netherlands, and it was his first time in the UK!!
You could have knocked me down with a feather, as he spoke just like a typical Londoner!....with absolutely no trace of a Dutch accent.
I think he must have watched too many episodes of "Eastenders" on TV...😅 and picked up on how we talk (in London) in particular.

Did you notice all of the shops advertized in English? They're here just for the tourists. The pancake one, the cheese one, all of the flower market.
Amsterdam has changed completely in the last two decades. It turned from a regular dutch city to a party city for tourists. It's something I regret.
Since I live here I know the few authentic shops that are left. The inner city has hardly any anymore. The rest of the city might fall prey to you well meaning people ;-)

We thought Amsterdam was so pretty and lots to do! Funny story ( Please dont judge us, we take Parenting very very seriously) But when we went, it was supposed to be just me and Hubby, but our son jumped in and said....Hey if im going to choose anyone to go Amsterdam with its you and Dad ( I panicked but said ok hes 19 and at least he will be with us) So off we go to one of the whacky backy places, and my hubby said, Im not trying it, will take you both back to hotel when youve tried a joint🤣 I explained to the girl we only wanted a mild joint as our son had never smoked anything in his life before (she was shocked🤣Anyway she gave me this joint but our son didnt know how to inhale, so my Hubby started showing him.....yep by time our son understood how to inhale my Hubby was stoned, grey and the look of panic on his face, all he kept saying to us was....im soooo ashamed, I was supposed to takecare of you 2, we stood him up and we got either side of him to get back to hotel, we then realised we had taken the turn into redlight district, so then my son is looking at all these women, were both now dragging my hubby through this one road, his feet had stopped working by now and all I wanted was churros n chocolate sauce! We finally seen a taxi because Hubby wanted nothing else but to go to bed, so we put him in it, gave taxi driver the address to hotel (who was laughin by the way at hubby) Me and our son went to find churros, walked back together laughin our heads off saying, some Hubby/Dad he is😂 Moral of this story is....dont expect a mild joint but expect to laugh! My son to this day who is now 29 says it was the best 3 day break hes had and wouldnt have wanted to go with anyone else other than his Parents🤣🤣🤣 Thankyou for reminding us how pretty Amsterdam is. Love Rose xxx

Hi guys, so I finally got all caught up with your videos from the last few months and really enjoyed them. I did notice that Jeremy roles his ankle a lot and I noticed how he walked. I do the exact same thing, my ankle rolls inward. It is called overpronation. He needs shoes for this. By far the best that I have found are Hoka brand shoes and they have specials ones just for this. Let me tell you, they are a life saver. They make such a huge difference keeping your ankle in line. I almost cried the first time I went out with them because I was not constantly rolling my ankle, because as you know, it is painful. I hope you see this post and look into those shoes for Jeremy.
Oh, and you HAVE to go to Oahu for a visit and stay at Aulani. Rent DVC points if you have to to save some money. It is well worth it and you will love it.

Your surprise about Amsterdam was entirely you own choice. Kudos to you!
You mostly avoided the touristy parts and chose some excellent alternatives. Good choice on the boat ride. Splendid choice on the garlic restaurant, made my mouth water.
A daring choice would have been to enter a cheese shop, put down 10 Euros, and ask the shop keeper to cut slices of cheese. Starting at very young and ending at very old cheese. You'd be amazed about the differences in smell, taste and structure.

if you return, get a hotel in haarlem its way cheeper and less touristy than you take the train to Amsterdam and in 15-18 minites you are at central station which is in the heart of Amsterdam as you might have noticed. the zeevaart museum (maritime museum) is a forgotten museum but so worth visiting, you can even board the replica of a ship from the spice trade in the 1600s. if you want to visit the van Gogh museum and/or the Anne Franck house make sure you reserve a spot online long before. there is a card you can get at the VVV in the white building across the central sation that grants you traveling with the puplic transport, give discount on museums and some restaurants. Thx for the tip of the garlic restaurant, i've not heard of it before, nice to learn about your own town from tourists who are really interested in the town and not the partiying. btw spiegel means mirror. thanks for sharing your experience. i loved it
