We get Hindi cinema’s top producers - Karan Johar, Ekta Kapoor, Ronnie Screwvala and Ritesh Sidhwani - to weigh in on what’s ailing the film business and why this year was a particularly bad year.

    I love how they're blaming the actors, the theaters and the audience. It's high time for a reality check. Someone has to tell them that they're the reason behind the deterioration of the Indian Cinema. It's not that people can't afford going to the theaters or it's too inconvenient. It's just that the content we find on the celluloids is much better than their mainstream commercial movies. People are now realizing what Good Cinema is.

      Perin Malde oh really???? Ppl understand good cinema??? Then plz tell me how judwaa2 golmaal return n badrinath like superb films made 200+ crore at box offc???

    • @perinmalde9076
      @perinmalde9076 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      tony Yes, those movies definitely did well on the box office. But on the other end of the spectrum, there are also movies like Trapped, Lipstick under my burkha and Newton which were not just loved by the critics but also a plethora of people. What I meant was, people have Started watching such movies and these 'not so commercial movies' will do better at the box office as well but it'll take some time. For now, the Start is brilliant.

    • @tony-pc4kd
      @tony-pc4kd 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Perin Malde trapped n newton both r commercially flop films.. Lipstick made 17-18crore n declared hit only bcoz its budget was 6-7crore.. .. Look at numbers... How can u say ppl r loving these films... Where mediocrity like judwaa2 golmal makes 200+crore within india.. Then atleast these films should make 50+ crore... Infact hit declared small budget entertaining films like bareilly k barfi n shubh mangal savdhan just made 30-35 crore.. R u serious?? If movie is so good n liked by audience as well then why just 30-35crore... In 2014 superhit film Queen also made just 80crore despite being such a entertaining family films.. It couldnt even cross 100cr mark... N avg films of akshay kumar like rustom toilet all easily cross 100crore... Audience is still dumb

      @tony-pc4kd 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sai Ashwin thats the question m asking why ppl watch online n dont go to theaters in same way they go for judwa2 badrinath shits... Question is also that why these films get so many less screens... And even if u see the number of screens still their box offc figures r very low... Fact is we as audience r still dumb we still like shit

      shlok goel The downfall jad already started way back in 2010-2011. And just because of ekta Kapoor. And now she is talking about content.
      Lipstick under my burkha was solely the idea of the director and Ekta was the last person she approached for production. She is just a producer of that film without any creative inputs and she is talking about content today.😏😏

      They complain, but they still go out an watch them because of immensity and quality of production value that those films have. Hollywood also has interesting writing going on for those remakes and sequels because they know that if you don't have good writing they won't make a dime. Take the Assasians Creed film for example, horrible writing for a reboot of a video game film - and it plummeted at the NA box office.

Kindly understand the fact that each and every frame in the movie showed is important. People's hard-earned money and 3 h of their day is invested in you Stop blaming actors, distribution, number of theaters and 'easily reachable digital content'. So i guess apart from the actors, the producers themselves are not astute enough, they don't have the capability to pick a good script out of a certain lot.

      Priya K whatever you said is so right. His movies make no sense whatsoever. The way he portrays rich people and colleges in his movies feels so surreal. But ae dil hai mushkil was just so unbearable for me to sit through. This movie had no story in the first place. I wish this movie was banned and we could have never gotten to watch such a shitty movie. Fawad Khan only had a 15 minute role and Aishwarya Rai was the worst part of ADHM! I hate Karan Johar for making ADHM. I have totally written him off after watching this shitty movie. The only director I like in Bollywood is Rajkumar Hirani. He never disappoints and his movies always have good content!

    As an indo-canadian I can kinda reference hollywood pretty well. Hollywood doesnt just bring people to theatres by event films. A movie like "IT" about a scary murder clown killing children isn't an event film but it went on to generate box office records. "IT" isn't a community film either(unless you consider community films to be about murder). So considering the first 15 mins used this so called hollywood template as an example makes no sense. The real reason why I and my parents dont go to theatres in canada where they do show hindi films is because- theres nothing worth watching! The last hindi film we saw together was Padmavati and before it Taray Zameen Par in theatres. These films had something unique to them at the time.
    Lastly- Karan refers to his keralite nurses as "malayam nurses"(on barkha dutts show). He doesn't give an f about respecting the southern parts. He just honestly respects the money.

    Majority of bollywood films that have worked were made out of scripts that were page turners.The content of the script is more imp than the imagery that the director shoots.Our stories are human stories. If u gonna pay 5 lakh to writers like ritesh has mentioned, you can not expect hindi films to survive the test of time. Bollywood isn't a dying industry. The successes of small content driven films like Hindi medium have proved the same. For the last 5 years these people are saying we have to empower are writers. My question is when the fuck r they planning to bring it in practice? I smell hypocrisy.

    I'm a movie maniac who watched more than 3000 movies. I've seen them all from Classics to European to 90's Hong Kong thrillers to Russian Arc's to Eric Rohmer to Bella Tarr. I analyze movies more than I perceive them. I'm more interested in 'Why that movie worked than how it worked'. When I watch a Stanley Kubrick movie I'm more interested in why that movie is so amazing than what camera angle he used to bring that effect.You know what happens when you watch a lot of depressing/ European cinema you feel like watching a stupid non-sensical movie. That when I have discovered 'Adam Sandler' movies. That was when I first saw 'Grown Ups'. Grown Ups is a terrible movie but it has a heart. When I knew that Grown Ups grossed $230 Million, I was shocked! Then I had a Adam Sandler film festival at my home & watched all his movies which most of the American critics call as 'terrible/ stupid' & found that they were indeed stupid but all of them had some connect/ charm. The only connection they have is real characters, realistic situations & a heart that connects to everyone. They may have terrible or stupidly written characters or scenes or comedy but if you see them deeply you can connect to those movies very easily. If you watch all Adam Sandler's movies you can see that most of the characters are guys working for a minimum wage & their lifestyle. It may be cliched but its real. Now that I'm studying in America, I can easily connect to most of the Adam Sandler movies. Most of the situations that I come across in America are all depicted in Adam Sandler movies. That is the reason for their success. The audience are easily connected to such movies. Look at all the clothes they wear in Adam Sandler movies they are so real. Look at the drinks characters have, most of the time its Budweiser. People may call it product placement but that's what most of the guys drink here. You can see Adam Sandler roaming around in Shorts & Sandals in his movies. Can you imagine an Indian star doing that?
    All this explanation I'm giving is a self-parable. When Karan Johar says medium range movies don't work in India it is because we never have real characters. If make movies about real characters it always has to be a movie about small town/ some dark stuff. Our Indian Filmmakers or Producers clearly miss something called reality. You can make an urban film with urban characters and their real-life situations. Again when they make something Urban real life again they want it to be something like 'Lunchbox'. If you want to make a commercially viable movie with Urban Backdrop with real characters I really recommend all those 4 producers to analyze Adam Sandler stuff. There is so much reality in that. The one thing that Americans have & our Indians lack is analysis. If you watch American films no matter how terrible they are they are so close to life. They are a slice of life. No glossy clothes, no sets, no fake dialogue. I mean the dialogue is so real. Dev D is real but again its not as real as something like 'Knocked Up!'. Most of the American movies are a slice of life. That is the main reason why 70% of the American films work & not because there are more theatres here in America. Most of our Indian movies are close to cliches. There is no reality anywhere. It's hard to imagine an American movie without a reference to Starbucks coffee or McDonalds or Burger King. You can see in most of the American movies that characters either work in those places or there is at least one character who works there. Can you imagine an Indian movie where the main character works at McDonald's/Starbucks? Don't we have McD/Starbucks in India? We do! Then why dont we ever see at least a single situation wherein the movie actually talks about what happens in the life of those cashiers/ drive-through employees in McD/ Starbucks. Because we don't care about them or we don't feel that they are interesting. If we adopt all this in our movies we'd be-be as successful as Hollywood. I mean I can write a book on all my observations.

      I think the characters are real on the script but as soon as they hire an A lister to play them it somehow comes as unreal. I felt it after watching so many hindi movies. The over the top persona of actors takes over their character. We don't cast the actors who suits the written character we cast the actors who can make money. For ex. If Titanic will be made in India we won't see debutant Leonardo as Jack but Hrithik Roshan as Jack.

    So they actually know the root of the problem and they still not willing to pay enough to screenwriter's and production. I think Trapped is the only Bollywood film this year I can say is HATKE from usual films (Haven't seen Newton yet) It is one the best movies I have ever seen . Apart from that, 2017 is another trash for Bollywood.
    On the other hand you get movies like Dunkirk, Blade runner 2049, Wind River, Wonder Woman and many many more.
    And some low Budget Masterpieces like A Ghost story, Lady Bird, Stronger, It etc.
    So the problem is not budget, problem is writing. And I don't understand why Anupama measures 2017 success or disaster based on fucking Box office record.

      @AD98. 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Sangbaran Dasgupta The original did as well. But that's the thing isn't it. That's exactly what the original commenter said that why measure the success of a movie or why determine whether it's a hit or a flop by the money it earns? Kermode said I don't care how much money it earned I'm just happy that it exists.

    • @AD98.
      @AD98. 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +utkarsh pant Blade runner and 2049 both were always destined to have no audience. Nolan wouldn't have been able to do shit and that comes from a Nolan fan. Why? Because people don't want to invest their brains in a 3 hour movie that naturally doesn't intrigue them. And Nolan could've done nothing about it because such is the nature of the film that blade runner is. I'm sure Nolan himself would say that he couldn't have done a better job than Denis.

      I honestly hate Ekta's brand of TV, in many ways that led to the intellectual collapse of Indian TV imo and hence the crap that we see today. But I also don't get the holier than thou attitude of commenters over here. Who made Ekta Kapoor Ekta Kapoor? It's the audience. There's a reason why her shows were wildly popular. So go home and blame your mothers & elders, they thoroughly enjoyed and still do to date all that Saas Bahu crap. Masala shows are also hits in the US (although they are a lot better than ours), and also there's no prime time soap operas only during daytime, but at the same there's an even bigger market for content driven shows like Breaking Bad, Mr Robot, etc. Do you know Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai was a big flop when it originally aired and had to be cancelled, only to become a cult hit in its reruns. Our audience is equally deserving of blame, if not more.

      Exactly! The problem is that the multiplex owners want those intervals to exist, so that public would move out to buy their overpriced samosas. Hence, they don't want to screen movies that lack an interval. In last few years, i only remember delhi belly not having an interval and the theaters still had to screen it. Aamir did it when other producers couldn't! If these producers form a unity and refrain from setting an interval instead of chit chatting here, then the theater owners would have to agree eventually and cut out the interval thing. Hopefully then the movie quality would get better.

Also, people with similar experiences who live in their luxurious bubbles cannot bring a more wholesome perspective while someone who has lived a fairly common life away from the limelight can provide us with perspective that common people can relate to.

      It's your point of view, But I really liked Deewar, Trishul and a lot of his other older movies. Yes, there are movies of his that I also don't like from the recent times, but it doesn't mean that all are crap.
      But, if you mean that you watched all of the 22 movies he directed and came to the conclusion that all 22 of them are crap then I think you probably were expecting something completely different, OR more realistically you have not watched many of his films and are just assuming this on the basis of the one or two movies you saw.

    Ekta is absolutely right. Content is the king now. Even Superstars like Salman and Shahrukh cannot bring in revenue if their content is subpar, as proven by Happy New Year Or Tubelight. This is where Akshay Kumar has revamped himself. He does content driven movies now. And they need to widen their horizon when it comes to medium. Television is down the drain and Digital is really booming when it comes to content and audience. Movie industry needs to quickly get their priorities straight if they want to survive the long haul. Also, people will watch all sorts of genre if they are given the option.

    As an avid cinema goer, 2016 and 2017 were highly disappointing. 2016 ruined the cinema-going experience for me so in 2017 I hardly went to any because I saw no incentive in going. These Bollywood hotshots need to realise that we the audience have matured up, we NEED and WANT high-quality content. I mean have you watched House of Cards and The Crown on Netflix? They're masterpieces (yes, they're tv shows), we need such high-quality content as an incentive to go to the cinemas. Why can't we make such shows and movies? Money isn't the problem. Can we have our own version of The Crown except maybe based on the life of Indira Gandhi? Why not?

    Such an enlightening discussion on industry dynamics! One way of cutting through this crisis, which I anticipate would grow over the years, as Ekta rightly foresees, is to make more realistic films, in the format of, say, Parinda. Either you go totally, out-and-out fantastical or remain close to reality, without compromising with commercial cinema's mandate of being gripping and entertaining.

    So I used to be a person who used to go to the theatres very often with my friends to watch a movie. Last year I had seen lots of films in the theatres. But sorry to say I had not watched a single film in the theatre this year, but I have watched lots of them at home on my phone,PC or TV. For a person like me who is not yet a working girl but just does a couple of tutions to get the pocket money I will think about budgeting. Now if I get a couple of movies for the price of a single tickit then I will be choosing the cheaper version. And after a whole day of college and remaining stuck in the traffic for hours the bed at home seems much more comfi than the padded seats in the theatre. To be presise I watched 4 film with my friend at home and many more alone after coming back home at night because as Mr.Ritesh said it takes an hour to reach the theatre where as it just takes 2 mints for my friend to hop into my house and vice-versa, so we three decide lets wait for some time it will be available soon. So guys have to give us the reason and the kick to travel all the way to theatre and you also have to find ways to stop us frm watching stuff on our phones soo early. Cuz lets face it we want to watch films and we absolutly love to watch films but most importantly we like to watch it with friends and family while we also save money 😉! Cuz everyone doesn't get a big paycheck after the end of the month.
    A films like Newton is the torch bearers to the fact that content wins over everything. Now if I have the threat that once its off the theatres it will not be available to me very soon through any medium I will have to run to the theatre irrespective of traffic and lathurgy!!

      Exactly the point in most other countries films are not that easily accessible outside the theatres. DVDs do come out but that after some time . So the films which are anticipated ones are watched by people no matter what the situation. If government and respective authorities can implement some sort of restrictions then I guess condition might improve. We can hope for the best

    2017 has been an awesome year for the Telugu film industry. Nearly a 50 films have been commercially successful and most of them got critical acclaim as well. Maybe audiences are ready to rush into the theatres anytime only if you give them good content. Hindi mainstream cinema is absolute garbage and audiences this year didn't hesitate to throw all of it out while its alternative and independent cinema zone is as good as always. 🙂

    1. Choice of guests- rajeevs's guests are way more interesting, just watch his directors roundtable2017. I have forgotten how many times i have seen these same set of people(karan/Ekta) talking. Even the guests seem bored!
    2. interesting conversation- Rajeevs choice of questions, the way he steers the whole interview is a delight for the audience,
    3.Professional approach and conduct of the interviewer-I am truly fed up with Anupama's fangirlish attitude towards its guests, 1 min into it and it puts you off grossly. I think she forgets, she is a journo and not just wife of a film director who is friends with the film industry.
