Hey man! I know you said you sold the truck about 2 years ago but I was hoping we could connect and chat about your experience on this project! I'm thinking of taking on something similar and wanted to know what all you encountered on the way!
I'm working up some ideas on another build going to try and keep the new firewall like you said and still put the old dash over the top of it that way all the brake mounts up like the factory did

Did the 2006 body mounts line up with the 1986 mounts? Great idea with the cab stretch btw, a lot better than cutting the frame.
No they didn't line up

So is it not easier to just use the square body and put the duramax into it?
You do you I've done both I said it's about the same depends if you want a newer frame or what you want
How hard would it be to use a 2004 2500hd with the 6.0 and a 86 short bed single cab i think it was a 1500 but had a Dana 60s put under it

How hard do you think it would have been to have kept most of the late model firewall and used it's dash gauges a/c controls etc. Vs what you did
Maybe easier😏 but wanted to have the dash looking fairly 1986

Can you use the 2005 1500 shortbox
The gas Chevy 1500 have a shorter short bed than the 2500 trucks have so I don't think it would work unless you extended the wheelbase
How hard is it to extend the cab?
It can be challenging for a first-timer like me you just have to get the welding technique down to where it doesn't Warp
