- I take a walk around Blackpool Town Centre on Black Eye Friday, otherwise known as Mad Friday. It's normally the busiest night for the ambulance service and police, due to it being the most popular night for end of year corporate & industrial parties.

Stayed in Blackpool from from 1997 to 2000, the locals were very friendly. The day we got there we asked a woman who was Washing her car for directions. She started to give us directions then said if you wait 5 mins I will drive yous there. We accepted and are still friends to this day even though we moved back to Scotland in 2000. Love the vids Stephen, Lancashire folk are nice friendly people.
I'm from Australia and loving the video it's making me feel cool
.
They do have money the weather puts em off so stay home get drunk
I've said it once I'll say it again, The Locals and Council have destroyed the place, stay away, guess you're into hanging around filthy gutters
Thanks for sharing Stephen great video merry Christmas to you😊
Hello Stephen you keep educating me, I’ve never heard the expression Black Eyed Friday before. I live in a London suburb and our high street is as dead as a door nail, over the last 5 or 6 years well over 50% of pubs have closed down. Society has changed beyond belief, but there we are. Enjoyed the video very much.
Glad you learned something Peter.
@@AWalkontheWildSideBlackpoolHi Stephen I watch your videos and I always leaning something I didn’t know. I was thinking of moving to Blackpool from the states but how are rent prices there? I’m from Chicago,Illinois USA and rental prices are at $3,500 a month what are they looking like out there?
@ What type of property? A typical 3 bedroom house would be around £1000 pcm.
Hi Stephen have a good Christmas and a happy new year. Thanks for all the Videos.
I remember Yates’ Wine Lodge and struggling to get to the bar because it was so crowded. We used to go in there before we went in The Palace nightclub in the 1990s. Great days xx
I totally agree with you Blackpool in the 90s was fab. Loved Yates and also Boardwalk and One Eleven club
Evening Stephen, back in the 70s & 80s when I was young at work, it was us organising the Xmas night out for everyone of all ages. Nowadays it's still my age group trying to organise a night out but your lucky if you get a couple of words out of the younger people before they're back on their phone, not interested unless everythings done for them, we've give up with them now. Remember trilogy when it was called jenks a long time ago, ha ha. Thanks for all the great videos during the year, all the best mate, cheers.
Have a wonderful Christmas Stephen and thank you for all the videos 😊
Happy Holidays to you Steve, congratulations on your very successful year.
Well deserved my friend.
Blackpool always used to be heaving this time of year. Lovely to see the photo of the old Wine Lodge. Those were the days.
I remember the old Yates as well. Ten minutes to get to the bar and then ten minutes to get served. Heaving
Looking quiet in town Stephen, I would have thought it would have been a lot busier. Guess its the cost of living these days. Thank you for another great video Stephen.
ey up, love all your videos!, your truly up there with the tower, piers, trams and pleasure beach. legend and icon of Blackpool. hope to bump into you one day. all the best Steven (mr Blackpool), regards Dan!
Blackpool is such a sad place now. I used to love this place the nights out in the eighties and nineties were fantastic.
Eric and Ernie were cycling around Blackpool on the 6th June 1963 as a promotion for their shows on the North Pier.
Just behind Yates's there was an arcade you could walk through. Had a Pet Shop with puppies in the window. Can still smell that puppy smell even now.
Thank you Stephen as always ,and merry Christmas 🎄.❄️🎄
Blimey Stephen it's so quiet its unbelievable, I remember being in Blackpool around Christmas time many years ago now and there were people everywhere, crowds of people. I can't believe how quiet it is. If anyone is out looking for someone to have a fight with then they're going to be disappointed. 🤣
I was in the Albert and lion on Thursday night and it was absolutely quiet only a few people in at 9:30 pm
Thanks again Stephen for another walk about vlog it looked quiet for a Friday night i don't think anywhere will get back to the way it used to be especially here in Wishaw as all the factories are closed down take care 👍
Thanks for the vidio Nice lights most stop in naw not as mad people park hear there and everywhere 🎉😊
Love this channel....its fantastic social commentary...planning on having a few days in Blackpool soon....keep up the good work.
Love your channel ❤
It is surprising how things have changed. I'm in my mid-30s and Mad Friday - every single year from 2006-2015, it was absolutely packed everywhere you would go. I went out in Manchester last night (albeit Saturday) and it was nowhere near as busy as I thought it would be.
Thank you for the update, quiet there. We call it mad Friday. Got very windy here now and heavy rain and cold.take care bye for now 😊x
Thanks for sharing Stephen 👍 have a blessed Christmas 🎄 😊
Hi Steve great video cost of living now not like the good old days when the beer was better and cheaper
Hi stephen my friend hope you are good my friend. Love your videos . Blackpool is still alive n kicking it will never change . Stay safe my friend n have a good christmas.
Good vid Steve merry Christmas and a happy new year for 2025 😊😊😊😊😊😊
Back to what I have said previously, far too many bars and takeaways in Blackpool now and most concentrated in one area. Years ago there were only so many pubs and clubs available, they were so busy and so lively. Remember going to Yates during the season and out of season, brilliant place but crikey it took ages to get served 😂. Xx
Love your videos.
Your video is 8pm most people don’t go out till a lot later. Also no one has any money right now, it’s Christmas and we have very expensive food and fuel bills
I’d add as well that a lot of people have stopped drinking as well, many younger people don’t drink like we did in the 90s. Blackpool Gay Village was very busy Friday night
Thanks
@@jacquimarshall9882 Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
Stephen I enjoy watching your channel. 😊 Thanks
We used to get the train from chorley to Blackpool and it was always packed. We'd start off in Yates and go across to merry England bar and they were heaving. There was a bar across from the tower that was downstairs but can't remember what it was called. It was called mad Friday in chorley but it's not the same as what it was. Alot of our town centre pubs have shut down and we have a lot of these micro brewery's now. Don't think the prices have helped either x
It was my birthday on Friday and I stayed at home. I'll celebrate in the new year when it's quieter
I'm in Belfast & in the 80's & 90's we always called the last Friday before Christmas " BLACKEYED FRIDAY " because people who didn't drink much went to the Christmas Dinners had a couple of pints & thought they were Rambo 😂😂 🍺🏥🚑🚑🚔
Thanks for the video Stephen. Manchester Black Friday was really quiet for a Friday night but the roadworks in and around Manchester doesn't make life easy at the moment. The price hikes on everything doesn't help either. Blackpool is busier than I thought it would be and Christmas by the sea is wonderful, we just need a bit less stormy weather to get more people in. Have a fantastic Christmas.👍😊😊
Thank you for that Stephen have a great Christmas and treat yourself.
Merry Christmas David.
Hi Stephen it is a lot more lively than it was last night. I have never heard of Black eyed Ftiday. Until now. Christmas by the sea looks awesome and very busy another good video thank you Stephen ❤
Like everywhere it’s gone
another great video stephen.😊😊
People don't have the money now we have the highest energy bills in the world everything now is a rip off
I was in Sheffield last night and the city centre was packed , couldn't get in most pubs or clubs ,so there is plenty of money about .
People do go out. They just don't want to go out in Blackpool. And who can blame them.
The country is awash with money, people just don’t wanna drink in Blackpool
Rip off Britain I say
People still have the money to spend on bags of powder ,botox, fireworks etc.
I left the UK in 1992. Unrecognizable is an understatement but a few pockets here and there.
thanks Stephen for another great video
Hi Stephen, another good video showing us around Blackpool. In Doncaster area we call it mad Friday and it is, mad I mean!
I thought Blackpool seemed quiet on the streets away from the promenade but busier on the front.
Take care Stephen and see you next time. Xxxx
It was so much busier years ago. I think it seems to be much quieter since the lockdowns 😊
Nice video, Stephen 👍👍
Sadly it’s pretty much the same anywhere now. Even here in my town the once buzzing town with heaving busy bars seams to be a thing of the day. I can remember fighting to try and get to the bar in my local pubs and clubs. We once had a Brannigans in Norwich city centre sadly it didn’t last and I believe they pretty much all closed however I did once visit the one in Manchester at the old Albert Hall. It was reputable very haunted and appeared on tv once the popular paranormal tv show “Most Haunted”. I remember it well and it was a beautiful building. It’s still there now but I believe it’s been turned into a concert venue or something. Nice walkabout again Stephen👌
Most Haunted was the biggest load of cobblers ever on TV, total fix from start to finish.
@ absolutely agree the 30 East Drive live episode was their downfall but even before that it was proven fake
Glad to hear someone that knows why it's called Black Friday, not the silly american sales.Big up to all the Casualty staff
Merry Christmas Stephen 🎉 well done with all your videos 👍 i have always wondered what the Gates are for on Queens Square ?? That Picture of Yates's is magic.... totally spoilt it now ......it looks like people think the same thats why it is not as welcoming. All the Best from South Wales 🏴 👍😎👍
Thanks Stephen great video merry Christmas 🎅 🎄
I used to love going in Rumours in the early 90's, always a top night and Brannigans also a great bar 🍻 thanks Stephen for rejogging my memory back to happier times 👍
Merry Christmas to you 🎄
Me and my wife went to Blackpool for this weekend and the wind and rain put us off going out otherwise we would gone from bar to bar.
I live in a small warwickshire town, pubs are same here, dead, 90's early 2000's you couldn't move in all of the pubs on a friday / saturday evening, those days are long gone
True beauty to the eye the old Yates, photo had life, n , character, looks too industrial, clinical even 🎉
Amazing as always Stephen
i remember it very well 1988 89 when i went round town Yates was my favourite place it was mobbed . went Brannigan's and the Fleece and also Swans . great memories of the past years .
Good place for beer monsters Stephen outside that shop beer bargain 🍺 🍺 😂😂😂
Great video
The death of the high street.
I remember when there were thousands of people out on mad Friday.
I used to go to Zone, Zone at the Venue, Sequins and other places around Blackpool and it was absolutely hammered in the 90s and early 00s.
Such a shame that people just don't go out now and all the good places are shut forever.
Ayup young Stephen I’m watching your video now as I’m having my baked beans and toast,,I don’t have on the toast cos I don’t like soggy toast. I like this dark damp video of extra large car parks. Nice and eery, and the sound. Of beer monsters . I’ve never been to Blackpool at night….and wouldn’t want to, strewth! Your video I’m watching now The atmosphere is coming through brilliant. Happy Christmas kiddo ! xx
Things have changed since all the Pubs and Clubs were shut down due to Covid. People who used to go out Pubbing or Clubbing on the weekend started to make their own fun. Garages were converted into Man caves inviting friends around for drinks. (Bring a bottle as the saying goes) most got used to drinking more at home. There is also the cost of a night on the town You'd be lucky to go home with change out of a Hundred Quid. And last but not least people now socialise more on social media with a 6pack to hand. Also Blackpool is not known as the cheapest place to go on a night out, a few Hen Party's etc. The shops are closing due to online buying and the Pubs are slowly following behind. The same goes for Restaurants during lock down many learned to cook at home and have stuck with it. The World is changing and so are peoples socialising habits.
spot on. Covid is the gift that keeps on giving. It seemed like our masters wanted us to stop having fun so they ordered us to destroy our way of life, and the economy. Predictable but the propaganda was strong for the vast majority.
Thank you for the very interesting videos all year Steve. Hope you'll have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year xxx
Merry Christmas Breda
Internet ruined childhoods .....
I remember Yates’s wine lodge thanks for sharing the photo with us 😊😊😊
1 week and I’ll be there can’t wait I booked this way too long ago can’t come quick enough
Yes Stephen, I remember Rumours & the old North Yates's & old Brannigans all great venues 👍
Merry Christmas Steve love your videos ❤❤❤
20 years ago, Blackpool was busier than that on any Thursday night.
Work christmas do's aren't what they used to be either. People can't be bothered/can't afford/ have busy lives or simply use social media instead of socialising.😢
It was pretty quiet in Stockport and Manchester too.
"Never Been" Looks Fab. Great Vlog Stephen
That’s really good to know sainsburys 3 hrs free car parking how long do you get in the other car park? Haven’t seen any beer monsters in a while 😂 it’s seems quite quiet there till the next one 😊
Thanks for the video Stephen it was a wet night and a Friday out off season l can remember Blackpool being much busy as it use too be with stag and Hen do’s l think it’s to do with the cost of living and not as many nightclubs when l came once when the Palace nightclub was there and walking up concrete Stairs where the Bridge was that’s no longer there.
Brannigans was a chain back in the day used to have one in Nottingham closed I think around year 2000 before that was called Madisons. I think their been a decline in festive drinking from about 2005 onwards and always used to organise a night on the town for works do etc good times, 90s were mad tho 😁
That's brought back some memories. New York New York was another Nottingham club back in the day.
Legend
GOOD EVENING A PIE AND A PINT DAYS ARE FINALLY FINISHED 😂😊😅
I enjoyed the first time visiting the saddle and enjoyed a couple of pints of Bass and was able to get discount off with my camra card
Good to see "Soul Suite" KTF Keeping The Faith. Blackpool is Known Internationally(I'm American) for the "Blackpool Mecca". One of the Original Northern Soul All Nighters.
Hi Stephen like your picture of Yates in the 1990 the building looked a lot better then than it does now.
They don't build things like they used to!
I'm in Scotland. we call it mad Friday, and it's the same up here (not just Friday. )Our town centre pubs are quiet, though different in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
In our part of Scotland it’s known as Black Friday
We used to call it 'Black Friday', but now it's 'Mad Friday'. Do you call it Black Eye Friday because you get punched in the eye?🤣 I was out in my town Friday and it was sooooo busy - from 5.00 pm onwards. Great atmosphere, brilliant. Merry Christmas to you and your viewers Stephen and look forward to the next one.❤
I have always lived in Lancashire (North East) and I've never ever heard it called Black Eyed Friday, I'm 68 years of age and it's always been Mad Friday
I remember going in the restaraunt under Yates Wine Lodge (Carriages) back in the day, great nights.
I remember the wine lodge went in a few times in the 70s think 1981 was the last time I went in I can remember coming out and going into the club next door steaming drunk 😂
have a good christmas and new year
Hi Stephen, Trilogy which was Rumours was that Mama and Papa Jenks? would of been late 70's , another great video , hope you all have a great Christmas.
Yes it was Pete back in the 70s
@@stevensmith7460 thanks 👍
Great picture of Yates Wine Lodge Stephen
They were the days from the Wine Lodge into Rumours or The Palace
Go for glory or go home
Have a great xmas Stephen , been a great year watching your blogs ❤
We called it mad Friday in Rotherham/Sheffield.
Do you remember the pet shop at the side of Yates? We got our Yorkie puppy from there in 1976 cost us £90 then, I was 11 years old, happy times😎
Ahh, the Tivoli pet shop. How could we forget the talking parrot.
A remember mad Friday, loved it,but older now,and times have changed,it be very busy alot of pla es,especially Manchester, even in halifax, love cosy warm in ,without been out,my opinion ❤
During Storm Darragh we were in our motorhome parked near to the football ground. What an experience that was. Thankfully no damage done. Can't wait to return in calmer weather !!
Thinking of a visit over Christmas, how much will be open ? Are the lights worth it this year as I'm already disappointed at the loss of the good trams.
Hi Stephen I'm coming to Blackpool 4th till 9th January at the Lyndene, won't be walking about at that time lol😂, if I see you around I will say hello
Always was Mad Friday in Wigan. And it used to be truly mad down King Street back in the day! xx
Christmas in Blackpool or anywhere really, is not the same as it was in the 60's and 70's I remember the town being packed over Christmas. The thing is today no one comes out until late people tend to drink at home and then head to town, whereas we used to be out from around 8.0pm as everything closed at 2 am. It's a minimum wage town and there is not the money around like there used to be.
Lots of people going to the pub Friday night local place in Blackpool
Black eye Friday made me 😂🤣😅. I don't think people have these staff do's as much as they used to. Prices for meals are stupid and small companies can't really afford a staff do. Most towns are lacking in places to go anyway. But you would have thought Blackpool would have been busier last night. Hope the wind and rain improves. It's been awful where I live today. Take care and enjoy the Christmas beer monsters. 🙏🏼🎄
Bit of an atmosphere😂, theres more on the moon ,what has happened to blackpool .
😂 .... Loved your comment.
Black eye Friday up here in Newcastle too
Hi Stephen, it’s on the news that Blackpool born footballer George Eastham has died aged 88. He was a member of Englands 1966 World Cup squad and played 18 matches for England. He was in the squad along with Jimmy Armfield, both players went to Arnold School. Can’t be many schools that can claim two England players at the same time, especially a school that plays rugby and not football.
Unfortunately I have not heard of his name. Jimmy Armfield was Blackpool through & through. Not like the footballers of today, who don't live anywhere near Blackpool, nor know anything about the town.
@@AWalkontheWildSideBlackpool
George Eastham was born in Blackpool and played mainly for Newcastle and Stoke.
He emigrated to South Africa and set up youth teams for black kids in opposition to the Apartheid regime at the time.
Surprising to remember that Blackpool had three footballers in the World Cup winning squad. Armfield and Eastham both born in Blackpool and Alan Ball was still on Blackpool’s books prior to his transfer to Everton.
