The difficult thing about this aria is that here one finds all the technical demands of Italian opera united in just under three minutes: Messa di voce, legato and crescendo skills, decrescendo and drama. Netrebko smoothes it all out rather than putting into notes the tension that Adriana offers her audience in the scene.
Allessio Barbi. The problem is not in comparing Anna' s singing with those in passato...The problem is about present, not past. How it happened that all these great masters of thepassato managed not to leave behind a single voice which is as good as theirs?! What this is telling to us about personal qualities of these people?! Most likely, as people they were very bad and their passato excused them only because personally everybody was very- very bad
Don't be stupid. The greatests sopranos have died. Callas, Sutherland, Sills , Nilsson and Caballe were the greatest. Netrebko is caterwauling as per usual
She lacks of colors and refinement of the phrases which in this aria are pretty important. The treatment is very linear while the importance of specific words is not reflected in her singing. Anyhow her timbre remains very warm, rich in harmonics and soft.
I agree with you. What often bothers me about her is, her middle and low registers always sound muffled, and a bit unaturally dark. It's often what singers do when trying to make the voice bigger. The higher Netrebko sings, the more I like the voice. This aria was, for me, a bit boring.
How true, but she did sing this beautifully. There are a few things she should attend to and one is to stop always wearing strapless gowns and she needs to do something with her hair; A good designer for her dresses and a good hair stylist would help her appearance after all she is an attractive mature woman. . .and with a lovely voice.
Arnaldo...Normally, those who say " a" shold say also " b" and " c" otherwice your statement is looking to me like quiet but stinky fart in the corner. If Anna is so bad, then who is good now? Not 50 years ago! With whom would you replace her? Give me at least 5 names...
@@로보티니콜라스 I' ve looked at her and found only standard soprano repertuir. I wonder how she would act in I Puritani, Manon, Anna Bolena, or Loengrin, Elexir Damore and Don Pascuale...Anna acted in all these and wonderfully!!
There are people here who know something about singing and they say what is wrong with Anna’s singing. There are others who do not know anything about opera and they do not explain why Anna sings well. They see a beautiful woman and for them that’s enough. Anna Netrebko is a false star. Listen to Mirella Freni, Raina Kabaivanska and others and you’ll understand why. Just compare. It’ll be enough.
I am a classical singer. I’m still studying and this was one of my pieces a year ago. I’m not at a professional level but I know this piece and I know about technique. Netrebko takes breaths in all the wrong places. There is no fluidity of phrasing. She doesn’t even finish the phrases - she cuts off before the end! Her Italian pronunciation is wrong. Her mid and low notes are muffled. She gets very pitchy at times. There’s so much wrong here. There isn’t even very much expression. Adriana Lecouvreur is an actress. She is singing about the beauty of the written word and how it speaks to her so much that when she performs it’s like her body is taken over by the words. There’s no nuance to Netrebko’s performance. There’s no difference between “mite” her “gioconda” or her “atroce”. This character is passionate and loves performing more than life. “Mi chiamo fedeltà”. My name is loyalty. She is loyal to the words that she speaks and is the humble servant “l’umile ancella” of the genius who created them. Ironically, Netrebko is not loyal to the music that Cilea composed. That first word “ecco” is written as pianissimo in the score. She definitely doesn’t stay faithful to that. There’s also no diminuendo on that last held note. It’s meant to stay at forte. This aria is literally about acting and expression and being faithful to the arts and Netrebko doesn’t have any of that in this performance
@@martinagoldring those are all excellent observations. if you are just studying voice and already notice all those errors, you have a chance to make it in the real world of opera. just don't lose the sharpness of attention to details. And, if interested, this would be a perfect example of how this aria (and many others) are supposed to be done. th-cam.com/video/-Dmk5X42Hi4/w-d-xo.html
Veronica Bell Thank you so much! That recording is just incredible. Caballé’s breath control is unreal. She sings that last note pianissimo but I put that down to interpretation. Considering the rest of her performance, Netrebko probably ran out of breath and decreased the dynamic to maintain the pitch. That recording of Caballé is exquisite. I can’t believe I haven’t heard it before! Thank you for linking it. She 100% understands how technique links to expression and her rendition is breath taking
@@martinagoldring you are right, that last note is supposed to be forte, I think Caballe just shows off here and I do find it at a bit self-indulgent even though she is my personal operatic goddess. that said, her berth control is astonishing, her musicality is exceptional, and she kind of blows it for the rest. she really is my go-to when it comes to iconic performances. and you think that last pianissimo is hard, try doing the beginning on once breath. that's all you need to know about the vocal technique. once you can do the same, they'll start writing about you in newspapers lol. Don't get me wrong, I love lots of singers of the past but Caballe is different from all of them and in my opinion, is still unmatched.

The media turned Paul Potts and Andrea Bocelli into a fantastic "opera stars". So they can easily turn Netrebko into the daughter of God. Stay tuned as Chief Jay Strongbow will be posthumously be considered the greatest Otello since Vickers

Pitch problems right from the beginning. Her Italian pronunciation is wrong. She took a breath at the wrong spot right in the middle of an important phrase. She doesn't have enough breath support. Her counting is way too behind the beat. She is all over the map as she does not keep a grounded sound and spin throughout her range. Ugly interpretation. Good enough for some people but not good enough for the Italians. She lacks bel canto technique and refinement.

You’d think with all the loud, deep, intrusive breaths she’s taking she could finish more than 2/3 of a phrase without gasping. I mean for gods sake even the tempo is increased which should make it easier. And the vocal placement when she starts isn’t correct. This is what everyone calls a “superstar” these days!? Just eww...
