Car insurance is another form of motoring tax which is exponentially rising to reduce affordability of driving. The irony will come when the very people who are pushing these measure will become a victim of their own short sightedness.

Its not 'Bristol' that is Banning Cars, it's the Government.
All Residential Council Tax is now Paid directly to HMRC and then
its allocated back to the respective Council with Strings attached.
      Those Strings are-
15 Minute Cities, ULEZ Zones, Carbon Capture, Net Zero and so
      on.
And the Government also ensures that the Money back is
less than was raised, so that the Council either makes more Cuts
or has to raise Charges on things like Parking, CiL Contributions, etc
      to maintain basic services.

The council in the westcountry city where I live have been using similar tactics for some years now in the city centre. First, they filled in the pedestrian subways and put pelicon crossings about every 50 metres or so, some roundabouts were replaced with traffic lights and surviving roundabouts had traffic lights installed. Add to this the ever increasing parking fees, and guess what happened - they were so successful at deterring cars from entering the city centre that masses of the shops went out of business or moved out of town. Our once bustling city centre became a bit of a ghost town, with our short-sighted council howling 😭 about the result of their actions.

Some years ago Bristol introduced a near blanket 20mph limit on the justification that it would reduce accidents. It didn't. The council then said it would cost too much the change it back. They have also put huge barriers up in heavily congested roads to make make them single lane and created unused wide cycle lanes . this near the main hospitals. Utter madness sick people going to hospital on a bike or walking!!!

I totally agree with you Andy about local councils putting up the costs of parking. I do wonder how much of the increase is down to financial incompetence😢😮as I've noticed that a number of local councils have overspending problems again and again and quite a number haven't had their end of years financial figures signed off by the appropriate office in question for a number of years in a row which begs the question of "How are they allowed to continue to operate in that financial situation". I get the impression that they are a law unto themselves. Terry. Plymouth

I can't believe how thick our councils are becoming. They make it difficult to get into towns by changing routes and lights where pedresrians seem to have immediate stopping power over traffic. As this slows down everything it makes all engines less efficient so increases polution. Now when you try to get out of towns you should be able to clear the area quickly - NO! More restrictions are applied with one ways and detours around blocked off roads, where the traffic used to flow beautifully. Or narrowed that much by needless cycle lanes they become dangerous to heavey lorries and on coming traffic. As there is going to be MORE Heavey traffic the roads should be getting wider not narrower with crossing 'bulges' and the latest, bulges in the road before roundabouts.

Or will the parking fee be a punishment just for owning and driving a car? If so what will the government be doing with the extra money. Because they seem to be making more and more schemes to take more and more money from us the people. But never do we see anything for the extra money taken. If anything we get less each year

The problem is also, they're not making any effort to increase access to public transport. They're taking more busses off routes and reducing how frequently they run. We live right on the edge of town and the busses have changed again. However, unless I'm alone, I can't use the bus. Trying to get my son in his wheelchair on an already bursting at the seams bus is impossible. It's about a 50 minute walk to town from here. Not too bad if the weather is nice but utterly miserable if it's tanking down. Cycling is no good because it's not all cycle path from here to town and the Duet (wheelchair in front cycle) is not allowed on British roads.

Here in Aberdeen, our residents permit costs around £150 a year (don't recall the exact figure, but it's around that somewhere give or take a quid or two). They have also decriminalised parking on yellow lines, meaning in effect the police won't take action, it's all down to the traffic wardens. Who go home at 8pm Monday-Saturday, so effectively anyone can park where they like after 8 and on Sundays 🙄

I live near Bristol, have done for 42 yrs. I used to regularly drive into the city to do my general shopping , but the council made so many stupid changes to the road system, the main shopping area became a neglected dump, nobody went there, and the once popular area is full of empty shops , and being demolished. Bristol was one of the first Cities to intoduce that idiotic scheme , to ban certain vehicles, not for clean air reasons as they claim, but because of 19 million quid they has raiseded . When Manchester announced it was doing away with a similar dodgy scheme, i hoped Bristol would follow, but having heard how much money can be yet screwed fom the motorist, they might change their mind again. P.S I'd like to know how business has been affected by this lunacy.
