My current character in my group's run of Shattered Obelisk is a Ranger with a Criminal background. It's led to him being confused for a Rogue a couple of times, but all of us have had interesting class/background mixes before. It's fun to come up with a unique mix for an interesting backstory and personality. And not get stuck in cliches. X3

Interesting (maybe) fact: healing magic does NOT in fact harm undead in base 5e rules! I only found this out when a player in one of my games brought it up. Of course being an old man of the RPG/Gaming scene I immediately added a house rule to effectively treat healing magic like it was in 3rd edition. You bet your ass casting heal on that vampire is going to ruin it's day!

AITA for not healing Story. Fun Fact. A buddy of mine was in a game back in the early 90's where they were all playing 'Dead' characters in a Plane of Death. The only way to actually get rid of an enemy was to use healing magic to ultimately 'Resurrect' that enemy back into their original plane.

PB is a great character concept that adds much needed depth and complexity to a class that most people characterize as simplistic. Annie either had some other axe to grind and chose 'rich girl' as an excuse or is simplistic herself while thinking she's intelligent. Considering Annie is an anarchist, my money is on simplistic. Either way, it would be a tragedy for the world of storytelling to lose PB over it.

As a DM with ADHD, let your players help you. Don't try to do everything on your own.
I have three regular players and two, who join sporadically. One manages the schedule. Another hosts.
It didn't work like that from the get go, they both basically offered to do it themselves when I shared, that these things are overwhelming to me. But I think, if I ever have a new group, I'll ask for this type of contribution right away.
There's really no reason the DM has to do everything on top of preparing and running the sessions.

There are even multiple ways a barbarian with the noble background could work in terms of story. Lost as a child, raised by wolves, later found and reintegrated into the noble family? Too lazy to actually train technical fighting (or knowledge) skills, but making up for it with raw physical talent? Second- or third-born to a noble family where only the oldest inherits, reduced expectations leading to the freedom to grow up running around the wilderness surrounding the family's country estate (and comfortable in both the wilds and high society as a result)? (That last one would also be an obvious option for noble + ranger or noble + druid, depending on the character's inclinations.)

My last character was a bit like the last one in the fact that he came off as a standard brutish half-orc barbarian that spoke broken common. Later on they find out he is a literal prince of the orcs on the continent. It was a fun reveal that everyone went crazy over. Especially when I revealed that he speaks broken common because he barely spoke it when the party met. He’s been learning as time went on and had been mostly guessing what everyone was saying. The kicker was that while he spoke poor common he sounded almost shakespearean in orcish. It became a running gag that orcish was the romance language of the lands. That all the best romance stories were filled with sexy orcish lovers who seduced with pretty foreign words like kizmaazz and zukkonmanuts.

I literally play as an Aasimar Barbarian path of the Berserker with a Noble background.
He's full of himself, egotistic, manipulative, strives for perfection in all the aspects of his life, mostly himself, he's envious of everyone around him, but reeaaaally deep, has a good heart, he's just traumatized, doesn't know any better.
The fact that he has all these negative qualities hasn't made it difficult to include him in the group, he's good with children since he's a religious figure and helps out around orphanages a lot, literally saved and adopted a kid with the party's elven druid-…
He can be caring, he's always tanking and protecting the group as much as he can, even if that means putting his life at risk. He's starting to learn what friendship is, that he doesn't have to be the strongest, most attractive, the richest, he doesn't have to be perfect to deserve respect, to deserve to live-… And of course, he still has a lot to process, but it's a beginning.
This noble barbarian is literally having such a deep redemption arc, trying to avoid a horrible fate that'll catch up to him if he does not correct his ways... But actually starting to *enjoy* being a better person-…
No, he's not evil, he's a true neutral, he'll do whatever benefits him, for better or for worst.
He's one of my favourite pcs till the moment, easily top 3, the dynamic is so interesting, no-one would expect a noble man with such a good reputation like him to have anger problems, such a nasty attitude and to literally fight out of pure rage.
He will enter a rage if he breaks a nail or you damage his eccentric clothes tho-…
So much potential, guys, try it out.
    Noble Barbarians.

In medieval England that was known as "landless knight" - sometimes (if they were disowned by their family) called "desdichado", which is basically "disappointment" in Latin. Interestingly, this eventually became a social class of its own in later centuries, with nobles living on the poverty line or below it in the 18th-19th century.

The amazing part about the last story is that I actually created a female high elf barbarian that was a noble. She was kidnapped as a child and at some point during her rescue, she ended up getting hit in the head and got brain damage, but no one realized it during the event. As a result, she would be prone to fits of rage when angered, and was no longer able to maintain facades like normal high society does. Led to believe she was cursed, she was sent away from her family to find a cure. They offered to help her in various ways from the shadows with the help of a signet ring, but in return, she had to disavow her family name and couldn't visit certain noble families for aid more than once. Now I can't wait to play her!😈

Suggestion for anxious DM: consider reading over a module for fun, and see if it inspires you to want to run it. Then try to run and see if being DM is the problem or if it's just the prep. Prepping for the first time is hard, let the module do the work and see if you like running the game or if that is less fun for you. If you like it, you can run more premade stuff until you get a feel for what kind of prep you want to do and then branch out into your own stuff.

It CAN work, really depends on the motive as to why they are travelling with the group.
    Any character can be:
    * From a Noble House that became destitute or outright destroyed by war and assets seized by the victor or by brigands, or seeking revenge against the ones who ruined the household as the motive for the journey
    * From a Noble House but cannot access wealth due to them leaving (Being Cast out or leaving of their own accord)
A character with wealth can use their finances as a plot device later on if there is a tough situation involving large sums of coin. (Buying a plot token/ship/army/etc) if the DM permits access to and is willing to allow the backstory to slide.

The DMing is not for me story... that is 100% a struggle with ADHD, so if you suspect you have it, that may very well be true. The description of what happens is 1 for 1 what most ADHD creatives suffer, myself included as a writer and artist. I promise it's not a death sentence for DMing!! Listen to Ginny D! Look into ways to cope with ADHD attention management. Look into a diagnosis and try medication, becauset let me tell you- It can be LIFE CHANGING.
I didn't get proper treatment for my ADHD until I was 35, even though I had a full diagnosis since I was in elementary school. Having medication has changed a lot about how I interact with my creativity as well as day to day life. It isn't a cure all, but it sure as hell can give you a leg up when you need it to help focus your mind. Especially on the things you love and WANT to do, but struggle to.

It was a lot of “enemy of my enemy is my friend” thing, and it was fun to play a character that would have to restrain himself to keep the trust of the party but then also convince them to do some shit because of that trust. God, I relate to the second story so much. Though, I've actually helped run a few literary rps with light dnd mechanics and absolutely loved it. I've had many players enjoy my npcs and compliment my descriptions. I figured actual dnd didn't sound too different and decided to give it a try with a smaller friend group. And it was very similar, for the most part. Except that with those literary rps I had anywhere from a few minutes to an entire day to type out a response. Going from that to having to come up with a response on the fly, in person.... Yeah, my npcs were mostly boring and descriptions were almost nonexistent because my mind just completely shut down through the entire session. I also didn't fully understand combat at the time and it ended with a tpk. I did do a second session, having the previous characters revived as it was a good excuse to introduce them to the mysterious god I wanted to set up. That was probably the only time I had good descriptions of a scene cause I had time to write it before the session began. But by the middle of the session, I was back to fumbling around and ended up just dropping the campaign cause it was giving me anxiety
Earlier this year, though, my friend group circled back around to dnd and another friend offered to dm a new campaign in pathfinder. She's doing SO much better than me and it's been a lot of fun so far! Relating back to the first comment of the video, we actually do have a mix of good and evil in the party, but it's a nice balance of lawful evil, neutral good, and chaotic neutral. They're being forced to work together and the chaotic neutral does a good job of playing devil's advocate for both sides. It actually led to a fun scenario a few sessions ago where the evil sorcerer tried to convince us not to trust this npc, who the good paladin did indeed detect as evil. But my character(chaotic investigator) pointed out that our sorcerer was way more evil, so why shouldn't we accept his help getting to where we need to be? So we went with him, the sorcerer tried to murder him, and he turned out to be the big bad of the session

To the "Dm isn't for me" OP! I also feel the same! I have all these ideas and such, yet I enjoy being an Editor (helping IMPROVE others ideas by aiding in seeing what works and doesn't! Or even looking at disappointing material and games that had what it took and adding my two cents to them LOL) on my free time and "a consumer" which isn't a bad thing! Respect those who can make the stuff I consume! Use to have the FLAIR back in my 20's and early 30's but now mid late 30's I just ain't feeling it anymore and like just enjoying what other's make! Nothing wrong with that! You can say your better then me and others cause YOU AT LEAST TRIED! And that's all that can be said!

For the person who doesn't think DMing is for them - have you tried text roleplaying? TTRPGs aren't the ONLY way to roleplay / write collaboratively! I've been text RPing since childhood, before I even knew what D&D is. It's a lot more flexible, there are no specific rules, and you can do it at whatever pace you and your RP partner(s) need.

19:13 Same thing happened with the end to a campaign I was in with a vampire lord. The campaign had been dragging on for longer than anyone wanted because of scheduling issues so we said fuck it, we win or we don't. We won't delay anymore. I, as a cleric, prepared all these plans for dealing with a vampire and the actual fight was so many leagues past reasonable I just checked out. Like the vampire lord was several THOUSAND feet in the air out of range. I managed to get a gradual fly going with some help while an npc was distracting him. I tried daylight, holy water, and even stakes but nothing damaged him. Literally the only thing the DM allowed to work was Wish spells cast via one character's homebrew version of the deck of many things that the Dm had given him recently and it took FIVE of them to finally win the day. 😒

The last story strikes a cord as I have my own princess Barbarian (she's a dragon girl that's seeking to free her currently fallen empire's capital that has been overrun by the cult the campaign is centered around.)
So mine is more royal minded, but her royalty status doesn't really affect the interactions and such, outside of one of the players that is sometimes abrasive for no real reason outside of "Oh he doesn't trust authority." It doesn't come up too often, I'd say it's only 5% of interaction with them, but when they happen, they usually either really rub me the wrong way or really mess up my interaction with an npc. So minor compared to the story, but still annoying.

I have had several dhampir characters scream in pain and pass out from accidental burst heals given without warning. :)
Dhampir Monk wakes up: “Ugh. Okay, I’m not sure what that last trap was that knocked me out, but thanks for healing me back to consciousness. Man, I still feel wiped.”
Cleric (obviously feeling guilty): “No problem. I uh… maybe one more spell to help.”
Dhampir (partially oblivious): “Diamond dust? Why are you casting restoration?”
    Cleric: “No reason! No reason!”
Dhampir: “And why is your diamond case lying there open and empty!?!”
    Cleric (panicking): “No reason!”
    -----
Added note: I couldn’t get over the initials of P.B. in the last story. I have a character named Pavana Brandesh who goes by P.B. as well. And yes, once or twice she has been called Peanut Butter. :)
But if Annie wanted to stick with “what my character would do” then have PB punch her out. As a barbarian, it’s what your character would do. :) Even if it means a character’s development regresses. In the end, it makes the arc have up and downs rather than a straight line. Much more realistic and interesting.
That said, I actually enjoy it when there is internal friction in a party. More RP potential. But Annie strong arming the group is where I draw the line. She needs to go down.

    Warning, long comment ahead:
So I've been binging these videos since I found the channel the other day and Crispy has completely renewed my desire to play D&D. I've always wanted to but have severely limited experience. I think I've played maybe two or three sessions tops, and have never played a full campaign. And even thet was back in college, like 9 years ago.
Anyway, I've always been afraid to reach out to people in order to play. Recently, between this and picking up BG3 (surprise), I find myself really really wanting to find a group to play with. Somehow, hearing horror stories reassured me that I can't possibly be as bad as some of these people that others talk about. I never like putting others down to attempt and lift others up, but in this case it does make me feel a bit better, even with my general inexperience.
That being said, I keep scrolling LFG and I can't bring myself to try with any of the groups people post about. On one hand it's major anxiety. I struggle super hard talking to new folks. But, I've been rping for over a decade, and I want so badly to give it a shot. I simply need to get over the hurdle of anxiety and reach out. Working overnights does make me scheduling someone difficult, though.
No real point to this comment, I just wanted to get it out there. Love the videos, Crispy! If anyone read this far, I hope you have a good day!
Tldr; I have anxiety and want to play D&D. These horror stories have helped me feel better about my inexperience and I'm hoping to find a game eventually. :D

Boy, this chick who didn't like that noble background barbarian would have hated my character. Sci-fi setting, and she's the Crown Princess of her home colony. Second in command of an entire star system. But, the twist on my princess is, she actively hates her royal title and all the pampering that comes with it. I partially based her on Prince Akeem from Coming To America. She actively left her home system to get away from it, and so is as poor as the rest of the party, since she cut herself off from the royal trust fund. She doesn't plan to go home for at least several years until her little sister is of age and she can renounce her claim to the throne and be done with it. Though I fully expect my GM to force her back there prematurely at some point. My princess is also a martial class in a homebrew system. Sword and Shield at close range and a shotgun or rifle at long range.
In the unlikely event the girl who made that Noble Barbarian girl reads my comment, try her again with another group. It sounds like a great character concept.

She got so much backlash she took it down almost immediately but if you are curious look up the TH-cam video Two Professional Writer's React to Lily Orchard's "Simple Writing Tips" by the channel "We Are Not Alive". It's long but you can just skip around or trawl through the comments for the choicest bits, such as "don't turn comedy into drama, it annoys people" or "characters don't have sexual agency, you made them that way".
