My sister, 2 friends and myself met Sid! My aunt lived in Minn. & had always promised to take us there. This was back in the late 70's & we were all high school & college students and avid sewers thanks to my grandmum. We had originally planned to shop one day there and see other sights the other days of our visit. Nope, it took us 4 days to get through the store.. as my aunt had projected. We'd traveled by train because it was both cheaper & at that time very inexpensive to ship boxes with you on the train. My aunt knew Sid & introduced us - oh gosh, he was hilarious & brought my aunt a sandwich when it was lunchtime & she wanted to go eat.. and we couldn't pull ourselves away. We spent every last dime we had there & our parents had to wire us $$ to ship it back home & for food on the trip back. We came home with boxes & boxes of fabrics.
Zoe, that is the best story! That must have been so much fun, and I’d love to have seen what it looked like in the late 70s. That sounds like something Sid would have done 😀 How long did it take you to sew through those boxes of fabric
Went to the Brooklyn Park this weekend. Let’s be clear the selection of fabric is unending especially those who make costumes, show clothes, etc. However for the average quilter and sewer the fabric is not cheap/inexpensive by any means. Basically it’s marked up to mark down. Most quilting cotton can be found at a much lower cost. We went anticipating incredible prices, none to be found.
Hi Sharon. I loved S R Harris. It is a dream store. Yes Mr Harris is a hoot. So kind & helpful. I went in the BP location a few weeks ago when we were back in MN. It is overwhelming but you are right go in with a plan. Happy shopping.
Love SRHarris! I was there last Friday. I’ve shopped there for over 40 years. We used to have to call when we reached the Metro to see where they were located. Sid use to move around the Metro until they housed at the current location. I love the remnant bins! So much fun.
Thanks for the tour! I’m a Central MN girl that has SR Harris on my “to do” list. A quilting friend of mine goes there frequently and raves about the place.
That’s so true! I can’t even tell you how many times I have had some thing in my shopping cart, decided to put it back, and then wished I had purchased it. Or, you don’t put it in your cart because you’re so sure you’ll remember to go back and get it, and you forget. 😂
Wowzerz! It looks like fabric heaven there, there’s nothing even remotely as good where I live in the U.K and it’d be almost worth the price of a plane ticket to get to shop there at those prices 😩 I did enjoy having a look around through your eyes even though I’d love a rummage of my own, thank you!
I have been going to SR Harris for over 25 years. It is very true to have an idea of what you are looking for before you go in. It can be very overwhelming for some people - not me - I could browse for hours and come up with ideas - mostly quilting now. I have encountered Sid many times. He is such a salesman - trying to talk me into fabric "I need," but also could tell you exactly where to find what you did need.
It is such a treasure, isn’t it? I agree, he always tried to talk you into fabric you “needed“ ha ha. I could also browse for hours, and when we lived in the Twin Cities, I would do so. However, now when we visit the area, our time is so limited that I’m grateful when I get an hour in the store
This is one of the reasons I need to move to the US, 😂 once I get in here, I'll just sit on the floor and shed some happy tears first before I start going around. There's no fabric store as half as this in my country
Sometimes pulling a bolt out is like pulling a thread in a sleeve, suddenly the whole thing has unraveled and you've got half the aisle on the floor. Found some really good deals that way.
I think I discovered it around the early 90s or late 80s. Surprised to see they still use the stickers! No high tec there! I moved away 15 years ago, and now live about a 40 minute drive to the Bursnville store, which is a bit smaller but still impressive. Looking forward to your video on that store.
You know, I never even thought about that. But it is surprising They still use the same sticker for marking the cut fabric. The one thing that changed was they now provide decent scissors. Do you remember when you used to bring your own scissors, because the ones they provided were so dull they wouldn’t cut the fabric? I lived closer to the Burnsville location, and was really happy when that one opened. My preference is still the large warehouse though! And when we visit the area, I always make sure to stop by.
Thanks Sharon, never heard of SR Harris--thanks! But they don't have online by mail? That place is awesome, wish I lived closer. Clearly you need to know what you are shopping. One hour would not be enough. Wish the Craftsy online was still t
Oh yeah, it’s definitely not for everybody. I have shopped there for so long I guess I no longer how it can appear messy, plus I kinda like the thrill of the hunt 😀 Thanks for watching, and commenting!
Oh believe me, it’s hard, and there’s always fabric I put back that I wish I had purchased. I don’t remember for sure but I think the bolt price was listed around $14 so it’d be $7 a yard.
The only two locations they have are in Minnesota, Brooklyn, Park, and Burnsville. Depending on where you are located in Iowa Burnsville, it’s not too far of a drive. I hope you have a chance to go there and find lots of treasures!
Hi, sorry for the delay. They don’t really have a clearance section as all of their fabrics are 50% off of the price marked. On occasion, they will have some “clearance“ fabrics, that are marked down even further, and those are the price marked. You do not take an additional discount. Because it’s a warehouse, and they buy a lot of deadstock, the selection varies frequently.
You only get an hour to go to SR Harris when you come to MN??? Girl, next time you come, let your peeps know you are needing more time to conduct business, throw them my name for validity and then shop away. I've never gotten in and out of SR in an hour. NEVER!
What a wonderful place! I wouldn't mind getting lost there😁

Hi Laurel! Since you have a friend that already raves about it, you know that it’s going to be fabulous. Have you made it there yet?
@@SharonSews Not yet, but it’s on my winter bucket list.
I love SR Harris. I have found that if something catches my eye, I should buy it since it probably won't be there the next time I visit.
That’s so true! I can’t even tell you how many times I have had some thing in my shopping cart, decided to put it back, and then wished I had purchased it. Or, you don’t put it in your cart because you’re so sure you’ll remember to go back and get it, and you forget. 😂
Wow. I feel like I need to make a road trip!!!!!
Yes! You Should - we should do a Sewing TH-cam meet up someday at SR Harris 😍

I'm going to visit for my birthday very soon! Can't wait!
What a fun birthday trip! Will it be your first time there? Either way, enjoy ❤️
@@SharonSews yes but now it's suppose to snow so maybe in a few days. Like I need more material haha!
Right down the road from my home, and one of favorite resources.
How wonderful for you to live so close!

Looks familiar! I would never have survived if not for your help. I'd love to go back again!
Loved going to SRHarris when we lived in MN. Great place!
I agree! One of the things that I miss about living in MN.
Ressy used to get fabric for the F&N co-op from Scott. I have lots of treasures that came from S.R. Harris.
Holy cow! That's some place. I'd love to go even though I know I'd get overwhelmed. Thanks so much for the tour. I really enjoyed that.
Great pics off your past makes.. love the hair too
Very well put together video. I appreciate the effort and extra information included.
I am so jealous, my country has 3 fabric stores and you can never find what you want...Thanks for sharing.
Oh I’m sad for you. It’s hard when you love creating but have limited resources easily available.
I found you from Jen’s video on her trip to SRHARRIS. New subscriber.

I have bought quite a few athletic fabrics there and a few beautiful cottons!
They also have a lot of the polar Tex brand fleece
Best selection of batiks in the area
Absolutely! SR Harris never disappoints.

Love the place over the years...but do wish I could order on line
I agree! I miss shopping there and wish they’d offer online shopping
I'm like a kid in a candy store when I go to the big warehouse!
I go in with a dollar amount budget otherwise I'd end up with 2 carts full!
That’s a great way to describe it! I also have a set budget because it’s so easy to want to bring it all home 🤣
Thnks for sharing .
First time hearing about SR Harris
Well, thank you for watching the video, and I really hope you have a chance to check it out sometime!
Oh, goodness. I wouldn't be able to deal with the mess. Still, I can tell it's a dream location for most visitors.
Oh yeah, it’s definitely not for everybody. I have shopped there for so long I guess I no longer how it can appear messy, plus I kinda like the thrill of the hunt 😀
Thanks for watching, and commenting!
I could not imagine walking into a place like that! How in the world would you choose! But like u said…take a list and have a plan before you walk in.
Oh i want to go!!!
Is there a ladder to get to the top?
No but there should be! You need to locate one if the staff and they help you get fabric that’s up high.
Not near enough to me - wish they had mail order (like the best quilting fabric place in my new hometown - Hancock of Paducah! 😊)
I wish they had mail order also! I have never been to Hancock of Paducah. That will have to go on my bucket list 😀
Oh. That would be so hard to only have 1 hour there! Do you remember what price the quilting cottons ended up being?
Oh believe me, it’s hard, and there’s always fabric I put back that I wish I had purchased. I don’t remember for sure but I think the bolt price was listed around $14 so it’d be $7 a yard.
Do they have any fabric stores as good as this one in New Jersey?
How do you limit yourself to an hour? And did you ever feel as if those high bunkers of fabric would topple into the aisle as you went down them?
Thinking trip time... Iowa location?
The only two locations they have are in Minnesota, Brooklyn, Park, and Burnsville. Depending on where you are located in Iowa Burnsville, it’s not too far of a drive. I hope you have a chance to go there and find lots of treasures!
Is there a clearance or a bargain section?

I know! It's fabulous but overwhelming if you don't like to shop in that type of environment.
Am interested.

Hahaha! Perfect! I didn’t realize how fortunate I was when we lived there and I could pop in and spend hours shopping.
