1:55 *sigh* Nobody ever mentions that the level itself is called Hell Valley internally. Just saying they're called "Hell Valley Trees" without context makes them seem more mysterious than they are…
In addition, In the Japanese version of SMG1, Melty Molten Galaxy was called "Hell Prominence Galaxy" (in English rendered with Japanese characters), and while the other European versions kept the same meaning, the English name was completely different (same with lots of other galaxy names). If you just know the English name, the connection isn't obvious. The Japanese name is of course reflected in SMG1's files for that galaxy.
Considering SMG2 started development early as "SMG More" (in fact that's still the internal name for SMG2), an expansion pack of the existing SMG1... Shiverburn Galaxy ("Frozen Lava Galaxy", in Japanese) was probably initially based on Melty Molten Galaxy (sharing the same theme) but changed after that to be its own thing.
Remember Club Nintendo? I got a SMG1 OST CD from it and if played on Windows Media Player, the names are different and Melty Molten's Theme was called Hell's Prominence so...... guess Japanese people arent afraid of triggering hardcore christians
Bowser's back is also in the first game because Nintendo loves to reuse this model.
It's from Sunshine, and they've reused it in these two games, 3D World & Mario Party 10, they've just done texture and shader work to make it look better, but the model itself is still the same quality. I recognize those hexagonal fingertips everywhere. xD
The hands you see on the gamepad for MP10 are different though which is why they're smoother & higher quality.

Super Mario Galaxy 2, one of the best memories i have. I even got mine from the long gone blockbuster! I have had this game for many years now! It is great to be seeing some secrets I have never known about the game until now. I did know about the creepy faces on the cliffs though!

Great video as usual! And I liked the end card animation, except for that text overlayed over it. It's a very default font and doesn't really fit it.
I think at some point in the future you should consider doing Kirby's Return to Dreamland. It's a 2.5D game, but the backgrounds look so cool and are mostly 3D modeled, tons of boundary break potential.
For instance, during one of the boss fights, there is a cave in the background that you can't see inside. (Most likely nothing in it but still cool to take a look)
It would also be interesting to see what the Whispy Woods boss looks like from another perspective, as he seems to have some visual trickery going on.

When I first got this game I thought that cartoony 3D graphics couldn't possibly get any better, but now that we have Odyssey, I can actually tell little details and imperfections that have gotten improved through the years. It's really cool

Have you tried boundary breaking New Super Mario Bros. Wii? I've been interested in trying it myself for a long time, but I haven't been able to find a rom for it online for some reason. I could have sworn these things used to be much easier to find.

Some games use seemingly 2D main menus. Those often turn out to be 3D as well.
vissova yeah the character models are. The majority of the world isn't. Why would you model a 3d world if you only ever see one side? other than the characters and like a few assests the entire world is 2d, there isnt anything there to look at,

There are a lot of games that render 3D models in ways you'd never even know without boundary breaking.
vissova yeah they render assests. maybe put objects in the world ahead of time. but you don't design an entire video game world in full 3d blocks, then use 1 side. its the same engine as mario maker and its obvious in that they use 2d assests. that would be the biggest waste of time to make a block world, then use 1 of 6 sides. essentially using 1/6th of everything you make in a game. thats just a waste, especially for a triple A game from a triple A company, nintendo would never allow that waste of resource and money. theres a difference between adding detail for the off chance someone peaks at a weird angle, versus a fixed angle that the player physically can't change, there is no way for the player to change what they can and can't see.

Well, the particular hollowed-out structures on the turrets/corner towers at the end would be called ridge turrets (baby towers on rooves without a foundation) with the exception that they are placed on the tiled spire. I found a very interesting term that describes this type of structure in German, and a direct translation would be "tower hood", but that's pretty misleading, since the spire is already the "hood"/roof of the tower, and this structure is like an extension of it. By the way, you don't usually find that on Castle towers at all, it's much more of a church thing.

My theory on the hellvally trees are that they are peach, kamek, bowser jr and a koopa/goomba. Peach wanted to see mario, and bowser, kind as he is, grants that wish and sends them to that galaxy. Bowser jr, kamek and the koopa are there as a guard so peach doesnt escape.
