The fact that 55-year-old Capaldi was more active in one episode than Ncuti was in the whole series speaks volumes for the lack of characterisation the Fifteenth Doctor has suffered from since his inception.

How could he have characterization as The Doctor, when he isn't him, just like Whitaker wasn't him.

    • @Goomsies
      @Goomsies 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +24

The thing is, it feels like he could do a good Doctor. I don't think the fact that he's gay or black should have to take away from it. The Doctor changes appearance and parts of his personality every time he regenerates, but there's always a sort of core personality you can detect in everyone up until Whitaker.
Maybe it's faux pas to use gendered terms, but I would say he was always this hugely masculine presence in the show. He's always ready to take care of everybody. He always knows what needs to be done in any situation. Sometimes he's confused, but you can always see there's something cooking in his mind, like he's just one clue away from figuring out everything. You get the feeling that he's seen it all, done it all, and is ready for anything. But now he's letting his sexual desires get in the way of his friends' safety? He's staring in horror while he gets dragged away from a scary alien? Ncuti doesn't project that masculinity that the Doctor had. It's like the writers thought they had to make him more emotional just because of the actor they chose.
With these last two iterations, there's this clear goal of emasculating the Doctor. They want him more confused, more unsure, more useless, so other characters can steal the spotlight without trying. It's just so clearly out of resonance with how he used to be written that it's jarring and unpleasant.

Dude, grow vine green beans! They're SUPER easy to grow, and meaty as heck! And you just save a couple beans from each year to grow next year; it's great!
Basil is another easy one. I grabbed a kit from the dollar store and they grew like CRAZY. I had to get them some decent-sized pots pretty quick. It made our backyard smell soooo nice!
Mammoth sunflowers are also fun if you like to look at moths: When the heads were fully grown and drooped down, moths would sleep on them overnight. At least I think they were sleeping: They would be super chill, not moving around and letting us get really close. Moths are adorable when they aren't flying around.
The only downside to mammoths is how _fragile_ they are. They grow SUPER quick, but DO NOT recover from damage. Which sucks, because it seems like everything where I live likes to eat them. XD

The doctor to me always embodies the quote: “You can't truly call yourself peaceful unless you're capable of great violence. If you're not capable of violence, you're not peaceful, you're harmless. Important difference.”
Every previous doctor had respect in the universe because everyone knew if he wanted to, he could undo worlds without a weapon. He only showed this side when his hand was forced, but the wrath of a good man was there.
Ncuti does not embody this in the slightest. He hardly has enough survival instinct to avoid getting dusted to death, he cries when things get tough, and his victory here feels undeserved. I don’t wish to insult Ncuti here, but his portrayal of the doctor feels…pathetic.

    • @chrimsonphantom

You also have the devil's run quote.
So far in this season he used plot device gloves to bring a ship down to kill the goblin king.
Everyone had to talk the Nanny out of killing the monster.
Boom he needed to be saved by the A.I of a dead man.
73 yards he wasn't in it.
Bubble they were sidelined and left the prominent threat alone.
Rouge: Rouge had to sacrifice himself to save RUby.
Then now ruby had to leash a Sutekh and to hope that he would bring everyone back.

43:30 I have long suspected the same, especially after I saw that photo of them with RTD holding him in his arms. What I find unacceptable is how old men are criticized for treating your actresses like this when they give them the roles. Meanwhile, here is an old, well known director who is gay, very publicly showing interest to a younger actor he gave a role in his show. There are no standards, or rather they are applied on top of the caste Hollywood has.

Issues with Sutekh clinging onto the TARDIS and corrupting it:
    1. The exterior has been shrunk a few times before; did that also happen to him?
    2. When the TARDIS was transferred into a human body, why didn't she tell the Doctor about Sutekh?
    3. Journey's End had the TARDIS dunked into an energy core and almost destroyed; what was Sutekh's plan to escape?
    4. The Pandorica Opens and The Big Bang had the TARDIS blow up at every point in space and time, so what was Sutekh doing?
    5. The Magician's Apprentice and The Witch's Familiar had the TARDIS atomically disperse its exterior, so what was Sutekh holding onto during that time?
    6. During the Time War, the Time Lords would've wanted to ensure the Daleks didn't sneak anything in, so it's likely they would've run extensive scans on anything that traversed the battlefield or entered Gallifrey; because of this, the Time Lords would've _absolutely_ detected Sutekh, so why didn't they?
    7. If Sutekh had been placing Susans everywhere the TARDIS landed, then why hasn't she been seen before Series 14?

I'm so glad they had all this supernatural build up to the fact that Ruby was an ordinary girl, and her mom is just an ordinary nurse that almost killed her daughter.
I mean could you imagine if she was the tricksters daughter. The daughter of "the god of traps", who manipulates people into making a different choices that results in a alternate timeline where it could feed off of the resulting chaos. Who just so happens to be mad at Sutekh for killing all life in the universe. Because there is no more chaos just complete never ending order. So the trickster would have beef with the god of death and orchestrated an event that could prevent Sutekh's rise to power.

Two things I thought of that would’ve made this episode a bit more interesting:
    - Rose should’ve become one of Sutekh’s servants
    - In the S4 finale Journey’s End, when she is saying goodbye to the Doctor, Sarah Jane told the Doctor that “you’ve got the biggest family in the universe”; this episode says Sutekh latched onto the TARDIS since Pyramid of Mars so he probably would’ve been around to hear that, so…when the Doctor asks Sutekh why he hadn’t killed him, Sutekh should’ve responded thusly:
*“That would be too easy; I want to keep you alive so you can know how it feels to be so alone, flying through time like I was; you have the biggest family in the universe, right? I want you to live so that you can feel that family vanish”* or something like that, definitely would be a bit more professionally written than that XD

Another way to improve this episode or finale. Is to just not tie it into Ruby's backstory. The idea that the doctor had an enemy that has been watching him for thousands of years, waiting to strike. Would be a great idea for an episode on its own. Have Sutekh be on par with the doctor in terms of strategy. Have Sutekh know the doctor so well that he could predict his actions.

They retconned the hell out of Sutekh as well as how the Doctor beat him last time. Suketh was on Mars and whilst he was travelling from Mars to Earth Tom Baker's Doctor trapped it in his transportation tunnel thing, by making it so that Sutekh spent so long travelling between the planets that he would die of old age, no use of the time vortex at all.

The Sonic screwdriver is such an OP item it is stupidly underutilized in this Dr. Who.
The Sonic Screwdriver can do so many things even messing up with people like hastening their aging, one of the antagonists used the Sonic Screwdriver on Dr. Who to jump him so many years forward that his body morphed into some weird living mummified monkey. Iirc I think the Doctor used the Sonic Screwdriver to tend a wound one time but I may be thinking of something else.
Sutehk sounds like a cartoon villain, poor choice in VA.

...The mystery mom should have been Ruby herself.
This just came to me from the quote about Susan not knowing if she's some sleeper agent like a Phoenix from the pre-finale episode. One thing to note with this idea, Ruby's adopted mom should be in this final living group.
So basically in this episode, the doctor and Ruby try to find some Magic Life Embodying McGuffin, they are chased by Sutekh's minions, they escape, they find the needed McGuffin, they break it, and the only way to fix it is for someone to sacrifice their life, the Blonde Older Woman (I don't remember her name) gets turned to Sutekh's agent when one of the minions touched her while they were running away, and rather than kill her, made her a sleeper agent. Anyways, the adoption mom is left, she sacrifices her life, Ruby get the power of the life thing, kills Sutekh and realizes she created herself and places her baby her at the church, crying because she knows with this act she ensured her mother's death, but needed to do this to save the universe. She is now a god representing every life birthed or something.
There. I ripped off the Bad Wolf Plot and at the very least it has some more cohesion than "Mystery mom was just a normal person all along~!" BS.

An eternity of solitude with nothing but your own failure; with the knowledge that you are the cause of the death of the universe. One of my favorite shows has a villain say "There will be peace in the dark" to try to tempt the heroes to allow him to control all life and eliminate conflict and struggle. I think even something simple like that, but with death would be pretty interesting for Doctor Who. The villain could offer death as a form of peace from the struggle of existing throughout time with little purpose and The Doctor could ponder a bit before giving a cool speech and getting the upper hand.

instead we got this guy, claiming to be the doctor, just standing on the mine crying the entire episode while everyone else had conversations with each other, and the ambulances just kept saying thoughts and prayers while moffat sat, smugly chuckling about how big and profound an anti religious message it all is.

I heard somewhere that Russel T Davies wanted a Doctor more relatable to young people/gen Z, who are "more open with their emotions", but I feel like that doesn't work the way he wanted. The Doctor comes off as too weak, and certainly passive. Being emotionally open doesn't mean crying or breaking over every single bad thing that happens to you. He still has to carry authority and be ready to act when survival kicks in. Like, you'd think the Doctor is so well-travelled and used to what happens around him that it still takes him quite a push to emotionally crack. That he wouldn't let out his upset unless the situation had a lot of gravity and was dire. He could even convey emotional vulnerability without crying if needed-through his voice, facial expressions or decision-making. Have him do something rash in desperation, realise his mistake and fix it by the end of the episode. Being emotionally open about your vulnerabilities doesn't mean crying over everything. In fact, in high-stakes situations, our brains can shove our feelings to the side as a survival mechanism. That's what he'd been doing for centuries. You think if he was emotionally open, it'd make more sense for someone so used to crises to crack afterwards, when it's over and everyone's safe. To show his emotional flaws to his companion and cry in private, in a slowed down scene where they're talking in the TARDIS or the aftermath of the action. Save the feelings for important moments or when action has deescalated. Or, since he's a milennia-old alien, have him express his upset in ways or around things that are alien, so even though he's upset we can't entirely fathom it as humans. You have to use crying for deliberate reasons and relatively sparingly for it to have impact and make the upset important, otherwise you trivialise it and make it look like the character can't handle any pressure
People cry for a reason-so have a specific emotional arc to centre his reactions around and keep in mind what triggers it. Is it pain over grief or loss? Guilt over not being able to save people? Having his authority challenged? Being alone? Have there be specific situations that trigger this for a reason, not just have him cry willy-nilly.
And there's an innate problem with trying to make the Doctor more emotionally relatable-he's a Time Lord, a several thousand-year-old alien. He's not going to be emotionally similar to human young people by nature. This is why, in previous iterations, the companions served as the emotional relatability to the audience. If you want to make the Doctor more emotionally open, you have to come at it from an alien perspective and think "Why/what would the Doctor cry about?". I think Ten's emotional upset in episodes like Midnight, or when he's seeing Donna from inside the cafe in The End of Time are more convincing, human and relatable than Fifteen's emotions coming out of nowhere at everything.

Also it's been hinted once or twice that the doctor just seems to 'know' things about historical events without ever needing to learn about them, due to them being 'fixed' or something...

59:48 the suns have all died, yet where is the light in UNIT coming from?! If no one is there to operate power stations and grids, where...where is that light coming from?! HAHAHA I'll shush now. This...just. This episode more than the others even, can't keep anything together longer than 73 seconds. HAHAHA
