Late Winter Snowplow Surprise

  • Here is a good example of why the roads are closed in the spring of the year.
    After a snowfall everything looks beautiful on the surface, but danger lurks below that blanket of nice fresh snow as warmer temperatures have thawed out roadbeds. Here my plow dug in and tore up some asphalt when I hit a soft spot on this rough section of road. Fortunately I wasn't driving fast so nothing on the truck was hurt. If this happened at a higher speed I could have rode up on my plow and done a lot of damage.

    Well that certainly could have been a lot worse! I was watching the plow truck today wondering if something like this ever happens...and then your video pops up in my recommended and answered that question. Great video! Glad you didn't get hurt or break your truck.

      If I was going faster the plow could have ended upside down underneath the truck. It's called riding up on the plow. It's happened around here a few times in the past.

    Spring time snow plowing . I had this happen ‘1’ time , we were plowing a light snow & slush off the road , there was about 3” of slush ice on the road , in an area that crossed a swampy area about 5’ down off each side the plow dug in & started that side skate motion at 20mph . I was quick on the leaver because I was expecting that it might happen! Even though That driver , (my Forman, )
    claimed the plow as his , he immediately thanked me.
    At the first snow of the winter ( while in the shop, on the level concrete) we set the plow on 1/2” plywood & the slide shoes on the floor, so the plow would not dig in , but i don’t remember ever doing it in the spring

    That's why it's nice to have belly scrapers under the truck. I've driven big trucks plows for 25 years, an with that type of road u wouldn't need the front Plow. U also can apply the pressure u need for the belly Plow an Go a lot faster to to push it farther off road 👍

    wow that brings back a memory , About eight years ago I was plowing a dead end road . Close to the end of the road was a bridge for a drainage ditch that was built in 1938 , plowed one way turned around started to go back and ripped the concrete bridge deck off crumbled into dust . but i did not know i did it till a cop went down and stabbed the radiator with a hunk of rebar . road was closed still closed today

    Well, the ice gets into small cracks in the asphalt, goes through many freeze-thaw-re-freeze cycles; enlarging the cracks; heaving up asphalt chunks, where your blade catches it, and tears a BIG hole. So, it's up to the Summer crews to FIND those cracks, inject 'em to the brim with Sealant, then steam roll the dickens out of 'em! You may not always be to blame, for these "boo-boos", my friend.

    Wow!! You were one lucky man not to do any major damage to your plow truck, other than tweaking the angle of the blade a teensy weensy bit. That old wet snow really didn't help your day either. Glad that it wasn't worse. Hope you are ready for the next blow coming. Keep safe and try not to tear up your truck on those naughty roads. Thank you for showing us why we need the roads closed in early spring. :)

      Hurt my arm a bit from the impact. The good thing about getting a big dump of snow now is that it won't last long! Where are you located?

    • @slickmongercash7788
      @slickmongercash7788 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Near Fredericton. We got hit pretty good with the storm but it was so mild that a lot melted by morning. Then another 15cm fell on it. Probably 25cm down out there id say. Real wet too. Can see shocks lift after clearing off vehicles.

      Yes! It slows the engine down quicker when shifting gears, which is a help when you are pushing snow.

      You obviously have never plowed snow in rural America with dirt roads you have to keep your rpms up so you can keep your momentum! This snow was really wet and takes a extreme amount of power to plow plus you gave unthawed ground beneath taking power!

    We use thick rubber blades to prevent this and if you hit a raised manhole with a steel blade God help you. You might end up going to the vet when you eat the windshield if your not wearing your seat belt.

    • @JimHowDigsDirt
      @JimHowDigsDirt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some guys I work with will use rubber with a soft steel blade on their wing. Most of us use carbide edge sandwiched between two soft blades, like we do on the plow. Luckily we don't have too many manholes to deal with in the county.
