FIRST ATTEMPT AT MAITAKE MUSHROOM CULTIVATION, Indoor and Outdoor Fruiting Experiment

  • This is my first attempt at cultivating Maitake mushroom (Grifola frondosa), so I figured I would try to fruit a couple blocks outdoors, and a couple inside. The strain I'm currently growing is the "Dancing Hens" commercial strain from Mycelium Emporium. Maitake are considered a "moderate" difficulty mushroom in terms of cultivation, and good yields and normal fruit body formation can be tricky. This video mainly covers my strategy to get two of the blocks to give me a natural outdoor fall fruiting by shallowly burying them in an open spot in my vegetable garden.
    UPDATE 2023: These never produced any mushrooms in the garden for me, but they fruited beautifully indoors in my humidity chamber. You can see that video here:

    I'm first again :)
    I guess I am the only one that comments & likes because I like the info here + I want you to get noticed by the youtube algorithm.
    I have had zero luck indoors with Maitake & will try your methods

      Thanks for jumping on it 😁 The algorithm is real... I've found it interesting how TH-cam (and other platforms) throttle you up and down in order to tone you down, and lure you back in. As always, thx for watching 👍

    You're really tackling some difficult mushrooms; cordy, morels, and now maitakes. I wish you the best of luck/skill. Thanks for sharing.
    PS I enjoy your videos.

    Was it metal window screen or the soft material window screen that you wrap your outdoor blocks in?

    • @RenegadeMushrooms
      @RenegadeMushrooms  ปีที่แล้ว

      The softer screen, use either fiberglass or poly screen

    I just spawned a bunch of maitake last week too!! Man, I wish we were closer!

      Good luck on your grow, I'm not very optimistic I will get quality indoor fruits my first try, but I'll do my best.

      @@RenegadeMushrooms Mine was old spawn added on old pure sawdust blocks 😂 heat sealer ripped my last 10lb unicorn bag so I had to bag them up in ziplock freezer gallons, lil 3M tape for air flow ☠️
      If I’m kinda confident in mine, you should be on cloud9!

      Gotta watch to the end where I explain it...😁 actually it's nothing more than my basic HWFP recipe:
      2 lbs. dry HWFP
      2 lbs. 13 oz. water
      1 lb. wheat spawn
      THAT'S IT! Thx for watching 👍

      @@RenegadeMushrooms I love your TH-cam channel. When you buried the block, are there any big trees around? Do you think the root of nearby big trees can suck on nutrients out of the block?

    • @RenegadeMushrooms
      @RenegadeMushrooms  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@phile2323 Tree roots aren't a threat to your blocks, but insects and animals definitely are, so it's important to keep an eye on them and protect them with fencing, screening, etc. as necessary. Glad you are enjoying the videos, thanks for watching 👍

    Yeah screen is nice idea. I have some golden oyster mycelium sitting under a rock walk. That seems to be doing really well with no bugs infestations yet.
    I am finding that wine cap is definitely the way to go for garden beds and fun to check on its progress.

      @@RenegadeMushrooms no fruits yet, first year trying. I already removed blue oysters settup due to bugs. Which was worth it with how well it removed the bug infestation around the garden. (Also hand watered plants around to cut back as well) I added some manure to bio diversify patch and checked.. It seemed like the mycelium left behind was propagating we shall see.

      I've got fermented wood chips that will finally be ready tomorrow that I can mix in with manure compost to help the damage left behind.
