  • Wild like Qor? Ukraine watercolor now easy to get in the USA. Full pan 21 color set, professional quality paint. Art supply review, demo painting, color chart swatch. ↓ SHOW MORE for supplies and other info! ↓
    These paints were beautiful, highly pigmented, vibrant, clean colors with 18 of the colors being reliable in regards to how they flow/disperse. They are mostly staining colors, not good for lifting techniques. If you prefer pastel, muted tones, this set would last a very long time watered down. I found them to make easy transitions and beautiful washes wet on wet. I also used them for layering, as shown in my demo painting, as each new layer did not effect the layers below. I know this was a while ago but i just found this brand a few months ago and I really like this paint. i bought quite a few open stock and they have a beautiful magenta rose pr 122 (just as nice as DS Quint Lilac which is my fav but much cheaper) as well as a transparent yellow named aureleon py150. I like their plastic palette much better than their standard tin palettes.

    Lovely art. Lovely review. Thanks for sharing. My preference for dispersion, or lack of, depends upon what I'm painting. When you did the dispersion test on the violet, black, and blue, I imagined how the blue and black would make a great effect for creating fish tails or fins.

    QOR sacres me out…it's good for flowy abstract style…not friendly with traditional blending and brushwork controling technique. I love paint with moderate flow or to one extreme that it don't have any speeding agent in it like Holbein. You can always add oxgall but not the other way around.

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I find it really tricky to work with Rosa or Qor, it's definitely easier to work with Holbein. I have had a Qor set for a while now, but have a hard time finding a use for them compared to my other paints.

    Ohhhh, I've been wanting to see more reviews on these paints since I saw them almost a year ago on a colouring book channel but no one seems to have it. I even subed to Rosa's YT channel in hopes that they will announce something for the international market. The hexagon shaped paints are just so cute. And you're right, I didn't expect to see that much of a difference in the flow between paints!! These sort of remind me of the Renesan Paints that recently came out of Poland that I also wanted to try but can't seem to find someone to send them to New Zealand.
    I loveeee these videos. How do you manage to source your difficult to get palettes?

      I got lucky! These happened to pop up on Amazon USA last week and I jumped at the chance to try a watercolor brand I hadn't seen before. I check Amazon every week for random new watercolor stuff (no one has forced me to admit I have an art supply addiction yet lol). I haven't tried Renesan but I saw them on Etsy recently and was tempted by their reasonable prices. Speaking of, there is a brand from Poland I REALLY want to get though that I can't figure out how to order to the USA - have you seen Irit's video on Roman Szmal Aquarius watercolors? Some of the colors were Daniel Smith lookalikes in granulation and color separation. Now if only I could open a portal to grab some of those :) th-cam.com/video/fWM4jU21E2c/w-d-xo.html

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Unfortunately nothing is shipping from Ukraine, so all the art supply stores that artists promote are quickly running out of stock - potentially indefinitely. This means that the art store may benefit, but not the Rosa Gallery factory yet. It's very sad. In addition to that, if this crisis does resolve, there will be a very long time before we can support through purchases as the shipping companies will be backed up once they resume operations (currently UPS and FedEx are not running in Russia or Ukraine).

    I loooove flow! Its such fun to watch and its challenges are fun too. That said, I have to have both. Sometimes I want it to stay right where I put it. it really depends on what I'm painting. I've never tried QOR though. Most of my paints are Sennelier or MG. I add synthetic ox gall if something isn't flowing enough. Thanks... very well done, informative, video.

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know what you mean, it is so fun to watch it flow and Qor can't be beat in that department. Most of the time staying in place is better for my art style, but when I do a swatch card I get so amused by wildly flowing paint. One of these days I'm going to have to try to approach a subject matter that will allow me the freedom to play around with the flow more. I haven't been patient enough for the challenges of managing unruly paint just yet lol :)

    I bought a set of 28 and when I did a color chart I thought ...almost the same as White Nights, But no, they are not the same. They do not mix so good and they are too vibrant for me. I know you may add more water ...but this dosen't work as one can expect. Also too opaque. They are not bad. I could say quite good, but not as good as to use them again and again. That means that from time to time I will paint with them and won't be dissapointed.

    Another beautiful review! I absolutely love the whoosh factor of some of those colors. It’s what got me addicted to watercolors in the first place. The Aquazol (probably spelled incorrectly) that QOR uses in their watercolors creates such magical effects! Right now I am hooked on the handmade paints by different makers but I still love to play with my QOR and M. Graham paints.

      A bit in caput mortum, but mostly just some very minor granulation in the normally granulating pigments like ultramarine pb29, cobalt teal pb28 and chromium oxide pg17. Overall this brand is not a go-to for texture effects, they really grind/mill them to a fine particle size.

    Thank you for your review, although I am from Ukraine, but only recently started using Rosa. It seems to me that this watercolor is for water technology. Even when it dries, it is somehow different. I compare with Van Gogh and White Nights. In addition to the set, I also bought tubes # 741 (wonderful turquoise, it looks pastel, but when dried it's just wonderful, and uniquely combines with other colors. And # 734 coral. Also very spreading. It seems it's just synthetic pigments in the composition, because such effects are I also think you need to buy English red, which is not enough in the set.

      While beautiful paints, there are definitely some issues with inconsistency of flow/color choices, so I can understand deciding to pass on this set (especially if you already own a lot of watercolors). Yes, 0.20 size isograph pen. This drawing was done a long time ago so I don't have video footage for it, I had just never got around to coloring it. Tiny drawing though, perhaps the zoomed in image on the trading card size makes it look like the lines are more bold.

      Rosa Gallery has such lovely paints, I hope you'll love them as much as I do. If you end up collecting more from them, their magenta is the most beautiful version of PR122 that I have tried between dozens of top manufacturers. I was very disappointed with Renesans though because several of the colors i got were too shiny with binder. I also wasn't happy with their confusing product catalog and differences between swatches and what you actually receive. If you're interested, I collected my thoughts about Renesans here - www.kimcrick.com/pages/renesans-watercolor-review-intense-tubes-and-extra-fine-pan-professional-paints

      @@KimberlyCrick well I’m glad I ordered the Rosa gallery set, I honestly got them because it seemed similar to qor’s at least in wet-on-wet washes.
      And wow it seems like the renesans’ line has quite a few problems. So I have already ordered a large amt of tubes from the company and it was expensive but more affordable than other artist grade watercolors. If there is such a difference between the tubes and pans, maybe the formulation might work better in the tube form? I guess I will wait to reserve judgement until they arrive and if there are any big problems, I might contact the seller.

    It's important to know the different types of paints and what each will do. Some will be predictable while others not so.
    After that, as a creator, one has to utilize the various characteristics of each where they can best contribute. Aces in their places.
    Botanical painting probably isn't the best forum for paints that like to party hardy on the paper. Loose painting would be the better choice for this quality. Maybe a botanical rendering background of a wet-on-wet unpredictable color push might create something interesting and unique.
    Ultimately, this is why swatching is a good habit to have.

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, the Bee paper can be good or bad depending on your style. For me I love it for glazing because when a color is staining it really sticks and I can go over it with a new layer with no fear of disturbing the last one. However, if a color is easily lifting, like English Red or Potter's Pink, it will still easily lift from Bee paper. I recently tried a paper from Mairtini and their sizing was made for easy lifting. it was great for fixing mistakes or adding highlights with a damp brush, but it nearly crippled my normal work flow for layering lol :)

      @@Charlotte-sq8cq I just figured out what you probably saw regarding Rosa and PV3! It's in their student grade set ("Rosa Studio" student has PV3, not "Rosa Gallery" pro that uses PV23 instead).

      @@KimberlyCrick Yes, you are right. I checked now. I can't understand why I did not see it.

      @@KimberlyCrick Rosa uses PV3 as a component in the Lavender paint, and yes, it fades there quite noticably (I did my own testing). Their PV23 Violet is quite stable.
      I honestly did not expected much from them, but most of the paints are quite good and lightfast, even opera pink had litte change in color.
      The whole range is 80 colors now, with several "as-if-Schmincke-granulating" colors.
      Not actually Schmincke, also not DS, but local to me and the price is good. I use a lot of them, and have specific love for Violet (best intencity and value/money), Ultramarine (best price here), Carmine (same), Cobalt Turquoise, Indigo, Grape Black and Black Green.
      They also produce A LOT of brushes, including my all-time favourite travel sable/synthetic mix (which now unfortunately is expensive as hell, to the "Escoda-expensive" point)
