I have a convict family History along with Irish, part of the family, the other part were England and other places. At times there was an invisbleness that it felt like living with world war 3 when I was a child. My family, along with other things, cut themselves off from the past, and didn't know nor want to know their history. They also didn't finish their education and left school before time and worked. They were not for fighting and were for peace. There were just things I was told not to talk about with anyone in our nation. When my parents died, and later on, when I had huge health challenges, I went on a journey to find out my family. I ended up finding them. My ancestors made sure their descendents could find them. Even talked to some of them. It was a very painful and devastating journey, but it was also an accepting one, and glad that I found out. I also learn what I have been gifted with from my ancestors, because they were history and they were very gifted, talented and all sorts of things. What would I say about our part of the family and our nation and our history, We are not ashamed of it, Courageous, daring, larrikin, can also takes things seriously, but also caring and all sorts of things....but the best one of all, is my/our gift of Peace, I am also very accepting.

Thank you so much, the plight of Irish female convicts is not discussed enough. I think there is truth in the “shame” of being descended from convicts. One side of my family openly talked about our history, but my fathers side didn’t openly discuss it at all.

I feel that it should be something to be proud of, the majority of these people were sent simply for being poor. A loaf of bread or a spoon could get you sent there and there was no social welfare or much help like we have nowadays, thank you so very much for watching and commenting.

It was an even bigger shame to have it marked on your child's birth certificate or have it stamped "illegitimate". I think much of the shame and hidden history of Australians /females/convicts early days was sanitized in favor of the British.. Much real history and truth only stated to come out around 2000 when Australia grew up a bit an managed to throw off much of the British yoke. Nowadays more and more are discovering their ancestry and DNA through modern technology and specific sites.I think as well much of the disgrace of the British empire treatment of/to their convicts and much of the truth about the real stories are coming out so many Australians can finally recover their pride. So much sadness harshness and sorrow in the settling of Australia and with convicts, unwanted English orphans, Irish Orphan girls, stolen Aboriginal children, hard lives of new immigrants, etc etc . Now that Australia is a wealthy nation the British are desperate to keep hold of Australia as the best of friends.

Rachel, my friend, another superb video! Just wanted to let you know on the community post re content about counties, the comments are turned off (you asked for suggestions) It seems about 80% of the people I follow on YT are saying their 'views' are way-off & down, it has something to do w/algorithms, not your excellent content! Warm hugs from Colorado, USA....Kaz

Awfully strong men and women who came over to Australia via the penal system.
There's a mini series called, Against the Wind, with Jon English and Mary Larkin, you might enjoy it if you haven't already seen it🙏🏽
Would really enjoy hearing your vocals behind all of these stories. Important history with facts that make the connection of migration, personal. They referred to the convict ships as "coffin ships" and quite often loved ones survived the boat trip, in order make it through 7 years of hard labour.
... I discovered recently, the 4000 females that came here, referred to as the "famine orphan girls." 1700 of the allegedly sent to Melbourne, Australia. Thanks for the Inspiration and extra unknown information🙏🏽

Excellent Video. I recently came across, when looking at some family records that my my mothers grandmother was the child of two Irish convicts that were transported to VDL for larceny (theft). She ended up in the Goldfields of Victoria married a Danish miner. They chased the Gold to Kalgoorlie Western Australia when the easier pickings of Victoria tailed off and I believe they were quiet well off.
If there were convicts in the family it was not discussed until recently, where it now seen as "cool".
The plight of the Irish women who came to Australia during/from the Irish famine, married and tried to have children is quiet disturbing. Because of malnutrition many didn't fully develop and if their pelvis was unduly affected there was big problems at childbirth.

Wow, that really is an excellent story about your family, I really enjoyed making the two video's about Australia, I have a small following from down under and to show my appreciation I made them for you all. My family were on different sides in the Irish war of independence and there is a bitterness on my Paternal side of the family, but they all live in the U.K and |I am here with my Kin , the rebels lol, It sure does be interesting finding out these things about our own personal past's, I am so happy to have heard yours, thank you so very much for watching.

Hi Rachel I love your videos I’m in Navan so not far from you can I ask as a fellow Irishwoman telling these wonderful tales of our history do you not use your own or even another Irish persons voice why is it in a robot English accent voice??

I have a serious medical condition where I have almost lost my voice, it is down to a whisper so I have no choice but to use text to speach, and I couldn't find an Irish accent so use this one.
