In this video, we go for our second build from the game hollow knight. This time, the hornet's needle.
Forged from a single piece of 5160 spring steel and heat treated to form a fully functional, battle ready blade. It is 64" long and weighs about 10 lbs....it is quite simply a monster of a sword.
Techniques explored in this build include forge welding, power hammer work, fullers, lots of angle grinder work and of course heat treating, including annealing, hardening and tempering. Check us out on Instagram for more pictures at / thakironworks .

Realistically Hornet’s needle is pretty big. It’s about as long as she is tall. Now that I see it scaled up I’d have to say Hornet is quite the strong independent woman (bug)
To be fair, most bugs are quite strong for their size. But yes, this sword is monstrous.

Thijmen The Turkey have you fought hornet sentinel? She moves really fuckin fast. Only bosses i can think of are faster are the two grims, soul tyrant and pure vessel

You sit at home resting from a hard days worth of gaming, you slaughtered every boss on radiant and feel accomplished but then you hear something outside your window call out “SHAW!” And you know what you must do.
You call the police and say that some wierdo dressed as a game character is challenging you to a duel
Now I can't unsee this hahaha, some guy in a tacky homemade cape and a cardboard hornet mask stumbling around trying to wield the needle.

Hornet’s nail legit looks like a great sword without a cross guard, seriously cool to actually see it in real life like this. And to think she jabs and swings it about, sending it flying as if it were an arrow, with just one hand. Silksong cannot come soon enough. This was glorious to watch. 😭
Freakin' awesome sword. Hollow Knight is easily my favorite game to come out of 2017. Love seeing works of art like this come out of it.

I don't know why but the part where you twist the medal to get this spiral shape really kills me. It looks like: IT'S GONNA BREAK but then I remember that it is iron and probably lots of strengh involved. Once the "wow" effect is gone I notice all the little details like pouring water over it (so to "fix" this section of the spiral?) and I realise that smithing requires raw power and gentle hands. This channel is really really cool!

We decided we weren't going to put anything through the eye of the needle. I also imagine a big silk rope being quite expensive haha.

So wait, smithing question: Im an absolute super-novice at this, but why didn't you temper all the way up to the handle section? Did the twisting of the steel afford some extra harness to that section? If not, wouldn't the section where the shaft meets the blade bend and distort if this blade were used to strike at something ? Or was the tempering in this build purely for the sake of completing the process, since... this kina is a bit of a monster blade to be used for sparring of any kind.
You are right, this blade is a monster. We will actually be doing a video where Robb explains the process of building the Needle in depth. We will actually feature this question in our video so stay tuned, should be out Friday of next week!

We most likely will be doing that one but it will be from scratch as you simply can't "upgrade" swords like that in real life :D

Broo great vids, but you need to work on filming it a little better, add in bits where you have a voice over explaining some bits or write on the bottom, and finally explain why you're making it and try using it to cut a melon or something like the man at arms videos, that's one of the best parts. Good luck and thanks for making this! Love the games!
We have a follow up video that goes through the whole process, I suggest you check it out haha. As for smashing melons and stuff we are trying to avoid "crossing the line" with TH-cam as best as we can so any portrayal of violence is out of the question for now... even melons.

Yes I am very aware of this. Unfortunately Hornet's theme didn't fit the overall feel of the video so I decided not to use it (really wanted to make it work though)
